So today in Fairfax County we had three inches of snow, but were kept in school, an amount (though it's not large) usually gets us out. My friend Dave called the superintendent, and his wife called back with this rather angry message.

No kidding, that's horsecrap. I didn't get one single snow day the entire time I was in the yukon. -40? Too bad, you're going to school. A foot of snow? No problem, get your butt to school.

rofl, that's hilarious.
I remember my High School would never close, no matter how bad it was. As a result I was in a car accident. My superintendent apologized to our entire school though for his poor decision.

We would definitely get out with 3 inches, they don't really play around much with that.

LOL, she thinks it is bad that her husband went into work at 6:30 that is sad,
but I bet she will feel horrible if he husband gets fired for her replying to a
work related phone call and treating a student like that. Also, we to got
about 4 inches of snow here, I thought we should of had a snow day
because of the driving conditions, because even after I got out of school and
got home I was still have trouble getting my truck to grip the road.

Where I grew up, we had school canceled once because it might snow.
I know a lot of you guys think that kind of thing is ridiculous, but you have to look at it regionally. Most towns in areas like that are spread out, and most of the time do not have access to their own plows/salt spreaders to make the roads safe for people.
The one year we had a big ice storm(for us), we didn't have nearly the right infrastructure to deal with it, and the city ended up filling the dump trucks up with sand(because we didn't have salt stored for the amount of roads needed) and put guys in the backs of them with shovels.
On the other hand, how many of you snowbirds have had to go to school during monsoon worthy hurricanes, because the power hadn't been ripped out yet?

That was my first thought. When I was in high school, 3 inches of school wouldn't even be enough to make us check the news to see if there was a delay/cancellation.

In my area, 3 inches of snow might cancel school if it sticks to the road or the roads are icy. There are a few reasons why. 1: We aren't used to driving in snow 2:we don't have snow tires so we have less traction.

Since i live in an area with a lot of hills and valleys 3 inches would get us a two hour delay.

My superintendent use to never cancel school until one day a elementary
school had to stand outside in snow during a fire drill and i think the parents
weren't to happy. But now i would say we have a good amount

We get off if snow starts at 9pm and is expected to continue throughout the night. But thats private school for you. They can't afford to leave things 'til morning or have early dismals because the bus companies get pissy.

Fairfax and DC are weird locations. Over 60% of the people who live there aren't from the area. Not even from the state originally. That means that you've got a bunch of yahoos that don't know how to drive properly in the snow or rain. Not to mention the fact that VA in general has suckalicious snow-removal. NoVA gets hit with a good storm at least once every year and yet they still underfund the snow removal guys.
I know a lot of schools got out an hour or two early Pred. Where in Fairfax Co. are you?
I'm in S. Fairfax, just North of Ft. Belvoir in the Alexandria district of the county (not Alexandria City). ShortyBP is over in Falls Church.

How dare you call them at home. Don't you know he had to do the responsibilities he agreed to when he first got the job?

Yeah, up around me (including today) a few inches and our superintendent will either call a 2 hour delay, or close completely because there's a lot of hills around us and the roads can get bad easy.

It seems like all you warm-region folks are under the impression that we have an abundance of plows up here in the north. Where I live, it might take 2 days after a storm for anything other than the interstate to be plowed. Sometimes you just have to man up and drive in the snow.
Several times a year I have to get to work (used to be the same for school) by driving through a foot of snow.
The only thing that really sucks is not being able to see the road, and certain hills you barely make it up, then go too fast down because you can't hit your brakes without spinning out.

Somewhat.
I do consider it a little rude to call the home, but seeing as I have no more information on the scenario I can not say either way.
