So I receantly purchased a Springfield Armory M1 Garand and for some reason there is a serial number on the bolt. Can anyone explain what this means? My friend says it's indicitive of a re-issue, but he's not 100% on that. The rifle looks to be in great condition, the wood and the park finish both look amazing, but the finish on the bolt looks worn. The firing pin, extractor, and ejector pin all look fine though so I'm thinking it's safe to shoot, I'd just like to double check.

Could I ask how much you payed? A lot of weapons have serial numbers on numerous parts. If all numbers match up you have a "matched weapon". I'm sure someone else has more knowledge than me. I only have a K98.

It was $900, a little expensive but everything functions just fine and the finish on the wood and metal are in match condition. The barrel is amazing for something that saw action, the rifling is still there and still deep.

You made me get up and get my M1 to check.

As impulse stated, if it's a matching number to your receiver, then it's original. If it doesn't match (mine doesn't, although it's also SA) then it's been worked on at some point.

Any idea how old your rifle is? You can check http://www.jouster.com/serial/Springfield.html - here

Mine's a 1955. Got it in pretty decent shape... traded a really beat up IBM M1 Carbine for it.

Enjoy that gun, they're a blast to shoot. I'm left handed though. So I flinch near the end of each mag because when it ejects it always pops me in my face

My buddy has had one for a while and I overused it, he was thinking about selling it to me, so I bought my own. It was made in April of 1943 shorty and no the numbers don't match. The one on the bolt looks etched in so I'm thinking it's the number from the gun that the bolt was taken off of. The number matches that of a garand made in july of the same year. As far as enjoying it goes you can count on that, and I've never had the en bloc clip hit me altough I'm sure it'll happen sooner or later. One thing I'll never do is slam my thumb in the receiver.

I'm hoping I don't get Garand Thumb either.

Right now I cheat and use two hands to reload. When I brought the rifle to show my uncle, who is all of 5'2" and hasn't handled a Garand in almost 50yrs was still able to do it without hesitation. Me... I'm still a wimp.

If you're eligible... best place to get ammo is through CMP. You probably already know not to use commercial 30-06 with it due to the pressure curve.
I'm hoping to get set up to reload soon... although the HXP that CMP is selling can be had for less than the reloading components.

I picked one up a few months back for $500. Its a shooter more than anything even remotely collectible. The guy I had look at it told me that it was a collection of parts basically.

Its a great rifle, but I need a new operating rod. It's got a pretty serious bend to it.

Hey reb, since its beat up there is no harm done re-blueing it and re-finishing the wood. Where as doing that to a nice M1 will hurt the value.

We used to have one laying around, I think we sold it though. I know people sell op rods on Ebay. Check there.

I actually never thought to check ebay.

There's nothing wrong with mine, its in good shape, but since its a collection of pieces that were actually imported to the US, there's nothing in the way of collectible value.

I just need something to replace the one I've got. I also have to look into CMP ammo. All I've got is commercial stuff, 180 grain.

One of the neatest tricks I learned was how to load only two rounds into an 8 round clip.

The bolt on a original Garand does not have serial numbers.  It's an after market bolt.  Possibly Danish, Greek or Australian.   Check your barrel and see who made it.  If it says Blue Sky VA, it probably came from the Civilian Marksmanship Program here in the States.  Does your stock have the cartouche?  The serial number for the reciever won't have any matches anywhere else on the rifle.  There ar no serial numbers on any of the major components (Op rod, trigger assembly, front sight assembly).  You can find out more by contacting Tony Pucci at Orion 7 enterprises here in Long Island NY.  www.m1garand.com

Post a pic of your op-rod, they're supposed to be bent and are not supposed to contact the barrel during the firing cycle(or as little as possible). My Garand is a 1945 mix-master with a winchester bolt and a 1965 SA barrel. It was in essentially new re-arsenaled condition when I bought it. It's a hell of an accurate rifle for an unmodified Garand(around 1 MOA with commercial ammo 2 with mg ball) gas cylinder lockup is tight, original milled trigger guard locks down tight, bore is like a mirror and I broke it in properly so it's very easy to clean compared to some of the used firearms I've had.

I wouldn't worry too much about the non-matching bolt, I'm not sure if they were even serial numbered to the rifle, so if it was made within a few months of your receiver it could very well be original. Check the barrel date, I doubt it's original since corrosive primers, a lot of firing, and cleaning from the muzzle sans bore guide wore them out fast. To check muzzle wear, do the bullet test. Take a ball round and place it in the muzzle. It shouldn't go in past the taper of the bullet if it's good and tight. Stick to ammunition with bullets in the 150gr weight range with proper burn characteristics. Surpluse ammo is always a good bet, but look out for some of the older Korean stuff since it's corrosive. Check Garand forums for specific lot numbers. The Greek stuff in bandoleers that comes in spam cans is hard to beat.

I'd say if it's not a commercial Garand and it's a decent shooter, don't refinish it. These things are only going to go up in value, don't monkey with it. Keep the surface metal clean and oiled(working parts greased) so it doesn't corrode. Get yourself an armorer's manual, a very valuable piece of literature.

Posted By: Reb Cpl
Date Posted: 06 February 2008 at 1:35pm
If the bend isn't the problem, then I've got a serious issue. I've got the 'cocking handle' for lack of the proper nomenclature term- jumping the track on the side of the receiver. Its well greased, but sometimes just closing the breech is enough for it to jump track, then its jammed and I need to dismantle the entire rifle to get it back where it should be.

Your Op rod is worn out. it's jumping the rails and it needs to be replaced. Yo can get them from either, Fulton armory, Numrich, or try http://www.M1garand.com - www.M1garand.com and call TOny Pucci from Orion 7.

You's sounds borked Reb, either bent horribly(which is possible, it's supposed to be bowed away from the barrel, if it's bent another way, it's screwed) or the cam surface inside is totally worn out. Your's is built on a Lithgow cast receiver, correct? Some of those aren't supposed to be exactly in spec. but more likely than not it's the op-rod. I'd almost need to handle it to diagnose the problem, take some pics of the op rod, cam surface and lugs.

I had all sorts of feeding problems with mine until I got an armorer's manual and filed my ejector a bit. Sometimes it's something stupid.

I'll snap a few shots tonight so you can take a look. My first course of action is to replace the op rod. If it still doesn't work, well then at least I have a new piece.

If you ever have free time, and theres a gun show in your area you can try there. Often times dealers will have spare/random parts for sale cheap.

Heres the National Match we sold. Something like this would cost a little bit more.

I use the one hand reload, it's uncomfortable on the thumb and side of your hand but it's faster. I am so against slamming my thumb in there that I refuse it to happen one handed or two. I've never heard of a pressure curve from using commercial ammo. I've been firing mostly federal ammuntion along with some american eagle and havn't had a problem with either, that's interesting though.

make sure the first round from the enbloc feeds from the RIGHT.  it will minimize the risk of M1 thumb. HPX from the CMP???? They have been advertising Greek 30-06 in enblocs and 5 round stripper clips.

Yep, 5 rounds. The Greeks were using M1's up until 10 years ago.  The 5 round clips were probably used for a BAR.  I'm trying to get more information on that.  Yep, from the right. Duff's book on M1's suggested that.   Ok, you got an M1, what else have you got? Do you collect or match shoot?

CMP and other places sell aftermarket 5 round en-bloc clips, which would be good for states that only allow 5round capacity for hunting. As for shooting a rapid fire stage I'd think using a 2rnd sled for your first string would give you a better chance to get sighted in before firing off another clip.

As for good ammo, I'd been considering pulling bullets and dumping the powder, individually weighing charges, and using match grade bullets to save money on match ammo and avoid soft-primer issues, but funds haven't allowed me to do any serious shooting recently, and with the money I'm going to have to pay the state of Massachusetts for my latest bone-headed move I'll be lucky if I don't need to sell my Garand.

Sounds like your use of the 180gr commercial stuff is what borked your Op Rod. Every Garand site/forum I've been to... #1 warning is not to use comm ammo... because it'll bork your Op Rod (due to different pressure curve). I'm too ignorant to know what any of that means but I've heeded that warning.
There are qualifications you must meet to order from CMP... they're not hard to achieve. And it's worth it in the end. Show me someplace else where you can get brand new M2 30-06 delivered to your front porch for 26c/rd.

Corrosive primers will be found in a lot of 30-06 (or any other caliber milsurp) out there. Some of the Korean stuff available now has corrosive primers as well. Just means you need to clean your gun afterwards. I clean after every use... and use non-corr ammo (HXP). I'd have no concerns over using corrosive. If I could get corrosive ammo cheaper than HXP... I'd get it.

Amen to that, I hate that video games potray it like that, it isn't that difficult, sure the rounds go everywhere but what ever.

Caeesmen the ar is a bushmaster.

Update I went to the local range and fired it 40 times, worked like a dream but one of the clips kept prematurly ejecting, let the puns begin.

I definitely don't use the 180 grain commercial in the rifle. The little bit that I have shot it, I've used smaller rounds that I got from someone else. My 180s are my hunting rounds for my Ruger.

Also, as a testiment to how unwilling to slam my thumb in the m1 I am, While I was at the range today I was single loading to sight it in, wasn't hard at all, and the charging handle slipped off of the side on my hand and sent the bolt flying forward. Through reaction I tensed up my thumb and caught the bolt face with it. The firing pin dug in a little, but I didn't chop off the top of my thumb.

Yeah, it can be done, it's just that in the middle of a firefight, it'd slow you down.  Soldiers were told to empty the en-bloc clip before reloading, for that reason, but somehow that got twisted into the idea that it's physically impossible to reload with a loaded clip.

I'm amazed that the injury wasn't more severe.

If I had my thumb in the way of the bolt moving forward, I assure you I'd have a bit more to show than the imprint of the firing pin. There's no way my thumb could stop the bolt as it came forward. It'd be smashed.

Mine requires the Garand bump to send the bolt home after loading a clip, so no thumb smashing until that wears out after a few hundred rounds. I did manage to get M1 thumb single-loading an SKS. The clip guide on the bolt carrier is pretty uncomfortable, but the spring isn't as strong as a Garand.

I'm right handed and always load in such a way so the outside edge of my hand physically blocks the charging handle from moving forward should it ever decide to do so, then rock my whole hand back and out of the way quickly and administer a slap to the rear of the charging handle that sends the bolt home and move my hand out and away from the rifle in case of a slam fire, in which the reciprocating charging handle would smash me. My grandfather used a similar rifle in basic training, the Bulge and Rhineland and has never smashed his thumb under any conditions, so he's worth taking advice from.

For single loading  I place the round in the chamber and retract the charging handle, move it so the bolt is about halfway closed, then release. This slows the bolt movement as would riding over a clip and rounds would, reducing the possibility of a slam-fire. Slam fires could suck.

A slam fire was the one thing I was worried about but the bolt face and chamber were both very clean so...

The serial number on the receiver (depending on how old it is) catalogs the time frame in which it was made. There are a few that are considered "Lost" Garands (I believe they are in the 540,000-545,000 range of serial numbers) and are considered to be very valuable. Don't quote me on it, but I'm pretty sure there's websites that can tell you where and when the Rifle was made via the receiver serial number.

Rednekk has got the right idea for single shot loading. I have seen people rip off half of their thumb nail slam firing. You can do a "neglegent discharge" or an open battery discharge (not good) during slam firing. I have had some "interesting" results with the Korean 30-06. very inconsistant out of my M1, all over the paper. Just about anything else shoots nice and tight at 200 yards.  My AR's, Busmaster, Olympic and my wife's a DPMS. I like AR's.

AR's are nice but the garand is just so much more fun.

If you like the Garand, You will love the M1A/M14.

Yeah, they've got an AR50 at a pawn shop around here.  Freaking huge.

The 590 is alright, I have to put on an actual stock, right now it's just a pistol grip. Personally I am a much bigger fan of the 870, I'm much more accurate with it while skeet and trap shooting. I've often tought of getting an M1A or M14 but reloading the en bloc is so much more cool than loading a magazine.

I can't aim worth a damn when I shoot skeet. Maybe I need a tighter choke; it ends up going all over the place.

Yup, he actually said that.

Take that entire statement out of context, and it's hilarious.

I'm just the opposite, I prefer my 590 to the 870.  I love my M1's but it just doesn't beat my M1A for comfort and accuracy.  I match shoot with my M1A.  I shoot an average of 740+ out of 800. Not enough for a trip to Camp Perry. I take the Garand's out for plinking and the occasional Garand match at my local range.

On the side of the bolt of your friends Tec 9? or the reciever?

Maybe it just needs a stock and a longer barrel but my 870 dominates my 590 for skeet. However the 1100 beats them all. I got that from my grandfather who won it years ago in a raffel for 2 dollars.

That's the last one I bought^^^

It helps that I am only 45 minutes from the CMP at Camp Perry.
...and yes you can buy op-rods there.
...and yes you can buy all the ammunition you could ever shoot there too.

The one pictured above was presented to a friend as a birthday present. He sometimes posts here.
He was very happy when he got it.

FlimFlam?

Part of me is extremely jealous that you're so close to Camp Perry... as I'd definitely take advantage and spend a lot of money there.
The other part of me is extremely glad that I'm not so close to Camp Perry... as I'd definitely take advantage and spend a lot of money there.

Nah...considerably older then the FlimFlam man.

Whenever I go to CMP, I spend more time talking to the guys, and handling the weapons (in search of that diamond in the rough) then I do buying.
Which is important...since I would be a very lonely, divorced, gun whore if I didn't do it that way.

I do like to shoot up there at least once a year. I am not as good with a rifle as I once was...my eyes aren't perfect anymore
edit: The reason I don't just tell you who owns it, is simply because not everyone likes that sort of information advertised.

Understandable and I thought about that immediately after pressing Post Reply.

Edit to add:

Well... if it makes you feel any better, I was never good with a rifle.
Hope to see you at Lou's, whenever he has his next Blastfest. I could use a few pointers. And I'll definitely be bringing my Garand (amongst other things).
