BERKELEY, Calif. -- As six Republican senators devised a plan to yank
$2.3 million in federal funding for Berkeley programs, the mayor of the
famously liberal city apologized Wednesday for his hard stance against
a Marine recruiting center.
Two City Council members vowed to soften their stance as well.

While I'm glad what Berkeley has done, this is a good example of the feds using a loophole in the Constitution, using money to control local government.

They reversed direction in order to keep their money. I sincerely doubt that they'll be any less hostile to the Marines then they are now, but they'll paint on a smile, and word a few official documents differently and that'll be it.
The Corps is still ostracized within the city, but now they're out the $2 million

Why would the government want to pay for a marine recruiting center in a city that is hostile to them and does not want them there?

Marine*
And because there is always someone who wants to enlist. Just because it's a liberal city doesn't mean there aren't people that want to serve their country.
""I was under the impression that we have the right of free speech," said Xanne Joi of Code Pink. "To me, I thought free speech meant you get to say what you want without recrimination.""
Oh, you can say what you want, but don't expect to be rewarded for a position that most of the country disagrees with.
I say still take the 2.3 mil away just to show we won't take that kind of attitude toward any of the military.

take the money anyways...use it instead to build a base in the city... a jet base...

That 2.3mil was allocated for transportation funding, not food.
Telling someone who should be more than welcome to leave isn't very nice either.
I kind of want to fly out there just to walk in and enlist while Code Pink is there.

Did I say that? No.
The gov't is allowed to spend money how they want, and if they don't want to send it to a city who disrespects the military, that is their decision and right, is it not?

When it comes to ear marked money, yes they can. This is a case in point.

No, it cannot.
Laws (including the constitution) governing government spending still apply. Congress cannot unilaterally make exceptions to existing law.

How about you quote the WHOLE thing so it's not taken out of context... then again you're a journalism major and that's your job; take things out of context to spin it your way.
People are allowed to disrespect the military in that manner and I'm not allowed to disagree with it?
That make sense...sure does.

Because the Marines don't just pack up and go when things get tuff.

While all of you argueing Linus' Trivial point you missed a very compeling argument by Cedric.
I just Wikied the South Dakota vs Dole http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Dakota_v._Dole - here and while still reading up on other sources on this case. I do have an Opinion on the whole Finatial Siege of Burkley.
While I don't think that the city has any right to interfere with a recruiting station. I as a father and a Marine I dont see how taking away money for chow to kids is doing anything than feeding the monster and giving lamo hippy groups like Code Pink. Ammo to use against the Marine Corps.
The Solution is simpler. Since the City of Burkley thinks they can interfere with lawfull Military Activities within US Soil. I say we give the Marine recruiting office a detachment of US Marshalls who dont answer to the local boased hippy city council of Burkley and arrest any of these beatnicks who break the law and harrass, interfere and of course tresspass upon the Recruiting station.

EE, did you read what the money for chow is going to? It is going towards providing the kids with gourmet organic junk. It is not the only money that the schools have to chow, it is for extra junk.

While I think the rest of your post is a little unconstitutional, I agree with this.
Being on a college campus, and considering myself to be pretty moderate, I cannot stand idiot leftist groups like Code Pink.
All they do is spout off about how much stuff sucks, but don't really know why.
If you are going to say "Bush sucks!" at the very least understand which policies you don't like.
