This may be old news around here but I wanted to see if anyone knew any recent news about these. They're rods, about 20 feet long and 1 foot in diameter (think telephone pole) and made of this tungsten material, that are launched from satellites. According to a guy at work they can do all the damage of an earth penetrating nuke without the fallout.

Interesting concept. Seems like it would be traveling so fast it would be difficult to guide accurately for taking out a single tank or something. I wonder if they ever got to testing it.

I don't think they can do as much damage as a nuclear bomb...

A 2 ton kenetic energy projectile striking the earth at trans-sonic speeds would have the impact energy release of several nuclear weapons, as well as a massive cratering effect, siesmic shock, and throw tons of particulate matter into the atmosphere.

Deep Impact ring a bell, or look at the exsisting craters on earth, or moon. IN Astro-Lab dropped a 1 lb steel ball, from 2 meters into a sand surface created a crater 24 inches across, and 3.5 in deep, threw sand 3m in all directions. Now multiply that by 4000, faster speed harder object..........

I don't think it would be for taking out a single tank. Probably for wiping out large areas.

Sounds like a great way for the US gov to use up whats left of the tungsten left on earth.

No thanks.  I don't want to see what comes up when you type in "Rods from God" on google.   It really does sound like a neat concept though.

I think you should be safe on the web search, but just dont try an image search if your safe search is off.

I think it is a highly interesting concept and you're right it isn't for taking out tanks but large areas. I guess during re-entry/entry the heat and speed has effects on the tungsten similar to that of a rail-gun i.e plasma coating around the material.

sounds like it has too many variables to be feesible to be used accuratly on any thing other than a whole country. the whole "vaporize the earths atmosphere" part also gives me that warm fuzzy feeling inside.

When it comes down to it they're proposing to make the world's most expensive and complicated stick to hit people with. It's a worldwide nuclear-scale schoolyard stick fight.

Also, you do not get more phallic than this. Not only is it a huge metal rod, but it's divine as well. This huge godly rod will smite enemies the world over, no matter what hole they choose to hide in. It will ram its way in and flush them out with an earth shattering orgas... impact.

It is not only a huge phallic weapon of a potentially galactic nature. It is the galaxy's biggest e-peen.

Apparently you missed the whole "rail gun" discussion.

Falling from orbit, going many times the speed of sound, and weighing A LOT, will cause a lot of damage.

Yeah, I did. And just how big of a "rod" are we talking? A 20 foot rod with a 1 foot diameter as mentioned in the first post?

I lol'ed at reifidom's post.

Anyone thought about getting it up there?   Conservation of energy still applies to getting something in orbit.  Depending on how heavy this rod actually is, it would be one hell of a job (one hell of a rocket) to launch it.

Is this thing supposed to have something increasing the downward velocity? If it is just lifted up into space and then just dropped towards the earth, wouldnt it just reach its terminal velocity and fall return to earth at said rate?

Quoted from Wiki:
"The weapon inflicts damage because it moves at orbital velocities, at least 9 kilometers per second. The amount of energy released by the largest version when it hits the ground is roughly comparable to a small nuclear weapon or very large conventional bomb. Smaller weapons can deliver measured amounts of energy as small as a 500 lb conventional bomb."

I'm assuming they mean it goes into orbit and then slightly deviates course to start it's decent to Earth. Like tying a rock to a rope and swinging it in a circle and letting it go.

That's what I think of when I read it but I could be wrong.

You wouldn't be imagining much, that's for certain.

All I know is that it would be one hell of a sight to see.
