So, I bought an ipod touch in the middle of January, like a week before the January Update came out. So, I was on apples site, and saw a customer service link, had nothing better to do, and wrote a complaint basically saying that it's not fair that I have to pay the 20 bucks for the update because if I had waited a few days, I could have gotten it free pre installed on a new ipod, and I could have even returned mine to get a new one in exchange, but didn't want to go through the hassle. It didn't matter if I got it or not and thought I wasn't to anyways, but like I said, I had nothing better to do and it was worth a shot. So I write the email, the next day I am told they are very sorry and all I had to do was purchase the update, send them the transaction code, and they would refund me all my money. Awesome, so I write back thanking them and everything, and I am told my money will be in my account within a few days. I get another email today saying I have to refresh my account to get the added money, and low and behold, I have the $20 and what's this, 3 movie credits. They apologized and said the movies were complimentary and to make up for the hassle. Apple rocks my socks. Any movie suggestions? I'm definitely saving one for step up 2, but other than that I'm open to suggestions
TL;DR: Apple rocks, they gave me a free iPod Touch January Update ($20 value) and 3 free movie downloads for my "hassle".

Yeah, paying for updates is pretty lame.
I wish Sony had as good customer service though. My PS3 died and I missed the extended warranty (for systems purchased in Nov-Dec of 2007) because I bought it on January 3rd 2007. I am now paying Sony $150 for a refurbished system in exchange.
Congrats

In other Apple news, they just announced that they will sometime soon release software that will allow the iPhone (and Touch?) to use third-party software - which Windows Mobile/Palm devices have been doing for almost a decade now.
Apple rocks indeed.

Apple is actually really cruddy about making their customers pay for software updates that would otherwise be free if they were for a different operating system. For example. Since the launch of OS-X, apple has generated 5 'new' OS-X pieces. While each piece can receive free "updates" for that particular version, to get support and update past about the 2-year mark, you have to purchase a 'new' version of OS-X. To put it in layman's terms, it'd be like Microsoft making you pay $180 for SP-1 and SP-2 for XP rather than just including the updates for free like they do. What's worse is that any peripherals you might want to use with your Mac usually require the latest OS to operate correctly. For example, the new Nano, Touch, etc. all require you to have at least OS-X V 10.4.5 or higher to be compatible with the iPods. That means an OS that is 3 years old or less just to use an MP3 player. Hell, XP is what, 7 years old now?

Each little "os" increment is hardly just a patch or SP. Leopard is a big step up, and more than you'd ever get through an update.

How many generations of the ipod could you run on osx that were older than 10.4.5 though. I mean there is just a point where you can't get things to work together without a major update. IMO all the osx updates up until now were fairly optional, I know lots of people who didn't update right away when the new os's came out. The only reason my family does it, is because well my dad gets the disks from work and makes copies, or leopard he got for free, because he works at the apple store now, and then he just gives it to all of us for our computers. Definitely not legal, but hey I see no reason in buying the family addition when you can get it for free.

How about a good free one then?
http://www.ubuntu.com/ - Debian is GOD!
XP, btw, is actually a rather good OS, by far the most stable that MS has ever put out aside from 2000NT. Saying that Any current iteration of OS-X is "better" than any current iteration of XP is simply not true. Honestly, it's comparing apples to oranges (no pun intended). However, arguing that point with a Mac user is pretty much pointless as Apple fanboys are about as rabidly blind and un-yielding as Sony fanboys.

I totally agree. I still think it's stupid that its such a huge hassle to put 3rd party crap on the iPhone/ Touch, considering that anyone who normally would install third party apps would be smart enough to figure out how. Come on steve jobs, you got your start hacking phones....

But you also have to take in to account that the iPhone/touch were both released early. Jobs launched them because the market was getting upset that they hadn't seen the phone yet. So in order not to turn possible buyers away he released it. Now less than a year later they are releasing the use of third party apps. had we waited we probably would have seen that at the launch of the phone/iPod.

You're argument is really weak, IMO. The iPhone has been a HUGE success any way you look at it, regardless of third-party availability. The update will only make them that much more popular.

Big Macs are a huge success as well. Doesn't make them good hamburgers.
The iPhone is all flash. The interface is very nice and innovative, but there is nothing new in terms of actual functionality, and it is actually significantly behind market standards when compared to similarly priced devices (or even cheaper ones).
So they develop a nice new interface and attach it to yesteryear's phone. gg

You make a good argument, but you may be missing the actual point of the iPhone. It's NOT targeted to be a BlackBerry/Palm/PDA business killer. The goal was to combine all aspects of entertainment (iPod + internet + phone/text) into one simple, easy to use device. I would say it achieved that goal. Granted, it is behind other devices in certain categories - still no MMS, no 3G network, etc. However, show me a device that seamlessly integrates music, movies, internet capability, phone use, camera, so on and so forth, better than the iPhone does. Oh, and I would say the Multitouch screen is quite an innovation. Has there been others like it? Sure, but none better or easier to use. Again, the iPhone is for ENTERTAINMENT. Show me one better...

Oh I'm sorry, where's your 3G internet browsing and video calling? What if you wanted to send someone a picture message? What if you wanted to make a ringtone for the iPhone? It just isn't as customizable as the other phones available. Aside from your lacking features, the worst thing about the iPhone is the AT&T locked OS.

Better? Easy. ALL of the WM devices, while generally aimed at business users, do all of those things. I use my WM phone as my inflight entertainment system. I can run thousands of aftermarket video games, I use it for music and video (using aftermarket players if I choose, which I do), I use it for ebooks, I have 3G internet connectivity, I have a 2mp camera with flash and video, I can send video messages, and I can make it do virtually anything I want - specifically because of aftermarket software.
I will certainly admit that there are some things the iPhone does better than my phone, but on the whole it isn't even close. While WM devices may be aimed primarily at business users, they are also superior consumer devices. Other than the multitouch interface, my phone can basically do everything the iPhone can do, and then another thousand things as well that the iPhone cannot.
For business use there is no competition, but even for normal folks the WM devices are generally just flat out better.
EDIT - Did HV just say you can't even make ringtones for the iPhone? That's just retarded. I can use any mp3/wma/whatever audio file for my ringtone. Create it on my PC, sync it to the phone, and voila - ringtone. Right now I am using the middle part of Grieg's Hall of the Mountain King, which I ripped from a CD.

Motorola has been making phones for like 15 years now, maybe longer, Apple has been doing it for less than 1. To use Susan's analogy... I don't care if your burger has sun ripened tomatos, freshly sliced super duper pickles, Dijon mustard, and homemade mayonnaise, if the meat still isn't that good, than the burger is a failure. The "meat" of the iPhone (i.e. user interface, touchscreen, integration) IS good. The features will come in time.
EDIT: Susan, the same applies to you. The only faults y'all can find with the iPhone are that of features. The features WILL come.

And this is one of the places where I think the iPhone has the advantage. Most other devices have limited onboard memory with a slot, but 8/16 GB is more memory than you will get out of a card anyway.
