Right now I'm pretty committed to building a guitar. I've done a quick model of what I'm thinking of building (essentially an archtop SG style guitar). My other main idea was a hollow or semi-hollow body SG style guitar. As for the neck, I will probably build the neck but buy a fingerboard because I don't yet trust myself with the accuracy needed to make one. The specs I'm thinking right now: EMG 85 active pickup (neck) EMG H4 passive pickup (bridge) Tune-o-matic bridge Dual tone / volume and 3 way switch 22 frets (maybe 24) Here is the model of the archtop I drew up a few minutes ago:   |

Definitely go with 24 frets. Also, you're essentially going to build a Gibson SG, but putting EMG electronics in it? Instead of a Tune-o-matic, I'd personally use a nice Floyd Rose, but thats personal preference on my part. -------------

I guess I am, but instead of paying $1000 for an SG standard this should be less than $400 easily, and hopefully sound just as good (hah!). I really do think the hollow body would be cool, but that would add a lot of complexity. I've had a guitar with a Floyd Rose, and I still prefer the Tune-o-matic, in performance and looks. |

Semi-hollows aren't that hard to build at all. Heck, I contemplated building one a while back. But, what DON'T I contemplate building? Anyway, I'll draw up some pics of how I'd build a semi-hollow and post them. I got to thinking today, I might just go for a 12 string. I've always wanted one but don't have the money to shell out for a 12 string electric. Maybe I should go all out and build a dual neck 12 / 6 string. DeTrev, I look forward to seeing them! |

How good are you at a normal 6-string? 12's are NOT beginner friendly, and tuning them is the biggest PITA in world of stringed instruments, excepting of course a harp... ------------- Evil Elvis: "Detrevni is definally like a hillbilly hippy from hell"

Wood is important, and depending on what kind of wood you use, it can cost more than the $400 you want to spend. I bought some ebony to make a fretboard and it was $135 shipped. The machine heads, neck, frets and truss rod require lots of work. I plan on enrolling in a luthier school mostly to do repairs but it would be fun to build a complete guitar. ------------- Imagine there’s a picture of your favourite thing here. |

And here's a quick MSpainting of how I'd build a semi-hollow:
Needless to say, the wood choice is up to you, and obviously, you're gonna have to cut out sound holes (I really didn't want to draw those in...). This is just a general idea, so it's not accurate. Most normal people don't own sitar's, we are not all Prodigy. Also, if you're new, definitely do NOT go 12 string, also invest in good quality wood, don't cheap out or tone will suffer. -------------

Looks good, mang! Though your design is a bit hard to tell which parts are hollowed out. You are gonna need a "core" to mount the hardware and pickups.
