Anyone who drinks wine ever tried a bottle of Yellow Tail? It's pretty good stuff. Very dark reds, and I'm not sure if they make any whites but I'm pleased and surprised I can type as well as I can.

It's pretty good stuff, we serve it at the place I work. They do have a chardonnay and a pinot grigio but I like reds more than white, and the merlot or cabernet is pretty good.

My room mate's frat did the 'Tour De Franzia' last night where they raced in drinking a bag of wine.  He came back and puked in his bed then slept in it.

Boxed wine is sure classy...

I like wine in small amounts, I come from a big wine drinking family but i've never been able to sit down and drink more than one glass.

The stuff coming from our region (niagara falls region) is some of the best wine in the world. A lot of high quality wine is made only a town or two over.

I've never had a taste for red wines.

I like white wines like Piesporter and Gewürztraminer.

Same. My dad and my stepmom drink wine almost exclusively. They won't drink beer at all, but thats all I really drink. I don't really enjoy drinking wine except at dinner.

Keep an eye out in the paper for Wine Tasting parties, they're kind of expensive, but they can be a lot of fun.

I've been to a couple of those. I was thinking of perhaps going to one while in California at the end of this month but I wont necessarily be in 'wine country' while i'm down there.

Yellow Tail is pretty good stuff, and for the price it is outright amazing.

And for all the box snobs - while most wine served in boxes in the US is pretty atrocious, boxes are slowly catching on around the world, particularly in Australia, where several major wineries are experimenting with boxes, twist-caps, and other tradition-violating innovations.  Go Aussies!

I don't think i've ever even seen boxed wine before. Probably more of an american thing than anything.

I wouldn't say the best, but good for the price.

As for Australian wines, they're alright, but not nearly as good as the hype has been suggesting. Australia's climate is only good for a few varietals. New Zealand on the other hand, produces a much wider variety of wines with excellent characteristics that are far subtler than those grown in the Aussie climate. However NZ wines are usually very limited in production with the exception of a few due to the limited land available for cultivation. Australia reminds me of Cali back in the 80's. Producing a competent wine, but going for quantity rather than quality. California has since changed that business model successfully due to the climate and soil. Australia doesn't have the climate and soil conditions needed to produce more refined wines, so they will never be able to get away from their "Quantity over Quality" approach. The only thing they DO have in abundance in Australia's SE region is land.

Now, if you want to find some really GREAT wines at the same price you'd be plunking down for Yellowtail (maybe a few bucks more a bottle) then you need to look to Chile and Argentina. I highly suggest Catena (though they can be pricey) and absolutely DEMAND that you try any offerings from Montes Vineyards that you can get your hands on. Cab Sav, Malbec, Syrah, Zin, and Chard. You can still find the Reserve Montes Cab for around $10-$14 depending on your local.

As for wine that I normally drink:
Ridge York Creek Zinfandel
Moet et Chandon Brut Rose Imperial
Veuve Cliquot Yellow Label
Veuve Cliquot Grande Dame (Whenever I can get it)
Veuve Cliquot Demi-Sec
Iron Horse Russian Cuvee
Iron Horse Brut Rose
Black And Green Zin (Russian River)
Argyle Pinot Noir
Canus Conundrum
Montes Reserva Cabernet
Montes Alpha Cabernet
Montes Malbec
Sketchbook Zin
Wishing Tree Zin
Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon
Heitz Cellar Zinfandel
Chateau Neuf De Pape (Any Red from that region)

Just to name a few.

Some box wine isn't that bad. You just have to know which ones to get. We haven't had bottled wine in my house for awhile. Of course, my mom likes to drink wine and drinking high cost wine would be foolish.

I'm not a big wine fan. I'll drink some with a nice dinner but that's about all I care for. My dad really likes the riesling produced at the Columbia Winery up in Washington. Not bad for a white wine imo(I prefer reds).

Alright, stop screwing up my thread. I would however like more suggestions as to brands. Price isn't an option, I feel as though you should always have an expensive bottle of wine on hand *that is decent* for special occasions. Living in Washington, I have plenty of the Columbia Winery brands to chose from. In fact, if anyone ever visists I suggest taking the Dinner Train as the food is good and in the middle you take a tour of the Columbia Winery. Great experience and for a decent ticket price.

I swear to god, if you failed any harder, you'd need medication.

I'm slowly getting back into drinking wine after a poor choice decision that involved a gallon jug of red table wine when I was in high school. For almost 5 years afterwards, the mere smell of red wine was enough to send me fleeing in terror at the memories of a near death experience.

I am a huge fan of meade (honey wine) though. In fact, the final toast at our wedding last September was with meade, in keeping with the Irish tradition (where the term 'honeymoon' derived from)

Agreed. The pinot grigio for white and the cabernet for red are great. I try various types here and there, but if I want a sure thing I go with Yellow Tail.

Moscati D'Asti is a great dessert wine. It's ok (pretty palatable actually) with dinner, but it's very sweet and a lot of people would like it after dinner.

Chaucer's Mead is a good dessert wine, but that is some seriously sweet stuff. You won't need much of it unless you've got a wild sweet tooth. It's honey wine.

Actually, in our 100+ bottle collection, I don't think we have a single bottle made in the US. The US has never took me as being a country where much fine wine is produced.

I suggest buying some cheap bottled wine and just keep it for years then sell it or enjoy it. Some cheap wine turns into a $150 bottle if you hold it for a while.

Wow Carl, seriously, California wines have become the pinnacle of success. There are wineries there that consistently produce top vintages year after year that sell for over $500/bottle from the start. This isn't a 1964 LaTorre that has appreciated in value over the past 44 years, it's merely a few years in oak and ready for market and selling at that price.

That said, I'm going to be enjoying a nice bottle of Pommery of Reims, long considered to be the seat of the best Champagne houses in France, this Saturday evening and will more than likely proceed on to steak tartar paired with a lovely Chateauneuf-du-Pape and more than likely finish with a wonderful Armagnac and chocolate fondant.

Sorry MBD, but there's none of those on the http://www.danieloconnells.com/menus.jsp - wine list at O'Connell's at the moment.

Seriosuly new to me.

But it surpried me more that people haven't heard of fine Canadain wines.

Eville: Possibly, but american beer is pretty crappy from what i've heard/experienced.

Absolutely no clue man.

It was a while ago and I don't remember because it was pretty bad. I remember it was fairly mainstream beer.

That plus what I have heard from word of mouth too.

I live here, and the mass produced beers are just awful *bud, busch, etc* with a few acceptions. Sam Adams is decent, and Micro Brews such as Mac N' Jacks are delicious.

As for wines (the sujbect of the thread) I'm thinking about trying a few different types such as pommegranite and the like. Anyone ever had decent experiences with these?

As for American Wines Carl, have you tried some from the NW region? Cailfornia wines are super easy to find now adays and are quite good (accept for one bottle of a Pinot Nior that I had that was awful) and are decently priced but check out some from the Columbia Winery if you haven't already.

miller and bud... lulz.

oh... and canada has this:

and you're saying we have bad beer?

come on... most mass produced beer is crap.  I can handle most miller products... high life light is pushing it, i only drink that on $1 bottles, and 10 cent wing night.

btw, if anyone comes to milwaukee, I'll treat you to some brewery tours of the couple smaller places around here.

I just want to point out that I never said american wines were bad, just not what I thought of when I thought of fine wine.

Googled and not sure what NW means but if it's American, I probably haven't tried it.

Labatt blue is owned by an american company.

It is also crap.

Ever try creemore? It is a semi-massed produced beer from about 3 hours from here. One of the best beers that I have ever tried.

Heineken is pretty good and so is steam whistle which is another Canadian beer.

NW=compass direction=North West. So places like Washington and Oregon. Normally it includes Idaho, but that would just be a joke. Hicks can't produce anything accept redneck jokes and inbread children.

i really don't have a preference when it comes to beer, so longs its not a light beer. i really just hate those, imo they have no flavor what so ever. i'm a fan of sam adams, and as i get across the country on an eventual road trip i plan on getting some different types to see what else is out there other than stuff here on the island in NY

You'll treat them to a free tour?   :)

BTW, I love how a wine thread very quickly became a beer thread.  Proves the audience.

I'm not saying Hendrix is bad, just not what I thought about when I thought of good guitar players.
