Thats right, Shenko is hosting another Tradewars brawl! For the newbies, Tradewars is an old school BBS doorgame, played in text. Fly around the universe in one of many ships, make profit, try not to get owned by aliens, and blow up other forumers. To play, if you have windows (not vista), Start, Run, Telnet shenko.homedns.org On a mac or linux, open a terminal and telnet shenko.homedns.org Vista doesnt have telnet for some dumb reason, but theres a million telnet clients up for download. I would suggest a nicer one than the windows client anyway, as it doesnt support color. When you connect, just follow the menu prompts to make a new account. If you get lost in the game, just type ? to see the menu of commands, or type ` (the key left of 1) to talk to everyone connected. If you have Windows Vista here are instructions to install Telnet. Go to Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows Features On or Off Check Telnet Client. Click Ok. Then you are good. Now you can access Tradewars as Enos stated above. And Windows XP and Windows Vista's stock Telnet Clients support color. No reason to go third party. -------------

ok, i'll explain some of the game, I enjoy a target rich environment. If you are ever confused about what to do, type "?" a lot of the commands are self explanatory. Don't attack feds, ports, or anything else stronger than you. If you are at the level of destroying feds, then you don't need my help. Fly around the galaxy, and trade to get money. Destroy other people, or civilians and lower your rep, lower it enough and you become a pirate. Attack pirates to raise rep. Raise it enough, and you can become a fed, and get some cool ships. When you start out, you will have a planet, name it something stupid, because you don't want to stay here. Find yourself a one-way, thats a sector that only has one entrance and exit, you're less likely to get discovered. The starport is at Sector 777, and Earth/Terra is at sector 1. Use the starport to buy new ships and stuff, and use Terra, to pick up peoples, and deposit them on your new planets. Build stuff up, to make it a fortified base. Get yourself aquainted with the menus before you try to go crazy. Beware of Enos, he has laced the whoile place with random mines. |

lol, last night i went on a killing spree, unfortunately, before i bought a really nice ship, I got blown up my mines. So I used the money I got from pillaging and trading in rambino's ship to buy a nice ship, which in turn got blown up by aliens. now i gotta get some money built up again. |

Basic strategy: Dont just attack everything on sight, unless youre ready to take on anyone that wants revenge  Find 2 sectors right next to each other that have ports buying and selling opposite stuff, then buy from one, sell to the other, rinse and repeat for lots of money. Dont use your starting planet as a main base. Its usually not in a good spot. Look for a sector thats a dead-end, and make a base there, that way its much harder to find if anyone goes hunting for you. If you get blown up, youre in an escape pod. If you have spare cash, fly back to 777 and buy a new ship at the spacedock. If you get blown up in an escape pod, the game locks you out for 24 hours. Its a good idea to get money and buy a "spare" ship and hide it somewhere, so if you get blown up, you can just go get in your emergency ship and get back to business. -------------

Buy stuff at a trading post and sell at another trading post. Trading posts are shown when you go in and out of sectors. To enter the trading post press P than T. To find out if a post is selling or buying next to the name is usually 3 letters (ex BBB, or BSB). B= buy, S= sell. And the first slot is for Ore, second is Organics, and third is Equipment. So SBS would mean that post sells Ore, buys Organics, and sells Equipment. -------------

Another tip: Your ship stays wherever you are when you log out. So dont just park in the middle of nowhere or someone might come along and blow you up. You can park in sectors 1 through 10, and the feds will yell at anyone that tries to attack you. -------------

Sorry! People on chat persueaded me to fire up the old game server and host a game. This is a VERY small game. 1000 sectors is tiny. We used to run 10,000 sector games usually, much harder to find people and get into trouble. I edited the original post to link to a guide I wrote for the very first Tippmann Forum Tradewars game, so check it out, its got a huge amount of beginner information. -------------

Game has been reset. I didnt realize this many people were going to play, and 1,000 sectors was tiny for that amount. So, new game has 5,000 sectors, extra aliens, the hostile aliens from last time should be less powerful. Now that you guys know how to play, a larger size game is MUCH funner, its alot easier to hide and build up a base in a game this size. Also less chance of just being stumbled across and nuked. -------------

More like I'm the one getting nuked. My home sector, which was coming along nicely, got pwned by Enos and Cheesus while I was at work. Now I have to rebuild all of it. That's what I get for spending too much money helping n00bs, and not enough putting up defenses. -------------
