I have always rented Tippmanns when I go painballing so I am looking forward to purchase my first Tippmann. I need some help with which marker to choose. I have about $250 max to spend, so a nice package will do also. Something that will last a while and that has good upgrades for the future. Thanks.

Well do you want to play speedball or woodsball? Do you want to milsim your marker?

Just make sure you shop around, I don't know where you live so I can't tell you which stores to visit. Prices can vary drastically and your 250 will last longer if you look. Don't buy the tippy packages from non paintball stores because you will most likely be getting ripped off. Even between two paintball stores i have seen a 100$ tank for 30 in other places.

If you want to stretch your buck more I would go with the custom 98 as opposed to the other tippmanns. Buy a 30$ mask, shop around for tank deals and you may not even be at 200 yet depending on the version of the M98 you get.

Describe a little more what you'd like.

Plan on spending at least 40-50 on a decent mask. Do not buy one of the packages as the mask included is junk and you will end up buying a new one anyways. You can find 20 oz Co2 tanks at several online stores for under $20.00. This should leave you with approx 170-180 for the actual marker. What you get depends on what you plan on doing with it. You also might want to look around on Ebay and other sites like PBNation. You can pick up used equipment most times for 1/2 the price of new in order to stretch your dollar. IMO, I would start with the best basic marker you can afford and plan on upgrading later. In other words, if you can find an basically stock A-5 with e-grip for $175 used, I would purchase that rather than a 98 custom that has shrouds, stocks, and a bunch of other add ons that after awhile you may not like and end up removing. Keep in mind too that the A-5 comes fron the stock with the cyclone feeder which if added to the 98 makes them pretty comporable in price.

Look in to the smartparts sp1 too.  I was going to get an A5 or a 98c plat when I saw this gun in the pb store and I love it it is quiet has select fire, no chop bolt, easy to clean, about the same price they were selling the 98c plat for $140 the SP-1 is $150, has a mil sim look, it is well balanced.  the only thing is you get the cyclone with the tippmanns and the feed neck on the SP-1 is in the center but with 2 eyes open it is not major issue.I don't have one yet but in the next few weeks i will.

chaibill,

You've tried to talk people into buying an SP1 in four separate threads, yet you admit . . .

. . . in forum_posts.asp?TID=174945&PN=1 - this thread that you don't even own one.  Suggesting a marker based on a good experience with it is one thing; suggesting it based on what you read in the advertising copy is a different matter entirely.

You should probably quit pimpin' for SP until you have actually purchased/used the marker in question.

I am including links to the threads in question and am also going to paste this post in every thread as a "heads-up" to those who may be mislead into thinking your advice is based on experience.

for 250 total and a good gun I would suggest either an Alpha (for milsim look) or an A5.  Personally I like the A5 over the 98 just for personal preference but both are really good guns.  The  packages you find normally dont have a very good mask but sometimes places will let you pay the difference (I did that at Dicks Sporting goods for my first gun). http://www.paintballdiscounters.com - www.paintballdiscounters.com and http://www.actionvillage.com - www.actionvillage.com have some decent packages and some of the better ones even have a mask included.

I second the Alpha. This is the best for MilSim and just a great basic gun. It would cost you at leats twice the amount of what you paid for a 98C/A5 to make it look like an M4, and the Alpha is a 98C with a MilSim body. I made my 98C into a M4 and regret all the money I spent on it, but that was way before the Alpha came out.

I disagree, a mask should be your priority.  Look for something really good, even if it's used.  Maybe a profiler or something, and do your research.  Make sure you can swap out the lenses easily and that they don't cost much.

A mask is an investment much like an air tank, don't cheap out because it will end up costing you more in the future.

RavenGuard is quite right:  A mask is the most important piece of paintball equipment that any player owns.  It is not the place to "go cheap."  For further information, I suggest you read section 1 of http://www.tippmann.com/forum/wwf77a/forum_posts.asp?TID=163015&PN=1&TPN=1 - this post.

Third on the alpha. With the money left over from buying the AB, you can spend it on a tank or a decent mask. Its a great marker out of the box too, one hell of a bang for the buck. I used it all day at a scenario over my assortment of A5s, an X7, and an ION.
