The Mayans predicted the end of the to be in 2012, I was merely asking for opinions on the subject.

Not so much the end of the world. The Mayan calendar simply ends on the winter solstice of 2012, and when referenced by the Mayans, it was labeled as a "Celestial Event" or "Spiritual Awakening". That could mean all of the planets in our solar system aligning, a visit from Aliens, something like that. There is no Mayan pictograph or scripture that spells out "The world is ending in 2012".

Because an ancient civilization of superstitious warmongers is a very credible source on these matters.

All the other nutball end-of-the-world predictions turned out to be false - but THIS TIME it's gonna work, I can just feel it.  I refuse to learn from experience or reality.

Anyone can throw random dates out of their pooper and say it's the last day of Earth. At least Edison had some credible theories and information that isn't based off of cave markings from 2000 years ago.

The whole reason it's odd is because the Mayans had one of the first accurate calendars several thousand years back.
Why would 2012 be the cutoff of such a long calendar?
Was it just random choice, or is that the day the aliens that created Earth come back and blow it up?

1) 2012 might seem random to us. The Mayans knew not of the story of Jesus, so it could just be that the calendar was some significant multiple of a number.

2) The only reason humanity would end on 2012 is if world leaders try to bring about the end because it's been predicted. There are tons of leaders out there who wish to fulfill end times prophecies.

3) This isn't trial and error. This isn't one person working towards a goal. It's random people citing random end times dates for random reasons.

As in we should keep making predictions until we randomly get one "right"?

I don't think that's how trial and error works...

Oh man, my brother is a big believer in this 2012 crap. His justification is that whenever he turns on the TV and actually bothers to turn it to the History Channel, there is always something on regarding the end fo the world and the Mayans. Here's one major problem people seem to over look: The Mayans are still around. that's right folks, they didn't mysteriously die off like everyone thinks. Just go to the Yukitan *sp* penninsula and you will find plenty of them. Sorry they aren't all dressed up in traditional war paint and feathers but they are in fact mayans.

What will happen in 2012 is that the sun and the earth and the center of the milky-way will all lign up. The thing is that the center of the milky-way galaxy is that it has a 'black hole' in it (supposedly). With the milky-way being the center of this cosmos sandwich, people are speculating as to what will happen when the sun shines through the black hole. Also, the earth will complete a rare cycle of its rotational 'wabble' and from this, the poles (north and south) will shift. This wont be the first time that the poles will shift, as it happens every 10,000 years or so.

Basically, morons who dont want to do anything productive for the next 4 years believe in this theory so as to have a good excuse for being lazy.

December 20th 2012=SOMETHING interesting might happen, but not the end of the world. I'm going to laugh in my brothers face so bad when the 21st rolls around and everything is normal accept my compas.

Umm...the Mayan calender doesn't predict the end of the world in 2012.  The Mayan calender just ends.  All that means is they didn't feel like repeating stuff that had already been done before.  It's like saving calendars, and eventually, all the days and dates from 1995 will match up again, and you won't have to buy like a 2054 calender, cause the '95 dates will work.

Read about it. The Mayans were somehow able to calculate out celesial alignments to such precision, that they knew on winter solstice 2012 earth, celestial bodies, and the galactic center will be in perfect alignment.

Im not saying anything is going to happen, but it is amazing that they predicted an astronomical event so precisely. Not to mention the sun IS due to pole-change on solstice 2012...

That makes sense. What I meant in my quote is that some people try to place religious significance on it because it's near the 2000 year mark; and they shouldn't.

Other people. Many end times theorists try to equate this day with their own religious doomsday beliefs. I'm simply saying that there is no Abrahamic significance to the Mayan calendar.

Enos: I just looked up some sites that tell me that the alignment is not necessarily true or even possible. That means somebody somewhere is speaking out of his ass about this. I would say it's probably not possible considering our solar system's orientation to the galaxy.

What is it with you and stupid threads lately?
The Mayans predicted the end of the to be in 2012, I was merely asking for opinions on the subject.
Because an ancient civilization of superstitious warmongers is a very credible source on these matters.
Then tell Me, all knowing and omnipotent Skillet, what are your thoughts upon the impending doom of Humanity and Earth? All things must end someday.
We'll kill each other in a nuclear war.  Thats how the story ends.
And what if this War takes place in 2012?
Then it won't be the Mayans fault, it will be circumstance.  Stop trying to act like Carl already, jesus christ..

Exactly when have I acted like this?
In every thread you troll.  Now leave me be.

THERE IT IS AGAIN, GET THE CAMERA; THE LAST PICS WERE BLURRY.

You might not troll, but the way you use questions as responses for so many of your posts is incredibly annoying.

Worse than recieving crappy responses having nothing to do with what I had said or asked?

Umm, you do it in nearly every thread, while I've posted something you consider irrelevant in just this one, right?

Can you tell me what would seem worse?

Does this incessant question asking not seem pretentious at all?

Nope, that was completely relevant, why?

I'd say recieving responses that in now way explain themselves and just restate their opinion over and over is worse. I didn't know there was anything wrong with asking why someone thinks that way but apparently, I was wrong.

I have no problem with the question asking, it often gives structure to a debate.

I've never seen a (structured [hah]) debate where a participant endlessly asks the other questions.

Regardless of the structure, it's typically demeaning, juvenile, and pretentious to think you can make your point by asking questions as often as you do, and it usually isn't a good method of making counter points, only pointing out minute flaws within an argument.

And there isn't anything wrong with it, just the excessive use of it, such as what you do.

You are exagerating. My debate is not based on endless questions, I just use them to continue and prove a point. How can I properly debate with someone who didn't properly explain their point?

I do admit when I am wrong

That makes the debate one sided continually build on their point, you don't refute anything they say through adequately through questions, you only put off a proper response, and by the time you feel they have made their point the only thing that can really be argued is semantics.

And you are assuming that because YOU feel they did not properly explain their point, that it is on them to make you understand.

All of that makes the debate structurally flawed.

I've yet to see you "properly" debate anyone, anyway.

But I can't make a proper reply to an unclear argument.

Also, I do refute their point properly. As I said, you are exagerating.

"And you are assuming that because YOU feel they did not properly explain their point, that it is on them to make you understand."

When I do this, it is because their point is along the lines of: "It is because I say so!"

"I've yet to see you "properly" debate anyone, anyway."

Maybe that's because you should be reading my post rather than replying based on who i am.

Plenty of people make clear points, Carl. You need to learn how to interpret what people are saying.

Wow, what a wonderful and proper refutation. You give me one-liners and think I care who you are.

I guess I didn't "read your posts" when I offered the help in your exercise thread, or let who you are prevent me from helping you set up your xchat.

Solid argument.

A dog is not complete without chili, sauerkraut, chopped onions and shredded cheddar.  If you you can pick it up to eat it without ending up wearing it, it's just not done right.

I saw that show too.  I Ching as well as some others have the exact same date for a big event.

Our planet that we call Earth is supposed to wobble and change it's axis.

Supposedly happens every 26,000 years.

My memory is just too short to recall what happened the last time.

No, no, no. You've got it all wrong.

The Earth will morph into a toroid for a few millenia during which we will be bombarded by asteroids. If an asteroid makes it through the toroid, it will get 50 points. If the amount of points given exceeds amount of years we spent as a toroid, the earth will be destroyed by Xenu.

If not, the earth will morph back into the disk it is now, and people at the toroid's outer equator will continue to be at risk of falling over the edge.

Why stop at 2, when you can have 3 dual cores. That's 6 total cores.
