Well I was on my way to Lowes and going a way I usually don't go.  Either way takes me through a bad part of town, but I happened to take the wrong road this time.  I've only done it once before, and the first time was not fun.

There is no possibly way to turn around because the road is so small, and I believe it is too dangerous to stop and take the time to do so.  On this road are a couple dozen low encome houses and apartments.  The problem is though, this road is heavily populated with (by their looks) hardened thugs in their late teens.

Now that we have the background, here is the problem.  They think they own the road, today there were 5 standing in the south bound land (I was going north).  The bad part is roughly 1/4 mile, and I obviously stuck out like a sore thumb.  They just stood in the road and as I drove up (speed limit is 25) I was being stared down and it almost looked like they were trying to stop cars.  Well I did the sensible thing and floored it.  Looking back in my rear view mirror I see southbound cars swerving around these guys, who stood in the same spot.  I did call the police and report it, and it so happened a cop was coming down the road anyway.

I did that in Detroit once.

You know you are in the ghetto when you start seeing places with big signs saying "we accept food stamps"

I'm not gunna lie, I'm starting to get tired of the elitist attitude on this forum... finally.

Not that the story was amazing or anything, but the fact that people go out of their way to make negative comments towards certain members just isn't needed.  If someone other than Carl, Linus, or WGP made a crappy thread, people simply just wouldn't post.

Regarding original thread:

I know places where they do that stand in the road thing and if you slow down enough you can get pulled out of your car through a shattered window.  Continuing on is the safe thing to do.

Classic stereotyping. If you actually take the time to talk to kids like that, they're actually pretty cool and funny. I work with a lot of kids like that, and if I had to make a judgment about them after seeing them walking down a street, I would assume they were thuggish by their appearances and the way they talk. Although, if you get to know them, they're not who they appear to be.

And the whole standing in the street thing is pretty common around here.

No I called the police with concern for their safety.

Not only is it stupid to not move out of the way of cars coming toward you, but it is probably illegal somehow too.  This is a state maintaned road.

I'm at a loss as to how to identify... well... those people.

I say those because, if you think about it, any way to identify somebody as black has been considered offensive.

Negro is an antiquated term on par with calling someone black. When society stopped using Negro and started using "black," the word "black" was considered more offensive. On top of that we've got "colored" and "dark" and probably a few other color-oriented words.

There's also African-American, but some people also hate being called that, citing that some haven't had African ancestry for many generations.

There's nothing that you can refer to that other race that isn't offensive in one way or another. Often they use those words in reference to themselves, specifically Coloured and Negro in some of their organizations. The less well-versed use the slang versions of Negro. These usages all suggest it's not such a big deal for them, but only when they're speaking to those of the same race.

Technically it's not socially acceptable for non-blacks to say Negro, but it's preferable to pretty much every alternative. "Coloured" implies a difference, "black" implies darkness, "African-American" may not be true, and the slang versions of Negro are obviously out of the question. In the romance languages, they are referred to by the languages' versions of Negro.

If they want something non-offensive, they should either tell us what they want to be called or quit being so sensitive about the designations.

To original topic:

To be completely honest, I would probably have gotten along with those guys fine. But then again I don't walk around and try to act black, but I am not really white(if you know what I mean). I know that when I was with my dad at work, these guys that looked like thugs came up to us and my dad was about ready to hit them with his mono pod. Then I was like dad hold on, then they came up and had a very intelligent conversation about different things with me and my dad.

TL/DR
You can't judge people just because of the way they look, and because they are standing in the street.

Before I was familiar with the area, I drove into a REALLY bad area in Detroit. I thought I was going to get shot at or something, especially when I had to go to a gas station and pre-pay with cash.
Even the cops were looking at me strangely despite the guys walking on the sidewalk smoking (what appeared to be) a joint. It was kind of unnerving.

Detroit is odd though.

You can be driving down the nicest business district and ten seconds later on the same street be in the ghetto.
