So as some of you may know I just started a new job. I'm a swamper (driver helper) for the pepsi distributer here. We drive around and stock pepsi stuff all over town. It's just physical labour so its not bad, and it's $16 an hour, which is really helpful since I'm hoping to go to europe in the fall. Now the bad sides:
I start at 6am, meaning I have to get up at 5am. Even if I go to bed at 10pm, its only 7 hours of sleep. Then my day runs an average of 10 hours. Yes, good money, but long days. Also, I get every other weekend off, meaning I work 12 days in a row before I get 2 days off. Now since I have to get up at 5am, I really only get 1 day of those two to go out late, since I need sleep on sunday before I start again.
Now I'm planning to work roughly 12 weeks or so before I leave. That means that this entire summer, I get to be awake past 10pm a grand total of 6 times.
Sucks ass.

Aw and I'll bet that next time you'll be complaining that all your money won't fit in your wallet. Come on man $16.00/h to stop pepsi fridges, that sounds ok to me. Oh and you won't be staying up to 10pm very often. I start work at 6am too, an its more like 9pm. You'll see after 2 weeks.

I just started my new job today working at a concrete factory. I'm making $16 an hour as well and I also start at 6am working 10 hour days. However, I only work Monday through Thursday and if there is an opening I can take overtime on Fridays and Saturdays. I'm actually pretty excited about it.

I'd way prefer that time-wise. I get tons of overtime, but I cant imagine how they could make it mandatory while keeping it legal, while at the same time I cant imagine I could ask for less overtime and keep my job, since it would re-schedule their whole operation. It's worth a try though, I figure if I dont have a choice, I dont have a choice, but I'd love to get an extra day or two off.

Damn, I make 8.80 to mow State Parks / State Fields. I work weekends, and get two days off during the week. but get Free entry to the Newport Jazz Festivals and Folk Festivals. Oh, Its a state job, which means Coffee Breaks. The hours are okay, 7AM to 3:30 PM, so If I really feel like making money I could pick up an evening job busing tables or what ever. The best bit is that I get to drive a huge tractor.

I just got a job with a local gym. It's a joke, but then again, it's only 8 an hour. Of course, in August, when I head off to be a college freshman, I'll be getting a job at Circuit City, which I hear has insane hours. But the money...

I love my job.. 10 per hour, plus 5-10% of the waiter's tips plus 5% of the bar's tips . On an average night (6 hours) including pay, I'll walk out with $85-110 bucks. It's mad chill, my boss is the man, and everyone that works there is mad straight. It's definitely not a sit around job and your moving the whole night but it's not physically demanding. Plus we can usually make our own fun with some "stuff" in between waiting on tables lol. My night... 430 arrive at work, chill 500-900 bring out bread/water, do take out, take orders, make salads and whatnot, run food, possibly do a delivery+wait on a house party, wait on restaurant parties, clean tables, makes drinks, ect 9-close (1030-1130 usually) partake in various "activities", eat, help finish up the last few tables, help roll silverware, setup dining room, divide glasses Closing- leave or chill at the bar if nothing's going on that night

Lunch for two hours.
Yell at some lowly employees about something that wasn't their fault.

Work one night a week, Saturday.
Work 4-10pm
Get $6/hr + 15% (or more if they feel it earned) from the bar.
My work consists of stocking two bars full in the first 2hrs I work. Than just sit around at the bar talking it up with whoever and restocking the bars when they need to. If it gets busy, I can jump in and help do sodas (and maybe do a drink or two on the hush hush).
On bad days I walk out with $30 in check and $30-40 in tips. One average days I'll get out with $80 in tips. One a good day, $120-150 in tips. The restaurant is upgrading over the summer and the bartenders tell me I'm going to be making $150 per bar, meaning $300 per night. I have my fingers crossed.

So THATS what irony smells like.
.....huh.
My summer job will be interesting:
In at 5am. Wander around the building with the rest of the early morning custodial crew checking out the progress of the previous day's construction.
6am: work on some menial tasks for an hour.
7am: Coffee break, wait for the rest of the crew to come in.
7:30: begin real work. For me it'll consist of networking computers, moving equipment, cleaning rooms, or any number of assorted jobs that will crop up.
10:00am: Coffee break.
Work until noon, then its lunch time.
Leave at 1:30pm since I was in at 5.
It won't suck too bad. I'll sacrifice an early morning for the clear afternoon. I could do 7-3:30, but its nice to be home by 2.

Yeah, the next, oh about 6 weeks and probably more, i will be at home doing very little with a broken ankle.
So, im going to TRY to wake up at 10:00am every morning( ), knock out 2 summer reading books with written notes, and read the Economic Naturalist and write a 10 page paper on it and create my own unique question for life... All before/in the first week of July so I can have some of my summer. And I will hopefully be working quite a bit after my ankle heals in July so I can make up for some lost time and buy a newer SUV in the fall/winter.
Id rather be working most of the time...

When we're not at the warehouse, we don't have any downtime except for the time it takes to drive from place to place. We go to the warehouse pretty much just to re-fill the truck when it needs it, or pick up a big order to drop it off. Since I'm not in a very big town, we go to a lot of places every day, and some once a week, once a month, etc, depending on how busy they are. We have to do all the vending machines, as well as re-stock drug stores, grocery stores, gas stations, convenience stores, offices, etc. There IS another truck though, so it's divided up between us.

Choop..... If you were going to be doing route work, you should have signed on with a beer distributorship. Better pay and you get to know EVERY BARTENDER IN TOWN! That translates to free drinks and other perks (including free schwag from the distributorship). |
We DO have our own brewery, but it's a hot target for jobs for pretty much everyone over 19, under 30, so there's pretty much never an opening, and when there is, someone who knows someone, who knows someone usually finds out first.
