Last night while using my 4 year old laptop I started to hear scratching noises. This morning when I went to use it, it tells me that no media was detected and no OS was detected. I assume my hard drive is now destroyed, and the scratching was the hard drive?

Ditto. That bad boy is shot. The sound you heard was the actuator arm scratching the platter, I think. Kind of like a record player with no needle. Records? LMAO, fark I'm gettin' too old.

I could get a new hard drive, but the DVD burner in it is also shot (has been for at least a year), plus the keyboard is missing half a dozen keys, the battery doesn't work, I have to use duct tape to get the charging cord to stay in.
Maybe it's time for a new one.

There seems to be a kitten inside of your labtop.
Please save it.

Yeah, sometimes dust builds up on the arm, and it scratches the platter.
4 years old isn't too bad though. Better than replacing your laptop every year.

If you have any dust getting in your drive the platters will be scratched to death before much will accumulate on the arm.
If you need anything off the drive, it still is very possible to recover some data. PM me if your interested and I can walk you through it.

One piece of dust on the platters will crash the heads. Fun fact.

It can, but it wont necessarily.
When heads start grinding against the platters or get stuck I usually pop off the lid to let them move freely and get the data off. I cant testify that no dust particles get on the platters while their exposed but the heads seldom crash when I do this, and much less so then when I still had them in their enclosure.

Guy I knew crashed his plane last night. Sad, but he's fine.
And no, I don't crash planes.
Darur, there is some stuff I might want to get off if it's not too much trouble, but nothing irreplaceable.

Thousands of people died in one week from natural disasters in the blink of a freaking eye, and I'm supposed to have utmost compassion for a man who got injured while participating in a recreational hobby.

No, not at all. No one is expected to have sympathy for someone they don't know. It is, however, basic human decency to not be an ass about it though.

Human decency is not a reflection upon whom we bestow it upon; it is a reflection upon ourselves.
