Yet again, I have been screwed by the cops.
Driving down to my girlfriend's lake house with her parents in one of their cars and me in the other, we drove the three hours south to Smith Mountain Lake.  On the way there, there was a random sobriety checkpoint.  They said, sir, your registration is out of date, to which I replied, "I had no idea, this is her parent's car".  He said, "It's your responsibility as the driver"...which I say nothing to because I'm appalled.  I'm 17 and he's being a douche.  I had no idea their car wasn't registered.  He gives me a summons...but tells me I can pay the ticket and re-register the vehicle, and if I send proof, I probably won't have to appear in court or anything...THREE HOURS AWAY FROM MY HOME.

Done and paid for as of May 30th.  I get a letter today requesting that I appear in court...on the 29th...**edited** .  My girlfriend's parents paid the fine and re-registered their vehicle.  Why on earth would they send me a summons when everything was taken care of

In short, I loathe both cops, and our horrible court system.
Now I've got another thing to take care of...

most the time i side with the cops, and they are partially right. as the driver of any vehicle you should know where the registration and insurance card is and if its up to date. god forbid there were an accident

however, i wouldn't see a need to go to court, they should've just given you the summons and what not, have you send in proof and send you on your way.

It's not the Cop's fault that you got the summons, that's our discombobulated court system. As for the ticket, he was just doing his job.

I've never had an officer ask to see my license or registration going through a checkpoint; just a hello, how are you, and where are you headed. If you can pull off not sounding drunk, you're free.

If the driver is suspicious, they just tell them to pull over into another lane where you are assaulted by a swarm of cops with unnecessarily bright flashlights and only then will they check papers and test the sobriety if need be.

I just don't think I should go to court; I sent an e-mail to the sheriff's office, and I'll be calling tomorrow.  The only reason I care is because it cuts into beach week...and srsly...a court summons....

Why exactly did you get screwed by the cops?

Why was he being a "douche" for doing his job?

Sounds like just another case of teenage anti-cop angst.

Maybe if some douche bag 17 year old wasnt suckered into driving his girlfriends whore mom's gas guzzling unregistered rig because he thought he was going to get a peice of arse, said cop could have been out doing something more important with his time. Ignorance of the law is exactly that. Ignorance. Grow up.

It's hard to side with either party in most situations (between police and civilians).  Police harassment and brutality are still very alive and well.  However, I just so happen to believe the majority, of any given population, are just as low as the "big bad policeman".

It's not just cops that are on a power trip.  It's everyone these days.

I've been pulled over twice in the past 2 weeks. Once for passing too close to other cars, and once for blowing a stop sign. Both times doing 10 over.

Both times off with a verbal warning.

Yeah, my irritation would be with the owner of the unregistered car, not the police officer.

I went through a sobriety checkpoint a few weeks ago- the cop looked at my registration, my 'VF' plates, and waved me through without even looking in enough to see if I was drunk or not.

I'm so sick of people blaming the cops.

If your driving an unregistered car, its your fault. The cop is doing his job, your not doing your job by keeping your info up to date.

In this particular situation, I would blame the Mother. Its her vehicle and She should have alerted you about whats going on with it.

People are always saying how much they hate cops, yet when these same people are in danger or need help, who do they call?

Fat free donuts?

No, but I also never referred to my girlfriends/wifes mom as a whore. Think about it.

He was being a douche because he knew I lived three hours away and is still trying to force me to come to a ten minute session of court.

Still doing his job. Perhaps, he sensed your completely incredulous attitude and decided to show YOU who is the boss. Sucks having to deal with A-holes doesn't it? Maybe next time show a modicum of respect and he would have let you off.

Now, to clarify, because apparently you can't read, I am getting screwed here because A) I have to make a three hour drive to go to said ten minute court session

Screwed? Let me clarify... YOU WERE WRONG. YOU BROKE THE LAW, YOU PAY THE PRICE.

B) it will take up my whole day when I already did what he asked me to do,

Life isn't always fair. Get used to it. It sucks.

and finally C) because it will make it not possible for me to go to beach week.

That does suck to be you.

It that simple enough for you?

Very. I see very clearly that you are still wrong.

It's not a crappy vehicle pbn00b, it's an 04' dodge ram,

Never said it was. I simply called it a gas guzzling unregistered rig. Wasn't meant as a derogatory statement.

I had no idea it was unregistered, and it was full of things that her parents needed to take to the other house.

Keep telling yourself that.

Honestly, I agree, it pretty much sucks to be you right now. I actually do have some empathy for you. Unfortunately, my dad, who actually is a douche, was a cop for a long time and despite him, I have great respect for police officers. You could have easily stated your veiwpoints without insulting the officer that was simply doing his job. You should see if they offer a ride along program in your area. Spending a shift of two with a police officer will completely change the way you think of them. You will also find that you tend to get what you give when it comes to dealing with them. Again, sorry about your luck, have you tried calling and discussing with the court to see if you are able to get out of it or change the date?

Eh. Sometimes it applies. Sometimes, a little rebellion is justified. It's the descretion that's important. Laws are fundamentally there for our protection, but sometimes they can just be controlling. In this case, he broke the law, and should get into trouble for it. Don't read into that last comment too much. The cop was just there to make the arrest/ticket/transition to the courts. He's not in control of what happens to you after you leave. I agree the courts messed up here. But in cases like cops going out of their way to abuse their power, then a little rebellion may be needed...

Like I said, descretion.

I can't speak for others, but I always make sure the information on my vehicle is kept up to date.  (Yes, not exactly applicable, but I do this because it is my responsibility.)  Regarding the use of other people's vehicles, I don't check their registration and paperwork before driving them.  However, by choosing not to do so, I am making a decision to take a risk. Thus, if the risk turns out badly for me, it is as a consequence of my own choices.  You drove someone else's vehicle after making an erroneous assumption that it was properly registered.  No one forced you to do this, it was your choice.  Granted, it was not a conscious choice as you probably didn't think to yourself that it wasn't necessary to check the paperwork.  However, you made another choice before that which led to the situation, which was to trust your girlfriend's "whore" mom.  (The fact that you refer to her in this manner indicates there may be circumstances which should have led you not to trust her, but that is beside the point at this time.)  Either way it was a bad decision and you get to suffer the consequences.

No?  Didn't think so.  He was being a douche because he knew I lived three hours away and is still trying to force me to come to a ten minute session of court.

The officer probably doesn't have a lot of say in whether or not you go to court.  Either way though, going to court is sometimes part of what happens when you break the law.

Now, to clarify, because apparently you can't read, I am getting screwed here because A) I have to make a three hour drive to go to said ten minute court session

This doesn't have a whole lot to do with the cop either; it's a factor of the jurisdiction you were caught in.  If you'd been caught closer to home, you could probably go to court closer to home.  It's bad luck, but it's not "getting screwed."

B) it will take up my whole day when I already did what he asked me to do,

It sounds like the cop didn't necessarily know what he was talking about when he told you how the ticket would be handled. Unfortunately, this isn't all that uncommon.  If he wasn't positive of the procedures, he should have made no comment on them at all.  As far as it costing you your entire day that comes back to decisions, consequences, and the bad luck to get caught three hours from home.

and finally C) because it will make it not possible for me to go to beach week.

How amazingly, horribly inconvenient.  You will probably be scarred for life.  (/sarcasm)  If this is the worst thing that ever happens to you, count yourself lucky.  Oh, yeah.  One other thing . . . waaaagh!

It that simple enough for you? It's not a crappy vehicle pbn00b, it's an 04' dodge ram, I had no idea it was unregistered, and it was full of things that her parents needed to take to the other house.

Retrospect:

pbnoob- As far as the law is concerned, yes I was in the wrong, but the situation was a little twisted, no?  Called her mom a whore in the moment, I was pretty pissed.
I am definitely not stupid enough, even at 17, to give a cop even a hint of an attitude, and I was as polite with him as I could possibly be.
As I said in the beginning, it's not him really, but the courts.  I e-mailed the sheriff's office, and her parents are getting in contact.
It's really just the point that I did everything and they still want me to appear in court?  Wack. Also PB, my father was an agent for CID in the Army, and has no sympathy for me, so I've grown up around that as well, but I feel like her mom should be taking care of this, especially for not telling me that it was unregistered, and upon going through the checkpoint in front of us, telling the cop the situation.   Kind of dicked me there.

Carl- Do you always try and stir up trouble?  That is why you're annoying, and trust me, when it happens to you, which it just may, you're going to be singing the same tune.  Enjoy being an asshat while you can, because karma  really, really sucks.

Also PB, my father was an agent for CID in the Army, and has no sympathy for me, so I've grown up around that as well, but I feel like her mom should be taking care of this, especially for not telling me that it was unregistered, and upon going through the checkpoint in front of us, telling the cop the situation.   Kind of dicked me there.Carl- Do you always try and stir up trouble?  That is why you're annoying, and trust me, when it happens to you, which it just may, you're going to be singing the same tune.  Enjoy being an asshat while you can, because karma  really, really sucks.

It's funny how you make no attempt to defend yourself besides the LOLIMRIGHTCAUSEISAYSO!!!!!!!

I'm not trying to stir up trouble, you posted a bunch overgeneralized crap and have been unable/unwilling to defend your point.

Carl, I'm more than able to defend myself, but it's a fruitless battle with you.  I'm rather unwilling because an argument with you is a waste of time.

How is the cop a douche?  I'll be honest, I said that in anger, but being as blunt as he was had me thinking he was rather douchey.

Why am I screwed by the cops?  Once again, because I paid the fine, re-registered the vehicle, and just received a summons requiring me to appear in court, for a ten minute waste of my time.

Teenage anti-cop angst?  Anti- our flawed system.  I'm pissed at his remark, though I suppose the vehicle was my responsibility, but the court requiring me to appear in court when it's all been fixed.  I've got angst for that.

And correcting me on a misspelled word is immature, and nothing more than a catalyst, you were just trying to piss me off there.
Truth be told, you have a habit of throwing out some rude or 'playing the devil's advocate' remark in most of the threads you post in.
I don't come to this forum to show off my grammar skills.

I also don't want this thread locked, so let's just move on.

THis is probably not the fault of the cop

Most likely a mistake but how was this the fault oft he cop really?

Had to, maybe that way you would defend your points? How about the hundreds of other forumers that have done the same thing? I didn't see you speaking out then.

So why exactly is arguing with me a waste of time?

Why should we move on? It seems that many other forumers share the same feelings as I do. Or are you just looking for ten pages of pity?

No, but it's nice to vent.

You have one, count them, one thing that you've got me on.  How the cop was being a douche, and how HE as an individual screwed ME.
As I said responding to PB, I'm more pissed at the court, but the cop's "I realize that this situation totally sucks for you, but I'm still giving you a ticket" attitude was pretty douchey.  Again, more of the court's fault.  Nobody else has posted back asking anymore questions about it.  Again, just a rant, you really don't have to keep posting.

And why is it a waste of time?  Because you just don't have anything to add, other than to call me out on spelling, and to call out one faulty point, which I had previously admitted to.  So the next time you use one of your elevenish daily posts, just make an attempt to not make an ass of yourself, or to start anything.

And how was anything I said just generalized?  I was as specific as I could possibly be given the situation.  Honestly, Try and give me a straight response here, it's really annoying trying to argue with you

But your entire point was the cop was being a douche and seemed even more pissed off that you got caught (completely your own fault by the way no matter how you spin it) You have nothing against me when the only point I had on you was the only point you had at all.

The spelling thing was more or less a joke, drop it.

Overgeneralized by the fact that you blamed the cop for pretty much everything.

When have I not given you straight answers?

True, but the interactions between them is amusing to observe.

I hate DUI checkpoints, and the whole Nazi vibe they give off. I also hate the ACLU but for once they did the right thing and challenged DUI checkpoints in my state. They won. it is now unconstitutional for any LEO to have a DUI checkpoint.

Uh.. BS.

Michigan Dept. of State Police v. Sitz (1990), the US Supreme Court found them constitutional.

Now, the STATE constitution is a different thing completely, and 11 states don't allow it, and they are pretty dumb for doing so.

Drunk driving is stupid, and if it takes a DUI checkpoint to save a life, so be it.

How are they Unconstitutional?

There are countless things that are effed up in this country, and that gets pinned.
