Looking to add a CB to my truck. I've already decided on getting a http://www.amazon.com/Cobra-75WXST-Weatherband-CB-Radio/dp/B00005N5WW/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1213808080&sr=8-1 - Cobra 75WXST because of its small size and the ease of mounting it. Now I just need a antenna and a coax to hook it all up.

What are some good brands for antennas and coax cables. I already decided I am going to run a 102" antenna for the best reception/range. All I have left to figure out is which brands to get from.

Required for one of the off road clubs I'm a member of. Makes it easier to communicate on trails with larger groups of people. Plus I completely despise cell phones and when we're out wheeling they are extraordinarily unreliable and not practical.

on the island there are actually signs, saying that police cb channel is 9. right out on the highway...one reason i plan on putting the one i have into my car....when i get one that is.

edit-plus, its got a loudspeaker feature, so if i get whatever it is i would need for that mumbo jumbo to work, that'd be pretty cool, i think. found the cb, brand new in the box in my grandpa's basement. good stuff.

That was probably the most rednecked thing that I have ever heard.

Though I believe it's said: wheelin'

Good job though.

Yes, because anybody who is a member of a huge Off Road club and goes off roading is definitely a redneck.

Keep in mind I said off roading, not mudding. Huge difference.

I was more kidding than anything and I didn't mean that in a negative way at all. (though it is still pretty rednecked)

I would love to do something like that.

I have a CB in my truck, and i have a PA speaker hooked up to it as well, for my antenna I just got one of those magnetic ones from radio shack. Originally I had it mounted onto the top of the cab, but now I have it under my spare tire in the bed.

How exactly do you "wheel" in a two wheel drive?

its fun to ask truckers how to get around traffic jams. they usually are helpful too.

You listen to your spotters and you use your head. Locking diffs and decent A/Ts are also pretty handy. I'm not talking about mudding. I am by no means a fan of mud at all. I'm only wheeling my Taco until next summer, then I will be buying an early 90's Wrangler or 4Runner as a trail rig/project vehicle.

Some 2WD action shots.

All of the above vehicles are all 2wd (and locked, with the exception of the Silver FJC which has an open diff). The Silver and White Taco's have been 4x4 converted (after these pics where taken of course).

Get a Wilson antenna, they are the best that I've tried. And yes, for a truck that goes off road, a cb is a necessity. They are often required for trail rides as many off-road parks lie outside areas with cell phone reception.

A cb is very handy on cross country drives when you are in a hurry. Truck drivers keep each other up to date on where the police are hiding, so having a cb is far better (and cheaper) than buying a radar detector.

I bought a new Jeep Rubicon a few years ago, and I used it quite a bit in the West Texas deserts and canyons. Border Patrol cars, state troopers, and law enforcement helicopters out there are all equipped with cb radios, so if you get stuck or need help, you can use your cb to contact them.

I thought about getting one installed before I head out west, I remember my father having one on his car when I was little. They're pretty neat, but apart from the drive this summer, I don't see myself using one very much so I canned the idea.

i'll ask my dad, he used to tell me stories of getting illegal amplifiers that accidentally cut into radio stations and what not. I can't remember exactly but he ended up having to trash all of his equipment to avoid prosecution. -always sounded like fun to me.

i would ask these http://www.cbradioforum.com/ - guys not the paintballers

Hooking up an amp is a pain. They are not hard to come by, you can get them any day of the week by searching ebay for "10 meter" or "ham" amplifier.

But amps require careful calibration to work properly, and you'll need to have a pro set one up for you. You are much better off getting an out-of-the-box cb tweaked and peaked at a cb shop. A shop can bump the output from the standard 3 or 5 watts up to about 25 watts or so. There are how-to articles on the internet for those who are handy with soldering irons, but a shop will do it for less than $50.

Don't even bother with the really big amps, they require big power, and even semis with multiple commercial batteries have to have larger cables and terminals to keep up with the amp's demand.

Dont diss on CBs. Theyre ungodly helpful on the highway travelling anywhere. Truckers routinely call out speedtraps, wrecks, and other stuff.

I remember driving back from Orlando, all the truckers were talking about a 'parking lot' (CB-speak for a big wreck that turns all the lanes into a standstill) up ahead. So I followed all the trucks off the closest exit, and took a state road around the blocked-up interstate. It was funny, a huge convoy of semis and a few cars and trucks like me bypassing a 4+ hour parking lot.

That is exactly the reason everyone should have one.
