Subject: belt fed 98 custom?

i have idea on how i could possibly design a belt fed conversion kit for the 98 custom. the system would be entirly mechanical and external. it would be easy to install and in theory it will prevent jamming and breakage while being fully automatic. it would have a 200-300 rnd rubber belt to feed paintballs.

however, i dont know if this design is obsolete to tippmanns current products. i know there are accesories that make ammo feeding fast and efficient but i havent ever used them or seen them in use.

the cyclone feeding system is said to feed 15 balls persecond. does anyone know how reliable that information is? or if my idea could be of use?

please give me feedback

The information you quoted on the Cyclone Feed is accurate for the stock system.  Modified ones can do better.

Edited Addition.  While a belt fed system would be interesting from a technical perspective, I doubt it would be that useful realistically.  Hoppers are available which can hold 200-300 rounds or more and they can be reloaded much faster than an ammo belt.  Additionally, spare pods of paint are much easier to carry than spare ammo belts of paint. (Nor would the empty hopper have to swapped out for a full one during play like an ammo belt would.)

I think the idea is kind of neat though and might be marketable for a niche group, I.e. hardcore Milsimers. If you could patent the idea and make it compatible with some sort of replica conversion it might appeal to some.

Would it be similar to the http://www.vintagerex.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?action=viewdb&man=Tippmann - smg-60/68 ?

You might want to look into http://www.getrealpaintball.com/intro_set.html - Get Real Paintball , belt fed markers.

the belt would be similar to the smg-60/68 and could really be any length. so where as you have 200-300 rnd hoppers, it could use rediculously long belts possibly holding 1000rnds or more (of course you would be changing co2 constantly). i said 200-300 rnd belts because i figured thats how many you could fit in a box magazine under the gun while not making it to heavy and akward.

1000 rnd belts would be impractical to use during most games however because it would be heavy and akward if you could even carry it. but maybe as a stationary gun?

idk do you think it would have a market as a novelty gun or a use as a stationary gun?

Aye Monk. I have an AT-85 and it is currently my main woodsball gun. Their magazines are chain fed. The chain has little arms on it that lift the paint out of the magazine.

The problem with a belt/chain system, is that it only takes one misfeed (cog slip) to throw the whole system off.

I always wondered about misfeeds. I really wanted to by an AT a few years back but didnt have the cash on me.

You'd spend more patenting it then you'd see profit.

And the at brand of markers are poorly manufactured in my experiences. You are paying tons of extra money for an entry level quality marker with a magazine.

I guess, I had images of someone going Rambo style with a 50cal or whatever, with belts of paintballs crisscrossing their chest and draped over their arms.

Since it doesn't matter which direction a paintball is pointed when inserted into the gun, I think a belt feed wouldn't be an efficient way to go on a paintball marker.   Take a look at the QLoaders if you want ridiculous feed performance that's faster than any marker can shoot ( http://youtube.com/watch?v=RzcR60gk4j0 - 80+ bps )

theres a video on youtube about something like this. he was firing it full auto on his a-5, loaded the drum on the left side of the gun, and paintballs flew into the gun from the right side of the gun, and he fired full auto continuously. i found it pretty cool at least, but too heavy for paintball being a mechanical drum made of metal that fits on the bottom of an a-5

opsgear has a drum magazine for the bottom of an a-5, but all it does is sit there lookin' pretty, and it can open up to hold a couple 100 round pods. also its just a thin sheet of aluminum welded to the shape of a drum magazine

I like the idea of people paying attention to the last post dates of threads and not bumping posts that are over a year old.
