As I mentioned in another thread, I'm learning a new instrument.
The bagpipe!

My roommate is sure to love this, Tolga already said he enjoys my chanter playing.

It's called the chanter. It's the part that makes the actual tune, the norm is to practice with that for around a year before moving to a full bagpipe. We'll have to see what my instructor thinks though. Of all the instruments I play this is definitely the hardest (trumpet, piano, guitar)

Screw doing it properly, get the full deal and just go for it full force.

Which is what I had planned to do until first of all I realized I don't have $1300 and second I found out it is so difficult to play.

I've never understood the hatred people have towards bagpipes. They are beautiful sounding when played right, it's just when they're slightly out of tune or a not so good piper that they sound horrible.
Here is a relatively easy bagpipe piece that sounds pretty good:

And here is a more complicated piece that sounds even better, the top bands in the world.

I can see someone not liking the music but I think for the post part the hatred of the sound is unfounded.

When my Battalion Landing Team was in Tirane Albania in Operation Silver Wake. We had this Major Dude who would Play the Bag Pipes. I swear that he swore he was cool as hell but to us who had been on watch tired and getting rained on he was the biggest douche bag for playing that thing. We where hoping that the fabled 8 o'clock sniper would shoot a hole in that damn thing.

And on this note, I've decided to hold off on the accordion until I get better at the gee-tar and harmonica.

I think a bagpipe is one instrument that evoke very strong emotions very quickly with their sound/music.
anyone who has been to a funeral with one can probably back me up.

So true, at my Grandpas funeral a few years back I didn't even get watery eyes, the second that bagpipe started my eyes teared up. Thats the odd thing, I love that music, but at the same time it makes you sad.

Rosewood chanter? Don't be cheap, pick up a decent blackwood chanter. Your not going to stop practicing on it when you get a full set. If you don't want to pick up one of those, at least get a decent polypenco chanter, thats what I started on.
What book are you learning out of?

Didn't know what I was buying really. I equated rosewood with a quality guitar wood so I figure it would be good. I'll probably spring for a McCallum practice chanter in a few weeks. The chanter actually sounds good though, it scales fine (at least according to my guitar tuner). I'm going to see what my instructor says before I buy anything else.
I'm lucky I didn't buy a set of cheap paki pipes like I thought I should. I've learned better. I've got enough to spring for a blackwood chanter, but I've decided to save up now so by Christmas I can get a blackwood bagpipe.
