As many of you know, I'm a fan of my pipe (tobacco only, for those that don't know...). For a while now, I've been curious about trying a cigar. I'd like to pick one up and give one a try. Problem is, I know nada about them.

I work at a grocery store, and that's where I'd like to grab it, for the sake of convenience. We've got a decent selection, but it's nothing top-of-the line, so please keep recommendations fairly "low-end."

On that note, I think I recall hearing Romeo y Julietta's aren't that bad.

Thanks!

they arent.  it would help if you told us what your options are.  definitely go with a lighter colored one.  if you have CAO, that wouldnt bea bad choice.

I couldn't remember if I heard the Romeo's were or were not good...

Anyway, I really forgot what the options were. Sorry about that. I guess the best we can do is throw a name out there and hope the store has them.

try weed first...  it prepares you for the more harder drugs, such as cigars...

joking aside, i've heard good things about Cigerellos...  but those are kinda womanly.

CAO Brazillia and Italia
Anything Arturo Fuente
Montecristo and Romeo y julieta are both good choices

Just pick something up in the 2-5 dollar range thats imported and not by an american company like swisher sweets. If you do get something from an american company I recommend a pack of backwoods, they are tasty for a cheap machine made cigarello

So I'm hearing yay and nay on the Romeo y Julietas. I know my store carries those for around $7.

Okay, this may sound kinda dumb, but like I said, I'm not very familiar with cigars. Which end do you cut? The side that goes in your mouth, or the side you light? Or both?

you'll find that the majority of cigars you can purchase at a food mart already have a hole punched in them for convenience.

Romeo Y Julieta's are a decent low-end cigar.

I seriously doubt any grocery store will stock their shelves with Arturo Fuente's.

You can buy swisher sweets very cheap. Also, Grenadiers are probably the highest quality "cheap" cigar. Take a bit of time to smoke the lower end stuff, you'll end up appreciating good cigars more.

I thought romeo y julieta's were cuban, and therefor not found in america? I could very easily be wrong. But yeah, they were my first cigar, it was alright.

there's non-cuban romeos.  same with other brands, such as montecristos.

I suggest finding a cigar shop near you and asking the guy behind the counter.  not only will their prices be cheaper on the cigars you find in the grocery store, you'll learn a lot more and have more choices.  plus, they may have pipe tobacco too, as one of the local shops around me has their own house blends of pipe tobacco.

If you don't know much about cigars, you probably won't be disappointed with a grocery store romeo, but if you do get into them, then chances are you'll realize that it's not that great.

Although, this isn't saying romeos are bad cigars.  It's just that cigar stores will have fresher stock, and they will be taken care of better.

for suggestions off the top of my head, Ashtons are pretty decent light bodied cigars for cheap.  Drew Estate also has some fairly cheap good smokes.

Anything Cuban.

Sucks to be you guys though I suppose. Some of the best cigars in the world come from Cuba.

I've had a Cuban Romeo y Julieta. Maybe I smoked it too fast, or I'm an unseasoned cigar smoker, but it made me nauseous. I've since decided that I hate cigars. If I'm going to smoke tobacco, I'll stick with cigs and my pipe.

Well, I find with a cigar, if you're not accustomed to it, that the contact with the tobacco itself can get you a little ill feeling. The same reason you spit out chewing tobacco soaked saliva. With a cigar, if you get it sloppy wet especially, and swallow like normal, you can get a pretty intense feeling of nausea. Take it easy and you'll be fine.

That was probably it then. I've smoked other cigars before and I've been fine. But that makes sense.

Benji, Cubans are very full bodied cigars, that are very complex in flavor and composure. It isn't something you should rush, and sucking it down too fast will definitely give you a headache or nausea.

If you ever come back around to smoking cigars, buy something with a natural or light wrapper, Medium or Light bodied. Also, keep in mind the Maduro wrappers (dark wrappers) contain more flavor and retain much more oil than the lighter wrappers, thus adding more flavor and are sometimes a bit harsh if you aren't used to them. One I would suggest are Perdomo Lot 23's (Natural wrapper). Fairly cheap to get, they are a decent quality cigar for the price (around $4.50 a stick) and aren't so complex that you don't know what you're tasting.

Actually, I might have to buy a box of Lot 23's online...haven't had one in awhile.

They're not exactly hard to get. A little more pricy, but not hard to get.

Backwoods are what I started out smoking, along with swishers, but they are a pain if they aren't rolled correctly (which most of them aren't) and you end up having to re-light a few times.

Go die.

Thanks for the tips guys. A friend of mine knows where a decent tobacco shop is around here. I'll probably grab a cigar at my store, and if I like it, I'll go to the cigar store to see what's up.

I don't know why there is a huge anti-smoking label on it in this pic, but this is what I regularly smoke:

Hav-A-Tampa Sweets.

Wood tipped, pretty cheap, and way better than anything else in the gas station.

Checked out Black and Milds. They are just pipe tobacco wrapped up into a cigar-shaped package. I figure I'd just smoke my pipe.

So I opted for a $4 Don Tomas (I still think it's funny cuz my first and middle name is Don Thomas). Will report back with opinion!

Edit: Yes, it is almost 1 a.m. here, but I just got off work, and I want to relax. Kthx.

I feel like at least once you should have a Philly Blunt, or some other super low end smoke.  I don't breathe into my lungs because I smoke cigars, but the taste difference between a 20 dollar cigar and a Philly will make you never waste your money on something like a philly ever again.

Just some tips, once you get into the body of the cigar, which is after about the first inch and a half, depending on your length, it should be an inch per hour of smoke time.  And for lighting the cigar, use a torch lighter or a match, those are your best bets.

Happy smoking!

Hay gaiz! Reporting in!

Whoop, I need to slow down then. On that note, so far, not terrible, but I prefer my pipe by a rather fair margin. It may be the quality of a $4 cigar, but I just like the taste and scent of my pipe tobacco a lot more. I may go down to a tobacconist and ask for recommendations, but for now I'll stick to my pipe.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned these yet but monte cristo's are nice. And yes pipe tabacco smells much nicer to me than cigars but smoking cigars is less harsh on your throat in my opinion.

Bump for trial two. Tonight, for my after-work enjoyment, I have purchased a $12 Monte Cristo "Discovery 750 Limitada: Lot 98 Series A." It's basically the creme de la creme of the selection my store offers. I want to see if this "higher quality" cigar is any different. Update to follow! I'll smoke this one a little slower.

And after the Monte Cristo: Meh. Better than the Don Tomas, but not 3x better.

Once again, I smoked it too fast. Bah. Oh well, still not crazy about the flavor. I'll stick to my pipes, methinks.

Edit: WAY too fast. Ugh.

Nope. Didn't occur to me. Well, nauseated speed-smoking aside, I still prefer my pipe tobacky to the cigar. Just an over-all more enjoyable experience in my opinion (once again, this is ignoring the after-effects). That's not to say if offered a cigar I wouldn't take it, but I don't foresee me spending money on another any time soon.

Thanks for the tips, guys!

I smoked an occaisonal cigar for a couple of years when I got to college.  I tried a pipe a few months ago and it was a ton better.  I have smoked good cuban cigars, crappy $1 special cigars, and expensive top of the line cigars and the first smoke on the pipe was better than all of them.  So I don't blame you to stick to the pipe, it is a lot better in my opinion.
