He is now Combat arms.

Those jokes are hilarious. It's just a shame our seemingly non-existant military is STILL spearheading the military efforts in Afghanistan long after the yanks had supported it in any meaningful way.
Now if only any one of us could remember who stirred the hornets nest in that region....hmmmm.....

I think the real highlight there is you're "spearheading" it after it's old news. You guys are doing a real crack job there.

Go pick up a copy of the NY Times, or other reputable paper my friend. In fact, have a free link to their site: www.nytimes.com - www.nytimes.com .
Read any article on Afghanistan for, say, the past week.
They have a common theme: the Pentagon wants to take troops out of Iraq, and put 'em in Afghanistan.
So, maybe you want to recant your comment?
Anyway, Thor, I thought we still outnumbered you guys there?
According to the ISAF article on Wikipedia, you're in a solid 5th place, with Italy, Germany, Britain, and the US well ahead of you (by more than a multiple of 10 total).

While numbers may speak to you. I'd take 1 Canadian Infanteer going on advance to contacts and rooting out the taliban over how ever many hundreds of thousands of air force personnel you want to send.
The only other country that has it as rough as we do is the Brits, cause they are fighting in the helmand province right next to kandahar.
It's all well and good to assume more people means your doing good. But we're leader of the MNB for rebuild and combat. So try actually reading up on before you post.
And rockerdoode. the last thing we speaheaded was Bosnia. And we also helped save your asses in Korea.
When you think about it, aside from WW2 (in which the yanks barely wanted to get involved, until they got schooled in front of the entire world), the yanks haven't done a whole hell of alot except make stupid decisions.
I honestly can't wait until the yank society crumbles and you guys become our mexico. That'll make for a fun shopping day. Maybe I could buy a genuine american piece of crap car made in detroit.

And personnel are personnel; also, if you look at casualty figures, the numbers for the US are drastically larger than for any other outside military force. Maybe 'cause, you know, we do more there?
Also, we've had 2,200 Marines deployed with your 2,500 man force around Kandahar since March.
I was involved with a BF2 mod called Project Reality last year for a couple months, and I met a lot of people who served in the US, UK, and Canadian armed forces, and I have a whole lot of respect for all of them.
But you're talking out of your ass if you think that 2,500 troops are doing as much work as the 32,000 troops we've sent, especially since the vast majority of them are not air force personnel; we've got four times as many soldiers training the Afghan army as you have in the whole country.
My country may make horrible decisions, but we happen to be really good at fighting wars. Ask the 2 million Vietnamese who died in the '60's and '70's.
Also, Canada spent $175 million last year reconstruction aid to Afghanistan; the US spent an average of $7 million a day on reconstruction aid in Afghanistan.
Don't get me wrong; I'm all for help in Afghanistan, I think that if Iraq wasn't a huge distraction for the US, maybe we could get around to doing Afghanistan right. But don't come in here and try to tell me that you're doing it better.

While I certainly am not backing Thor here, you might want to add a notation to your statement. We haven't really mastered the art of war since World War II seeing as how there was no clear victory in Korea or Vietnam. Which brings me to the second point, the statement about America being able to fight wars in references to the Vietnam conflict was humorous. Sheer numbers do not count at all when looking at war. Look how many people the Soviet Union lost but they were still able to technically win World War II. Just because we killed more in Vietnam does not make us good in fighting that war particularly.

I lol'd. If your logic is correct, if I crossed the border into your country and murdered a few servicemen, that would be your country contributing to the conflict. Your men and women dying does not equate to them doing more. It equates to them being killed.

You keep saying "compare compare compare". That's not how the world works: a company with more cash can beat the snot out of a little company.
Same with countries. GDP and population size aren't a factor when you're counting boots on the ground; they never have been, and they never will be. You don't compare which country is larger before the battle, then line up and shoot people based on some statistics.
Granted, our military quality is probably slightly lower at this point, considering some significant percentage of our military is made up of convicted convicts.
Also, 40,000 Canadians fought in Vietnam; 2 million Americans fought there. 103 Canadians died; 58,000 Americans did. That's less than 2% of the Americans who fought there; I believe that both British and Australian commandos trained with Army special forces units in Vietnam as well.
I could be wrong, but I believe Project Reality is still alive and running; I left jst after .8 came out.
*EDIT* Just check their website, and their most recent update was July 5th, so I'm gonna assume you just don't like that content of the mod anymore. To each his own.
If Bush didn't stick his head up his ass and invade Iraq, we could handle Afghanistan just fine. For that matter, if we'd actually supported the pro-America remnants of the mujahadeen in 1989, instead of allowing them to be ousted for the Taliban, we'd never have a 9/11, nor would we have to invade.

I will continue to armchair general until we stop fighting foreign wars, seeing how I'm not dumb enough to actually fight in them.
The US military is not, and has not, been designed for occupation. We're good at killing people, and that's about it.
The US has the largest advanced arms industry in the world supplying it--that is the core of my only point. We're good at making stuff that kills the enemy.
Our reconstruction efforts may be near worthless; but I'm sure I can find you some examples of actual work being done:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/infocus/afghanistan/ - How about here...
http://www.trade.gov/afghanistan/ - here...
http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2008/jun/105770.htm - or here , although this is just the huge bill we footed for it. It works out to $10 million plus, per day.

Congrats, you make new toys. Is this really a point worth arguing? Just so you know. A rifle will always be a rifle, no matter how many neat tricks it can do. And, a bomb will always be a bomb.
Maybe the yanks can be proud of their toys when they actually make warfare easier. But I won't hold my breath.
I'd rather wait until someone invents a phaser. Then, I'll be impressed.
And Ceesman, I really enjoy riding in Armour. All the advance to contacts and "milk runs" we did in the sandbox were out of LAV's and Nyala's...and those are considered tame. I think I will orgasm when the 120 smoothbore goes off.

Pariel: They just bought about 100 leopard 2A6's but I doubt if they have them yet. (could be wrong)
I believe they train on older vehicles though at first.

Rode in Nyala's (or RG32's if you wanna get picky) on Roto 1 in kandahar. Advance to contact just means you stomp around until someone picks a fight.
We have 80 2A6's on contract from germany and the swiss. We train on standard C2's until we can be sent to germany for our leo 2 conversion course
And I think armur will be great. I mean, who wouldn't love a job where your weapon carries you?

You know, I was just kidding...you guys really need to get on that whole "sarcasm" thing. It was pretty obvious I was mocking .357 or Da Hui here.
AMER'CAS #1!!!
edit: I just wanted to apologize if I pissed off anyone with my sarcasm here...I kinda realize armed forces aren't something you should give someone crap about. I'd also like to take the chance to say I don't hate Canadians. Just the Asian ones.

Wow, this is one of the dumbest arguments on the forum right now. Of course America has put more resources into Iraq and Afghanistan, we started the war! However, this doesn't mean that the Canadians or any of the other coalition forces aren't doing their part and it's extremely unfair and disrespectful to say otherwise. It's true that the US military is disturbingly efficient when it comes to kicking butt and taking names but that doesn't mean our allies are all pushovers. Canada has supported us in probably every major conflict and they didn't send over cheerleaders, they sent quality troops that made a significant contribution. In any case, we're allies and this is OUR war, not theirs. If they contribute less money or troops, so what? They have less resources and it's not their war, they're just supporting us. Be grateful for what they give and leave it at that.

I didn't know you were in afghanistan.
So direct fire then? I thought you didn't get chosen until later in training or is that only for officers?

The argument was in response to this:

Those jokes are hilarious. It's just a shame our seemingly non-existant military is STILL spearheading the military efforts in Afghanistan long after the yanks had supported it in any meaningful way. |
Which was blatantly untrue.
I think we can agree to get back on subject though.
So, will you be deployed sometime after training Thor?

Hopefully, I want a second Roto in the sandbox before it comes to a close. I don't want to carry on the rest of my career knowing I missed a combat tour cause of bad timing and someone screwing me out of it years earlier.
And yeah, apparently I am already course loaded for direct fire.
I will be heading to germany for direct fire combat training after christmas vacation this year.
And the tempo around here means that I should be deployed sometime in 09/2010. Should be a blast.
Coincidentally enough, today I found the PAM's and training plans and tests for the course I am going on. Top student, here I come.
Wouldn't it be great if that actually meant anything?

So you'll be doing training in Leopard 1's (C2's is what Canada calls them, I think you said before) though, before you head over to Germany?
I don't really know how it works; will you be in a specific position? I think there's 3 enlisted in a Leopard right? Gunner, driver...radio operator? I'm assuming that you'll be trained on all three positions to the extent of being able to carry out someone else's job, but will you be specifically training for one position?

All specific training comes from OJT. And the third position is crew commander.
We always need to know everyone else's job in order to have complete versatility for all troops.
