Subject: Which Tippmann for Me?
Date Posted: 17 July 2008 at 12:46am
I have been paintballing in a arena by my house for a while now renting a marker each time. I love it so much that I have decided to buy my own gun. All my friends recommend Tippmann though I don't know what gun to get. Price is not to much of a deal due to life savings but i would like to keep it under $300. I would also like it to be semi automatic. I have been looking at the A-5 but it seems like its short in length along with the barrel. Any advice on which gun to buy?

since said above sir isn't being very "helpful", i will. the a5 is short when you get it, but you can get a longer barrel, get a stock, and make it look like a real gun, if your into the whole milsim thing

it may look shorter, but u can get modifications like longer barrel.  the main reason to buy tippmanns.  i only have 5 games under my belt.  but if i knew now what i did 5 games ago, i woulda jus bought one of those suped up speedball guns.  ive put close to 500 towards my marker right now.   vs buying a 500 dollar marker right off that bat

What about the Custom Pro? Seems like a pretty sick marker and comes stock with a 11" barrel.

In my opinion, the model 98 / 98 custom / custom pro is probably one of the best beginner platforms in paintball today. you can find them for dirt cheap, in several different versions. they're easy to work on, easy to mod, and most importantly, they're dang near bullet proof.

I do it fast, slow, hard, and easy. I sometimes even do it in the woods. Yeah, I'm a runner.

Agreed.  The A5 is also a good option to start with.  I originally had a 98 and moved to an a5 shortly after. it depends on the way you want to play.  Both are extremely tough and good markers.  No matter what though save some cash on the side for a new barrel.  the stock barrels on tippmann's are infamous for being horrible and i had the same experience.  if you have played with either of them and like the feel of that one go with that.  if not go to a pro shop and at least hold the marker before you buy it.  get a feel for what it will feel like in your habds.  I prefer the feel of the A5 but many others prefer the feel of the 98 or even x7.  internally tippmann's are extremely similar so no matter what you get you are getting basically the same internals (not quite the same but close enough).  Make sure you save enough for a tank and a mask though. on the mask you might as well get a decent one that wont fog up now so you dont waste money and then have to go get another one. As for the barrel (as mentioned above) put 30 bucks aside and go get either a J&J or a Lapco.  I prefer J&J just for the design but both are extremely accurate and very well made.

I'd say just buy the type of gun you usually rent. You'd already be familiar with it and if you needed anything done with it, they could probably help you out at the field you go to.

I would suggest a non-tippmann marker. Many manufacturers can be found in the same price range new, or used that offer a marker that is lighter, has greater consistency, more features, and just as reliable.

Smart Parts Ions, Vibes, and SP-1
Mini's
ICD Promasters
Older Angels, Intimidators, etc.

2005 Freestyle
Naughty Dawg Freestyle
Angel LCD
SP-8
Tippmann 98 Custom

If you are thinking about the custom pro just because it has a longer barrel I would just get the regular 98 custom and upgrade your barrel because normally Tippmann stock barrels are crap.

i consider tippmann marker to but the ak47 of paintball,

you can throw them in water or dirt and still work, but do not offer as much of accuracy or perfermance as a m16/m4,

but a m4/m16 needs to be take care of, no jumping in water or fulling it with dirt while you can do that to an ak,

in the end it all comes down to what you want, if you want semi automatic, i dont see the point to go to speedball marquer seems they seems to all be electronic or havedouble trigger to make it shoot real fast

depend on what you like and what's your play style

for me tippmann was right since first game i played with my marquer i fall into a creek and was all wet with mud and still shoot fine, (love the ak love the ak!!!)

The Custom Pro is a very nice marker, and I believe it will save you a few dollars in the long run.  It comes stock with a double trigger, and a little bit better barrel.  For woodsball, it's the way to go.

I'd stray away from the higher end electros while you're new.  Although it's fun to look at them and pwn n00bs wit teh ub3r and whatnot, but you need to learn the basics first.  Not to mention, a full-electro set-up that you would be content with would be close to your budget.

Their price will just drop more as time goes by.  You'll always have the option to upgrade to a better quality marker.

Gentlepeople,I am looking for a marker, not to play, but to use in personal defense

I currently carry a .45 and a 12Ga and a AR15 but these are not socially acceptable to use against gangs of children ages 10 to 12 years, called "piranhas",which act as the like named predatory fish in the Amazon, and are VERY dangerous, but the judge will send you to jail if you blast them! I called Tippmann and they send me over to "PepperBall", they, quoted a Tippmann at US$1,500.oo!!!,very similar to the one,I can buy at WalMart under $300.oo!! but shoots pepperballs at around 400fps,people I Know, have used normal paintballs at 280 to 320 fps, with VERY BAD results for them!Any suggestions?

Suggestion:  Go somewhere else.  Tippmann paintball markers (in fact, all paintball markers) are sporting equipment, not self-defense weapons.  The usage you are requesting information about is improper/unsafe use of such equipment and as such will most likely result in the closure of this specific discussion.
