Tomorrow I am joining, the Air Force Guard. My MOS will be security forces aka MP ( Military Police). Hopefully I will be going too BT in a few months.
P.S. I hope the forumers who are soldiers and marines will get a laugh at the title of the thread.

Congrats man, I heard they were increasing the USAF BT to 9 weeks now.
But why go guard? Anything against active?
I'm in the Army, and hate it, but I'm allowed to surf everyday so I'm not complaining.

My uncle was an MP, although that was during the Vietnam era.

In a lot of ways this is true, but I got more competent medical
treatment from the few Army doctors I dealt with than all of the AF
doctors I saw during my career.

Frustrating would be a better word. Many of the career fields in the
AF which are not directly related to the base mission (missiles,
aircraft, etc.) seem to not realize that they are actually in the
military.
Additionally, SF tend to get shafted a lot.
- Example one: Major inspections. SF get exercised/inspected more
during the six months leading up to the inspection and during the
inspection than just about anyone else. (This equates to more time
off.) The base does really good and everyone else gets down-days; SF,
being mission essential, don't.
- Example two: Base I was at in the early '80s was getting ready
to upgrade the Vietnam era body armor we were using. Then they
transfered the funds to the aircraft squadrons to buy leather jackets
for the aircrews.
- Example three: A DUI is essentially a career ending experience
for most personnel. When the base commander gets caught doing it, it
is a career ending experience for the unlucky gate guard that caught
him.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the job for the 23+ years I did it. (If
I hadn't screwed up my back, I would probably just now be getting ready
to retire.) It can, however, be frustrating.

In some ways, yes. In other ways not so bad. The SF (haven't been
"SPs" for quite a few years) have about the best camaraderie/unit
cohesion of any career field. The nature of the job allows the NCOs
and Senior NCOs more latitude/freedom from oversight than is possible
in most career fields and most of the time you aren't stuck in some
office all day.
Of course, there are possible downsides to all this: You have to try
to take care of your troops without allowing yourself to get to close
to any of them so improper relationships don't develop. The extra
latitude that is given comes with significant extra responsibility and
a wrong decision can end a career. Finally, sometimes being outside
isn't all that nice.
Anyway, good luck. Keep your mouth shut and your ears open in basic and tech school.

Not so much medical or dental treatment, but the way you are treated overall, as an individual. The quality of life is much higher than other branches.
