I know these are common, but I'm wondering what you are paying.

I'm paying anywhere between 3.83-3.95 a gallon. If I jump the border to PA its around 4.20.

/in before 4/20

They've gone down a bit here. Last night I saw $3.77. This morning was $3.89 when I put some in my tank.

edit- I'm around Cleveland, Ohio.

According to gasbuddy.com, Ohio has some of the lowest prices in the country for some reason.

I paid $1.449 a litre on thursday in town...so that's $5.49 a gallon.

Then I drove to Dawson and filled up there, at $1.747 a litre, so $6.61 a gallon.

Sure it does...
Though speculation, demand from other countries, and a weak US dollar certainly are affecting prices more than anything, there is no denying that increasing production and refining capabilities would drive prices significantly lower (if only for the time being).

No, that simply isn't the issue. It's been discussed time and time again, and current production is higher than ever before. Besides, lowering prices just furthers our dependence on oil. As much as I'd like to pay less at the pumps, I'd much rather see continued development in the areas of electric cars and such.

QFT choop, but how long would it take to get electric or hydrogen fueled cars out on the road and practical to purchase? If it's over 10 years, we need to create some more refineries, or gas will be 10 bucks a gallon before an alternative energy fueled car is out on the market.

And what do people who don't have $60k to buy a new car do in the meantime?
Even if every new car sold from 2010 on was powered by an alternative fuel, there are still millions of people who will be driving gas-powered vehicles. It will take years for these new technologies to be affordable enough for the majority of people to own them.
$5+ gasoline has the potential to send our economy down the crapper for the next 10-15 years unless something is done in the interim to reduce the cost of gasoline, and most especially diesel.

This man speaks the truth.

Not to mention that not everyone can drive small cars due to jobs, and even electric cars have a small gasoline generator(which burns little gas, but still).

If the gas prices keep raising, people trying to save for a new energy car will have to spend their savings on gas. What are people going to do when machines take over everyones' jobs? More people will be out of work, therefore less money to buy other stuff.

No, but lots of people do. And some will trade in, etc. No, not everyone will be able to drive an alternative-power vehicle, and that's fine. Supply and demand. Less people drive the gas powered vehicles, it's not such a hot commodity and (in theory) prices should go down. Solving one problem solves both problems.

I predict that within five years from today, there will be a variety of electric cars available to purchase in the full price range of vehicles.  Not just 100k sports cars and BMWs, but regular-priced compacts and family sedans as well.  There will be different varities of the technology, but cars propelled by electric motors they will be.

Five years.  That's the answer.  Write it down, and check back here in five to congratulate me on my awesome powers of prediction.

Many vehicles will be launched within 3 years.  Within 5 years it will no longer be early adopter territory, and an electric car will be an honest and legitimate option for all new car buyers.

The majority of our electricity in the US comes from burning fossil fuels.

True, but, rather than the plants AND the cars using fossil fuels, its just at the production end and not so much at the consumer end.

Electric or even any other alternative energy sources will slash the consumption levels of fossil fuels significantly, which can't hurt. Who knows, maybe the transition will inspire power plants and such to find alternatives themselves.

On a gas price note, prices here fell 9 cents overnight about three days ago, and It won't go down any more. The two gas stations in town are the only ones on the main artery that runs by for almost 20 miles in either direction, so they usually charge the high end of the spectrum and hang there long enough so that when they DO change, its not 2 or 3 cents at a time, its a drastic shift, usually in a bad direction.

I had a dream last night that I went to get gas and the price was $31.75 a gallon.

Gas has dropped from $4.49 a month ago back down to $3.99 where I work.

Anyone get the feeling they're trying to hit us with sticker-shock, then slightly reduce prices so it doesn't get us too angry when it bounces back up towards $5?

We need more nuclear power plants.

Yes and no.

Yes, the electricity has to come from somewhere.  In the US, our electricity generation is roughly 50% coal, 20% nuclear, 15ish% diesel/gas, and the remainder hydro/wind/solar.

But those are centralized plants.  They are vastly more efficient than small decentralized power plants in cars.  This means that the net energy usage for electric cars is drastically less than gasoline-powered cars.

The Tesla Roadster, for instance, gets the equivalent of roughly 235 mpg.  Granted that the Tesla is a small car, but the most similar gas-powered car is the Lotus Elise, which gets 25-30 mpg.  The extrapolation will not hold, but it is not unreasonable to figure that converting our entire fleet to electric would result in at least an 80% reduction in energy use for cars.

And then there is pollution.  Cars are very polluting.  Power plants have far greater pollution control than cars.  Even the dirtiest coal plant in the US releases significantly less CO2 and particulate pollution per kWh than even the cleanest gasoline/diesel car.

So, no, switching to electric will not do away with pollution or fossil fuels, but it will be a massive step in the right direction.

Wow, they dropped quite a bit.  Yesterday it was $3.66 at a gas station further away.  I didnt feel like driving to it, so I drove like, less than a mile round trip to get gas at $3.75
