I've got my new computer built, but I need to transfer about 100 gigs from the old computer to the new one. What is the best method?
I had a few ideas:
Through my network (very slow) Put the old HD in the new computer temporarily to transfer the files

I believe that you can do it through usb.

The big question is what will be the fastest way. I need to get this done within a week. The new HDD has a 3 Gb/s interface (whatever that is supposed to mean). But my old HDD is more than 5 years old so it is bound to be a lot slower.

Just e-mail it to yourself.

I'd probably just connect both computers to your router, create a folder with all the files to be transferred, enable network sharing on said folder, then go Start>Run>\\COMPUTERNAME HERE on the new PC, then copy the files over that way. Depending on your setup, file transfer over a LAN tends to go hella fast, usually at least a few Mb/sec. Just let it go overnight, and you should be good.
edit- Just re-read your OP. What kind of network do you have? If it's wireless, it will be slow, but if it's hardwired, it should go fast.

I can hook it up hardwired. Putting it all in one folder will also help in that I can scan it for viruses all at once. I know for a fact my old computer is diseased, how much of a risk is it tranfering stuff through the network?
I'm mostly transferring games, music, and documents.

As long as whatever virus you have didn't come from the files to be copied, I'm going to say you're probably going to be safe transferring them.

Just make sure you have virus protection software on the good computer that you trust.

can you put the old harddrive in te new computer? just make sure it isn't a bootable drive. Then turn on the new computer and transfer anything you need.
