So I am surfing an earthquake at the moment while typing this and holding my monitor so it doesn't fall of the desk.
You heard it heard first.

It was a 5.8.

Anything break or was it not that big?

Living in the Midwest, I really can't fathom what an earthquake must be like. I imagine it would be pretty terrifying.

It was a decent size but since I live within 20 miles of the San Andres fault line we expect this to happen and plan accordingly.
You go up and down more so than shake. From where I am it wast too bad. Nothing fell but while holding the computer monitor I was thinking about steadying the computer. Priorities, right?

Now I'm curious. Is there any place on the planet that's not threatened at some point in the year with a massively destructive force of nature? Tornado, hurricane, earthquake, volcano...

Im in California right now and I just felt it too. My desk which is like attached to the bookcase and probably weighs about 500 pounds started to shake and I wondered how I could have hit it that hard with my leg lol. ANd then it hit me...it was an earthquake. I made a beeline for our grandfather clock, I didnt want the weights inside to shatter the glass. It was pretty cool though

That's one thing I've always wanted to do. Just get out in the middle of an open field during a massive earthquake.

Right where I live in Ontario.
I don't know of any major natural disaster that occurs every year here.
Our last major hurricane was in 1954. I can't remember hearing of any major earthquake. We get a tornado once a year or so but it never does any real damage. Certainly no volcanoes.

We had one here in Michigan a few months back. It woke me up, scared the hell out of me, I wake up in bed shaking, thinking holy crap am I have a seizure right now or something ? I couldn't control the shaking. GTo to school, sitting at a table with some friends and ones like so did anyone feel the earthquake ? I'm like you're kidding right ? He's like no. It was freaky since I didn't know what the hell was happening to me. But afterwards it kind of seemed neat.
De Trev, I too share the dream of want to be out in an open field during a HUGE earthquake. Seems like it'd be awesome.

Australia is in the middle of a tectonic plate, so theres no Volcanos, and as far as I know very few earthquakes.

Well, if its any consolation, the New Madrid Fault should give you folks a 6.0 quake by 2040.
Biggest quake I ever felt was the one that hit Hawaii back in 2006 which was a 6.7.

Doesn't matter if it's not on a fault or not. The Hawaiian island chain isn't on a fault line either, but as everyone knows have some of the most active volcanos on the planet. They can occur at "hot spots" where the crust is weaker that allows a plume to rise to the surface until it breaks through the earth's curst.
In other news, I was awoken by an earthquake...two mornings ago I wanna say? It was about 3AM and I groggily woke to my bed shaking and it helped to put me back to sleep. They happen quite a bit here in WA. I'm just waiting for Mt. Raineer to wake up and blow us all to hell.

I thought Wisconsin was already considered a destructive force of nature.
