Sunday I was playing some roller hockey and I took a spill and scrapped up my knees.  Well every day since then, my right knee has been hurting more and more.  Its not like a bruise where it hurts to touch it.

It hurts to bend it.  I can walk around fine, but I can't go up stairs or sit down in a chair, my leg has to stay fairly straight.  It feels like theres pressure around my knee cap when I go to bend it, and it does feel a bit swollen.

I just put some ice on it.  Anyone have any idea if I may have done something a bit serious?  If it doesn't get any better, I'll probably have it looked at on Friday.

It'll probably get better if you whine about it a little more.

I seatbelt checked a friend in the backseat. Made him hit my center console or something. He was complaining about it and how it was his clutch knee.

As for you, suck it up.

I seat belt check if someone doesn't have theirs on.  Usually gets the point across the first time.

I don't start my car if people don't put their seatbelts on.

Then I punch 'em in the balls.

then rub some dirt on it.

but seriously, my athletic trainer's advice in high school was always "ice and stretch". Broken bone? Ice and stretch. sprained ankle? ice and stretch. decapitated head? re-attach, then ice and stretch. 30 minutes on, 30 off, repeat as necessary. works like a charm.

I do it fast, slow, hard, and easy. I sometimes even do it in the woods. Yeah, I'm a runner.

Screw you guys, this is annoying to not be able to move around unless my leg is straight.  The ice seemed to work to numb it, I could still feel the pressure, but as soon as I got rid of the ice, a few minutes later it would hurt again.

Tendinitis of the Patella tendon.

Did you hear a pop?
It's pretty easy to tear a ligament (ACL, MCL).

Can you actually NOT move it in one direction?

If your still walking, it's probably not that bad. I broke my ankle in May,
and I'm still in therapy. I haven't played paintball in 6 months and had to
drop out of 2 baseball leagues. If I'm in shoes or up and around for over
two hours, my ankle swells up big time.

Suck it up. I waited like 5 hours at home and ate dinner before going to
the hospital for my ankle.

Most likely nothing wrong with you...deal with it.

I've hurt my knee playing paintball on one Sunday and it hurt like hell until like friday. Then I was good.

Give it a while and see how it is. Or, if you have insurance, go see a doctor and get some meds.

Back in my junior year of HS, the week before playoffs we were doing tackling drills and the player I tackled stepped on my knee with metal tipped cleats... ended up being able to see the actual bone/cartiledge.

Fast forward 2 years, and it got re-injured in boot camp. I can't walk without it hurting, and it randomly pops itself. I can go through the pain and can still run, but it's still there and the doctors said it's only going to get worse.

Knee injuries suck, if you have insurance it may be worth having it looked at. Chances are, it what they call a "dashboard injury", you probably smashed the back side of your patella and may have stressed the bone or just dented the cartilage. Either will cause swelling and loss of range of motion. Icing is good if it's a fresh injury, it will keep it from swelling. After a while, you will want a hot compress to speed up the circulation  and get the swelling down, which is most likely the cause of your loss of motion. You should try to stretch, and if at all possible, do not favor the knee. If your muscles atrophy from favoring it, it will just make matters worse. Chances are if it's a minor ligament tear they will blast it with an ultrasound to make the swelling go down faster and give you a few exercises to strengthen stabilizing muscles and improve reaction time so you don't injure it again. Chances are it will never be the same. That's how knee injuries are. The human knee, along with the sinuses are my major points of argument against intelligent design.

I didn't hear a pop or anything at all.  I iced it again, and this time it did nothing.  Someone told me that an ACL tear would hurt terribly, but if I wear to actually have my ACL tear into 2 parts, it wouldn't hurt that much, and that I may have done that.

I'll have it checked out Friday if it doesn't improve.

then its most likely not an acl tear. my brother tore his playin street hockey and he said he heard/felt it pop

i always thought tendon tears came from over working them rather than just bludgeoning them against concrete.  its probably just bruised.

have you tried asprin????? you probably just sprained it or something.... i went through 4 years of knee injuries.  whether it was from hitting it wrong, twisting is wrong, jamming it or from swelling from Osgood-Schlatters Disease, asprin helped... so did not talking about it and making other people hurt when i cross faced them... did i mention this was high school wrestling?

You would have heard a pop. You would barely be able to move your leg if you tore your ACL in half.

You probably bruised something real good down there. Pretty easy to damage a bunch of tendons, as they run all around your knee.

Woke up this morning and my legs mobility seems a bit more limited.  But I tried actually lifting my leg with my hands and that didn't seem to hurt at all.  So it seems like I can move it pretty good as long as my muscles don't have to do any work...

EDIT:  After walking around a bit more, it seems actually better, I can at least go up/down stairs normally now and lift it higher.

Tendon injury, most likely.

Does it hurt in a specific spot? Middle of the kneecap, outside of the knee, inside of the knee? If it's a tendon injury, it's quite likely to be just one, and location on the knee makes it pretty easy to find out which one.

Seems like the top of the knee cap.  Its not too bad anymore.  The height of the pain/pressure feeling comes at the half way point of me bending my leg and then it subsides.

A torn meniscus is also a possibility. That's the little bit of cartilage inside your knee. I tore my MCL (not in half, but a severe sprain with some tearing) got the dashboard injury on my patella and tore my meniscus in highschool playing paintball. Physical therapy seemed to help strengthen the area around the MCL, bootcamp seemed to re-grind the cartilage on the back of my knee so bending it became less annoying. Now it just aches a little when the weather is about to change and sometimes makes crunching noises on the stairs.

After the initial injury it took a few days to swell up pretty good and for me to lose mobility. Try to keep moving it, and take asprin/ibuprophen. Maybe get yourself some Dr. Scholls shoe inserts to keep from beating it to death. Give it a week or so and if it doesn't improve call the doctor, but start taking care of you knees better. These things tend to reoccur and never be the same again.

i kinda had the same thing happen to me. i hurt my knee in softball and just tried to ice it and kept moving it. it was still swollen and thubbing... so i still iced it, took some pills, and etc. 3 months later i broke down and went to the doctor and it turns out that i had ripped my mensicus and i have to have orthscopic surgery.

i say give it a couple more weeks then have it looked at. do not be stubborn like me and wait for 3 freakin months.
