Subject: Got my deployment date
Date Posted: 20 August 2008 at 7:31pm

I just wanted to let those of you whore care know that I finally got my deployment date for Afghanistan. I'll be heading out on September 22nd, coming back sometime late winter or early spring.

A few of the guys here have me on facebook, and SuperXero (if he's ever still around) is a member of my home regiment, so if there's any word to be passed on about how I'm doing you'll know. I'll probably have some internet access over there, but not much time to make use of it. I'll try to pop in from time to time, though I'll probably be even more of a stranger than I've been for the past few months.

I'm just relieved to finally know when I go and be able to make plans. It's been a bloody long year preparing for this.

Anyway, there you go.

In before GL,HF,DD.

Not sure what the regulations are for Canadian Military regarding alcohol in combat zones, but stay on the straight and narrow while you're there. Too many times I hear of people getting NJP'd for alcohol related incidents over there, and they aren't even supposed to have it as far as U.S. military is concerned.

But you're a pretty smart guy so I'm sure you'll be fine.

It will be an exciting and new experience for you...Take every opportunity you can while you're over there, whether it be watch/weapons qualifications, courses, extra curricular activities, etc. You might as well take advantage of what is offered, you definitely deserve it.

Thanks guys. I'll do my best to make sure I get back safe and sound.

Thor: Roto 6, the Third Herd tour. Finding you on facebook was a PITA. The stopover should be as per normal, but with the new airlift that may have been changed. I'll find out when I get to Trenton, I guess.

Chewp: I'll try to find something cool. Maybe a strange hat or some such; there should be no shortage of amusing stuff. At some point I'll try to send some weird and wonderful randomness over that you can distribute in a forum contest or some such. I'll try to enlist someone here from the states for a similar purpose.

Frenzy: Dry theatre. I'd never screw around with booze in a place like that. Too much riding on it.

Savior: Canada doesn't transit through Kuwait, sorry.

Ilford: I expect you to be in already by the time I'm back. Carpe diem, dude.

So yeah, on another note I found out today I'll be one of my platoon's M203 grenadiers as well. We got to fire a fair bit of that today. I absolutely am in love with that thing, though my rifle is now so front heavy it's almost ridiculous.

I did. Direct hit with the first shot at about 225 metres. The only trouble with firing it prone is actually seeing your target.

No, you can't part it out and mail it to Switzerland.  The swiss won't allow that.

Do you know how many stupid soldiers were busted after the first desert storm for trying that crap? Some even cut open an air compressor tank and filled it with AK's before shipping home. Kansas and levenworth are both to be avoided.

Levenworth doesn't even look like fun from the outside; wouldn't want to see it from a prisoner's point of view.

Although, I'm fairly certain that the Canadians don't send their military prisoners there.

No, we have something equally crappy.

No way I'm gonna do something stupid like try to smuggle weapons back. There's enough cool stuff I can send back legally.

Though a deactivated AK would be neat if I could get a weapons tech to hook me up...

Actually the Detention Barracks in Edmonton (or lovingly called Club Ed) is a veritable hell on earth.

Where every day you must wake up, spout out the standing fire orders, name, inmate number, and formal charge against you. Then you get inspection (where you will have gotten a freshly bought tin of boot polish scraped and polished, as well as your human waste bucket). It's off to chores all day until bed time.

You are granted 8 points a day. Points are deducted for poor behaviour. By poor behaviour, they mean if you speak at any time during the day, do "poorly" on inspection, fudge your morning recital, or if they just plain don't like you.

You must accumulate 20 points before you are allocated 1x 5 minute smoke break and 60 points before you are allowed to speak unless answering a question to the staff.

Since you would fall under the National Defense Act, you do not get the basic human rights that civilian inmates do. That means, if you act out, you can be put on bread and water (with supplements) and put in the hole for as long as they see fit.

There are many other aspects to being held in DB, but you get the gist of it now.

Anyone know the ins and outs of American military prisons in comparison?

Prison hierarchy according to some of the prisoners I dealt with while doing a brief stint in a corrections-related career field:

  • Military prisons suck.
    • Mirimar Naval Prison is the worst.
  • Federal prisons are no fun.  (It isn't even really hard time if it isn't a Federal Prison.
  • State Prisons vary from state to state but are generally considered easy time.
  • County detention centers are generally a joke.
