im set up on my way to being a hole technician for the department of the navy.

1st week was all intro. the most important question i had no one could answer... why do they paint the bottom of the subs red?

Well, I figure it's a cost thing. Red Paint, being a cheap primary color to produce, is probably very inexpensive. No one is going to see the bottom of the hull unless it's in dry-dock, so it's not as if it's a tactical or strategic issue.

It's a physics question.  Water tends to disperse red light, meaning, once you get below a certain depth, no red light filters through, so anything that is colored red cannot reflect the red light that isn't there, so it appears black, as it absorbs the other wavelengths in the spectrum.  It's probably a camouflage thing, much as a lobster is colored red.

It's red because it's a type of copper based paint. Barnacles and other marine life cannot grown on copper, which is why the bottom of ships are also "red".

Red contains the largest percentage of copper as opposed to blue and green, so it's stronger.

It's called "anti-fouling paint"

I dunno if you've ever seen a live lobster, but they aren't red. Only when you cook 'em. TRUST ME.

I had a physics teacher tell me that one.  Upon inspection of various lobster pictures on the internet, they seem to be a dark dark reddish color, that almost appears black.

Wikipedia states they can also be green, blue, and various other colors.

The answer is quite simple, the bottom is red so that if the sub flips over you see the red and go hey ! That subs upside down !

Alot of people in my basic were discharged because of "asthma" too.  That's the easiest one to get out with.  Just claim asthma and fail all your breathing test.  I have mild asthma too, and was issued an inhaler.  I'm not saying he didn't have it, but that's often a cop out.
