Mother of Gawd. Doc gets furrier and furrier each day...

Have you ever thought about what kind of pictures he draws his characters in that he doesn't post on the intertubez? He kinda scares me. Check out his latest few "works."

People read Web comics about paintball?

Posted By: DeTrevni
Date Posted: 27 August 2008 at 1:42pm

I started a long time ago. Now it's just on my list of webcomics that amuse me enough to check the updates. Besides. I see nothing wrong with paintball webcomics. Especially ones with neckid female humanoid snow leopards and foxes.

It starts a few days back, so hit "previous" a few times. However, the latest comic should have non-followers going "Dubya tee eff, mate?"

Edit: If this constitutes as "not forum appropriate," I'll delete it.

-Virtually none at all. I have a few very rough sketches, typically showing how I wanted a particular gag or scene to look (usually when the action is heavily exaggerated- somebody getting hit with a mallet, etc.) but that's pretty much it.

There's also a lot of sketches I did for fans, in the backs of the various books- I've ended up using quite a few of these as "filler" strips: like http://www.the-whiteboard.com/auto851filler.gif - this , http://www.the-whiteboard.com/auto752filler.gif - this and http://www.the-whiteboard.com/autobunny.gif - this .

Basically, with very few exceptions, if it's not posted on TWB somewhere, I haven't drawn it. I barely have the free time to draw the strip itself as it is.

-I've lurked a lot of places. But this thread I saw in my page stats. :D

E-mail me your address, I'll be happy to send you some stickers.

Quote ha i wonder if detrevni feels like an ass now

-Wasn't my intention to put anyone down, I just thought I'd clear the air a bit. It actually sounds like Det is something of a fan.

Sad fact is, the "furry" genre` does indeed have some... baggage associated with it. Had I known just how bad it was, or how bad it's gotten, I probably wouldn't have used 'anthro' characters in the first place...

Unfortunately, it seems that, if you draw a "furry" character, some people just assume you're a capital-F Furry. I'm regularly asked if I've joined DeviantArt (I haven't) or if I'm a member of FurAffinity (I'm not) or if I have an "adult" gallery somewhere (I don't.)

The simple fact is, I'm a http://www.docsmachine.com/customguns.html - machinist first and foremost, and in my all-too-rare spare time, I occasionally draw a comic strip. Some of my readers are, however, capital-F Furries, and I'll occasionally throw them some "fan service", like this week.

Next week we'll be back to the paintball and blowing stuff up (but not at the same time. :D )

-According to my page stats, between 10,000 and 20,000 people a day do.

Last Wednesday (the first "cheesecake" scene) there were almost 40,000 pageviews- that's not far off of the total circulation of APG Magazine (about 50K last I heard.)

By readership numbers, TWB is in the top fifty or sixty webcomics- and there's something like eleven thousand webcomics out there.

Not to brag or anything.

Wow. Didn't mean to sound like an arse there. Time to cover my behind. In all honesty, I'm actually a fan of your comic. I found it a long time ago, and a few days later, I had caught up with he whole thing. Now, it's on my repertoire of comics I check religiously, along with Cyanide and Happiness, Questionable Content and Dr. McNinja. I've given up on VGcats...

-Nothing wrong with that. People have varying tastes. That's hardly news. I knew when I started the strip that, since it was about a niche-market subject like paintball (as opposed to the computers/tech-support/videogames all the other comics were about at the time) that it'd never have much mass appeal.

It's just a hobby to me, some people like it, some don't. No biggie.

Quote Anyway, just making discussion . Sorry to insult.

-No worries, I didn't take it as an insult. I was just idly looking at my page stats, saw this thread, had a couple minutes to wander over and join the conversation.

Anyway, yeah, this week's run is a little on the racy side (well, for a mainstream webcomic, that is) but it's just a little "fan service". Like I said, we'll be back to paintball and explosions next week. (But not at the same time.)

Ebay changed their pricing scale in March. They "lowered" the cost to post an auction, but nearly doubled the percentage they took out of the final value.

So between that and PayPal's fees, any auction that finished under about five bucks or so- and that's mostly what I had left, was little $3 and $5 parts- wasn't worth the effort of posting it. A $3 auction left me a total profit of about nine cents.

Between that and the playing season getting underway, it wasn't worth my time anymore.

It's virtually impossible to caricature a player in a mask.

I mean, besides the fact I can't draw decent human faces in the first place, let alone one that's recognizably somebody. But throw a mask on, and unless he's got a jersey with his name on it, and only seen from the back...

Though I suppose I could have one of the characters saying something like "Yeah, those jerks over at paintballchat.com...!" or "that idiot DeTrevni on the Tippmann board...!"

Wow, it's Doc Nickel!

I go away for 2 days and I almost miss a celebrity?  Typical.

Anyway, Been a regular reader of TWB for about 2.5 years now.  I've been slowing down on my paintball playing for financial reasons (yeah, I play stock), but your comics inspire me to try to make it out at least a couple times a year.  I remember ogling all of your custom markers back when I played.  I was eventually going to try to buy a half-block kit for my cocker, but I never got around to it (regrettably).

Your webcomic aside, can you fill us in on any projects you have in the makes?  Is the rail-gun marker real?  How about getting Vista installed on an Invert Mini?  How about some coffee recipes?  You know... for my girlfriend.

Its nice to see you around, Doc. As with many, I love TWB.

It would be nice to see if you could publish all of the strips into a book one day. Hell, I would buy it.

I'll take this chance to beg for stickers, a 98og.net and "SSOK" insertion into TWB.

Good job Detrevni. Try badmouthing Kaye or Budd next, you never know

I hope you can stick around a little Doc. Its nice to chat with well known people.

Quote As I mentioned in my previous post, I'd love it if paintballchat could get a mention in your comic.

-Well, I could suggest helping out a starving airsmith by buying time on the PW banner ad at the top of the TWB page... Right now, it's only a buck a day.

But barring that, I'll have to see if I can squeeze in a mention...

Quote I go away for 2 days and I almost miss a celebrity?

-I'm hardly what you'd call a celebrity. I'm just a guy that spends way too damn much time online...

Quote Your webcomic aside, can you fill us in on any projects you have in the makes?

-Nothing terribly amazing at the moment. Lots of basic repair stuff, the usual stripped threads (grip frames, feed necks, air fittings, etc.) and a few bits I'm working on for the next http://www.docsmachine.com/tees/ - preorder run .

If you're a fan of other webcomics, there is one thing I'm building for another artist. I think it'll be a fun surprise. (Sorry, no hints, but it'll be a Christmas present for him.)

I was trying to put a Morlock and MQ into my old Stroker, but the valve chamber is much too small. Not sure if I can mod that, as the valve chamber is soldered in- the gun was originally a Piranha.

I've got a few other things I'm working on, but a lot of them are personal projects that I often don't have much time for.

Quote It would be nice to see if you could publish all of the strips into a book one day. Hell, I would buy it.

-Well, I have three books available in my store right now- link above. I may one day do a "treasury" type book, but don't hold your breath. These smaller ones are already pretty expensive to make.

As for the stickers, as I said in my earlier post, E-mail me your mailing address and I'll send you some. Inventory changes, so I can't promise which stickers you'll get, but I'll send something.

Not necessary; just have someone saying "want some candy little kid" and everyone here will know who it is supposed to be.

All that would be required for a DeTrevni cameo is some guy in the store pointing with multiple arms repeating the words "I want that" about a bazillion times.

The DeTrevni look would need a fedora, Hawaiian shirt, and perhaps an obnoxious, outdated marker (Osirus, Rainmaker, PGP, KP2...).

Main point across would be the theme of "tacky".

Also, Doc could say something along the lines of "Kids just seem backwards these days" as a reference to his name "inverTeD".

That would be gold.

Heh,

I wonder how often Doc gets flooded with requests like this when ever he posts on a forum.

That being said, I'm sure he has a great deal of other things to worry about which dwarf the concept of drawing some obscure kid with inverted spelled backwards into his strip.

It would however, be all together amazing should a brief, yet insulting (for humor purposes) plug be thrown PBC's way - (Speaking from a purely non affiliated stand point).

Keep up the good work Doc, thanks for dropping in!
