Personally I laugh harder at how much of a hick you are than how much of a hippie these people are.

I always feel like the comments beneath the video are far more valuable than the actual video itself.

Yeah, I laughed, a lot.

There are 'hippies' then there are these lunatics.

For their concern about our 'lost identity' as we move into the world of technology, they have a http://www.earthfirst.org/about.htm - nifty web site.

Isn't wonderful what you can do when mommy and daddy work real hard and keep sending money. It's the Rachel Corrie effect. Too much money, free time and lack of brains. Kinda sad that there are actually American college students who need to take paper-rock-bulldozer 101.

2 things...

1st, i wonder how they feel about the thousands of acers that burned in NC this summer...

2nd, a few years ago the navy wanted to put an air base just over the nc/va line. people flipped out because it was a "wetland reserve" which means nasty swamp... anyways it just so happened the exact area where they wanted the base burnt to the ground...

did you know, that for every tree a company cuts down they plant 10 more. And that there are more trees in America now than when
Columbus landed in the Caribbean.

You really shouldn't be alone playing on this side of the internet kid.

Find a puddle, you're going to want to be as wet as possible before the flaming starts :)

There is some truth to the tree stats. I don't really care either way but some factors are easy to explain.

Most people live in areas with few trees and on going development. They see the "evil" of mankind everyday so this "fact" sounds completely impossible.

We fight fires nowadays and don't just run away and let them burn out on their own.

Trees are crops and if they are replaced at 10 seedlings to one old tree, that adds up real quick.

Up until @100 years ago Americans were real poor at planning for the future and replacing trees.

Even the "at one with nature" indians had some deforestation problems. One of the dead cliff cities out west was probably abandoned after they cut all the wood within a distance that they could stand walking (no horses).

No earth worms before settlers arrived in North America. This meant forests had no bushy undergrowth like today. This limited the number of small trees that could pop up through the sustantial amount of natural mulch that cut down on competition.

Read that first but it had too much fluff. I wanted a simple answer with some numbers, pictures and a nice bar graph :)

"forest cover in the Baltimore-Washington area decreased from 51% in 1973 to 39% in 1997"

I don't think you needed much of a study to figure that one out.

I admit that it is unfair to count 1000 "trees" that stand 6" high to one that is 1000 years old but the blustery right-wing comment wasn't "there are more old growth trees now than when we first killed all the natives" or "there is now more land covered by large forests than there was when we started raping this land".
