Topic: Bro
Posted By: Rambino
Subject: Bro
Date Posted: 04 September 2008 at 4:03pm

So it recently came to my attention that there may be two homonymic words "bro" with quite distinct meanings.

I have always known "bro" to be basically any obnoxious college fratboy. Quasi-preppy, loudly homophobic to the point of making one wonder, popped collar, seemingly always on their way to or from a party with "brews," and yelling "woooo!" a lot.

Apparently there is a second kind of "bro" in SoCal which is associated with dirt-biking, lifted trucks, wife-beaters, and other WT-type behavior and attire.

Can anybody confirm this?  What would happen if these two clans were in a deathmatch?

I am familiar with both of your meanings. I have always understood the use of bro as just dude or man.

Brah is a Hawaiian term that SoCal surfers misappropriated.  I don't think it is related to "bro."

I've never really associated it with a certain group of people, but since
coming to college I have noticed an overusage by the fraternity crowd.

It is both actually.

If you are in Southern California, it can mean said wifebeater-wearers.

Most places however, it means "College kid who lifts a lot of weights, listens to Dave Mathews, plays beerpong with his fraternity brothers, and does poorly in class."

I don't know one "bro" that listens to Dave Mathews or anything near that style of music I don't know how that is in the stereotype. I searched Urban Dictionary and there is no mentioning of Dave Mathews in the definition.

I CAN CONFIRM!

I live in so cal. The bro's are funny as hell. Wear black all the time. Straight brim hats. Love dirtbikes and raised truck. Usually somewhat white power.

Have a fascination with the term "DGAF"

And have equally amusing girls, called "bro-hoes"

Long live so cal

Oh and in a deathmatch the DGAF bros would destroy. I've been to many parties where bros crash it and start fights for no reason.

Keep in mind, though, that a significant number of the frat-bros are football players and/or wrestlers, and they all like to lift weights and/or take steroids.

Plus, they often have really short spiky hair.

From my experience, so cal bros always have either a knife, bat, or gun on them. Or all of the above.

The Bro's PB125 are referencing do nothing but ride
dirtbikes, lift weights, buy hair products, drink and
start fights (usually involving their ENTIRE "crew").

We have them here too, they love to put stupid phrases
on the top of the windsheild on their truck and wear
white huge sunglasses. I always get a laugh out of their
Brodozers

What you need to watch out for are
"du's"

Commonly confused with bro's, the du's are called such, because they use the word 'dude' without ever finishing the whole world, more often than not because said du is high and couldn't remember what he was going to say.  The du may also just say du upon being surprised, or when he has a thought.  The du will ask you to 'lax' with him, or to 'lax it up' and then go to Chipotle.  The du is very similar to a bro.

Beware the du.

Ah- in that case, advantage them.  The most a frat bro will have is a beer bottle and a frat paddle.

Is ChadBroChill around? Anyone seen Chad? We were supposed to study sciences...I brought some Natty Ice and a game cube to bro it up with him....anyone?

In Washington we have a bit of a hybrid when it comes to bros. The college frat bro will wear a rediculous bandana, drink terrible beer, and party any time he isn't sleeping. If the bandana happens to be in the washer, then out comes the flat-billed hat.

HOWEVER, because this is a fairly mellow/hippy state a regular person such as myself will also wear a flat billed hat with sunglasses when attending a water-based function such as going to the lake to jet ski or wakeboard. When I am surfing in Cali/Hawaii though, it's a simple "Brah" and whatnot which is generally used as a sign of acceptance unless otherwise specified that you are in fact, a tool.

You guys are making me flashback to college when the frat brats wandered around campus with exactly the descriptions that have been painted.

-The popped collar on the flimsy and feminine colored button down shirt,
-The short spiked hair, or full 'blow out' with some sort of workout swear band wrapped around the top of their heads.
-The gang of similarly dressed dead-in-the-eyes individuals
-The loudly related stories of sexual exploits, alcohol consumption and the new STD that's traveling through circles of the new sorority.

Yep.....It's all there.

Don't be confused, they may also be seen in any lightly colored pair of workout sweats and sleeveless t-shirt or wife-beater...but they're the same animal.

Bro culture is in a dead heat with Goth for ease of identification.

And once a Bro gathering starts to manifest it will grow exponentially more "Bro'ish" (not really a better word for it at this point) with each new addition, as each new Bro interacts with every other Bro present and has to get louder, drunker, and more pathetic to keep up.

At critical mass the Bro gathering can start any number of fights and/or general troublesome acts given that they will be impossible to identify as individuals to the relevant authorities.

If you come into contact with a wandering Bro gathering the best, and safest, course of action is to vacate the area, taking only what you must and abandoning the rest to Bro infestation. Give the area at least 24 hours to be certain the gathering has removed itself and then begin the process of decontaminating the area of beer cans, hoes, and sweated off Axe spray.

An established Bro gathering, such as a frat house, is best avoided altogether.

Rambino is correct. Bro's can also be identified with frequent dirt bikers or UFC hopefulls (more than likely hopeless) that troll the SoCal (in my experience, Orange County) community. It is also mandatory that you buy a black pickup truck and put as many Tapout, Fox Racing, and dirt biking related stickers on it as possible to ensure you look like some sort of famous dirt biking, UFC fighting legend.

The unique thing about these Bro's is that many of them are openly racist, right up until someone calls them out on it. Some even go as far as to say they are part of a "White Power" movement.

Their natural habitats include the beach (tanning only), the gym, their parent's house and Jack in the Box (the one nearest my house was called "Chill Jack"). When removed from the familiar landmarks aforementioned, the Bro can become confused, which has been known to result in sudden outbursts of hostility and anger, known as "Broid Rage". Temporary cures for Broid Rage include curly fries, fights, hot chicks, sweet dirt bikes, and lifted trucks.

At any rate, the Bro is located near the bottom of the SoCal food chain, above Emo kids and below beach bums.
