As a transplanted NY'r today has special meaning. As many of you know I spent a few years after my retirement of the Army with the NYPD, and each day going to work the Twin Towers were there prominant in the sky. Each year the family goes back to NY, and still when I see the hole in the sky it is hard. For the first time I went to Trinity Church, where the rescue workers rested, there are still scuff marks on the pews and the Father will not let them be repainted a monument to the Fire and Police workers who rested there a few hours. Interestingly Trinity Church is less than one block from the old WTC site and was not damaged at all other than a large tree that fell.
I am also fascinated about a man, Rick Rescorla, anyone who has seen the original cover of "We Were Soldiers, Once and Young" book the young LT in the cover pickture is Rick Rescorla. He was the Security Chief for Morgan Stanley in the WTC, as he led his people and others out of the building, accounting for all his people, he sang cornish songs to ease the tension. This old veteran was last seen charging back up the stairs to find and help more people, a true leader, his remains were never found.

Let us not forget 9/11, and all the heros. BTW the Opening of the new Infantry Museum is scheduled for Mar 2009, I am going. |

| Speaking of New Yorkers, it was very weird not being home for the first time on 9/11. Here in Rhode Island the mood is very different. Life goes on as normal except for the few of us that come from NY. Interesting observation |

I can still remember seeing the smoke from my house, 63 miles away. it was really quiet. I stood in the middle of the L.I.E. during what should have been rush hour, I stopped my car, got out, in the middle lane and watched the smoke. Not a car in sight. ------------- Innocence proves nothing FUAC!!!!! |

I live within five miles of the crash site of United Flight 93. I'll never forget watching the event on TV, the news networks were a disaster. They were flipping between coverage of the WTC in New York, and the Pentagon in DC. They were breaking news without ever getting facts. Some may remember at one point they erroneously announced that a truck bomb had exploded at the US State Dept building in DC.
While all of this was happening, the fire whistle went off, and County 911 Control said a plane crashed near Shanksville. Now, even with all of this happening, and the fact that Somerset, County, PA is about 30 minutes from DC and NYC by plane, it seemed impossible that there was any relation. Until the local news reporter arrived on scene, I thought it had to have been a private Cessna or something had crashed. |

What years were you with NYPD OS, what did you do? I didn't know the story of the guy on the book cover- it is interesting. My father-in-law, a long time NYPD officer was on his way into the second tower just before it fell. He was called back to the shooting range where he worked to lock it down. Luckily. His daughter and I, not yet even dating, spent the day glued to the television out at college. I remember being pissed off at my roommate for having woke me up on my only day of the week I could sleep in. ------------- ? |

9/11/01 was such a beutiful day weather wise in the Tri-State area. It was warm and the sun shone through a crystal blue sky. It made everything so surreal. I remember when our principal told us the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were bombed by terrorists. First it was like, what is she talking about, but a minute later it really set in. There were reports other planes were missing and being in Jersey and smack in the middle of this chaos was really nerve racking. My grandparents up in Middlesex County could see the WTC on clear days from certain roards, this is what they saw that day. There was very little traffic, and people were just congregating on the hills and staring in disbelief. Until today I have not been able to find a picture of the WTC from Woodbridge. I don't know who took this picture but it shows just how far you could see that day. -------------

Come to think of it. The weather was nice that day, I'm in Michigan but still. I remember coming home after school, talking with the neighbors with my mom and we were all standing outside. Was cool and breezy. I guess in a way I remember everything about that day. EDIT: fractus, feels odd typing this, but thats a great picture. -------------
