...From the New York Times.

To be specific, a political editor of the New York Times. Like, at the desk, working on the paper.
She is in charge of a project.
Apparently they want representatives from what they consider to be some of the top college newspapers in the country to take part in their project.

Somehow...my name came up.

They are going to have me, and whoever else they picked, watch the upcoming presidential debates and do a live blog on how I feel about it, which will scroll along with the live feed they will run.
So yeah. I don't even know what to say right now...

Whale's first post:

Alternative energy is a double edged sword here at UCF, where the large majority of students do not live on campus. So many students are driving and taking busses to class. Money is spent nearly every day on some sort of fuel, but how is that comparative to the costs of switching over? Universities in the state of Florida are already suffering from crippling budget cuts and hiring freezes. How much can we really spend
on alternative energy?

Spending freezes are not going to help us here. A hiring freeze was implemented here in at the University, and it has done nothing but worsen the situation. We are stuck with an awful student to teacher ratio and awful budget issues, and we cannot bring aboard people to help ourselves.

I am thoroughly enjoying this.  Both guys are smart, articulate, and not excessively getting stuck in their talking points.

Certainly WAY better than the 2000/2004 debates.

Another Whale post:

At a place the size of UCF, a place with over 50,000 students, we learn to understand that there will be people out there who are going to be different than us, who will see the world in an opposite way. How do we learn about them? How do we find out how they tick? By talking to them. That is why ideas like talking to foreign leaders is a good thing, and is based off of simple human psychology. I cannot imagine going around my university and refusing
to talk to someone simply on the basis of thinking they are bad people, without actually talking to them.

I just finished my final thoughts, they should be posted earlier.

I am curious as to what you (my political knowledge sensai) have to say about what I had to say. Say what?

I think originally they were supposed to use another system, but it broke, so they ended up just having us quick-submit stuff. They were turning around stuff super quick, and honestly they took about 1/8 of what I typed.

Not that I am complaining. I am so happy I got this opportunity.

Got another e-mail today. The panel got invited back to do the same thing with the VP debate.

I think the big debate was pretty close, with some telling features.

However, this VP debate is not going to be pretty at all. The racked up gaffes this week on Palin sure don't add up for a rockstar debate performance.
