Read this on a site I visit which has mostly conservative views. Wondered what you guys would think of this seeing as to how most of you are liberals. THE BIRD FEEDER SYNDROME-A SURVIVAL THOUGHT FOR TODAY I bought a bird feeder. I hung it on my back porch and filled it with seed. What a beauty of a bird feeder it is, as I filled it lovingly with seed. Within a week we had hundreds of birds taking advantage of the continuous flow of free and easily accessible food. But then the birds started building nests in the boards of the patio, above the table, and next to the barbecue. Then came the poop. It was everywhere: on the patio tile, the chairs, the table, everywhere! Then some of the birds turned mean. They would dive bomb me and try to peck me even though I had fed them out of my own pocket. And others birds were boisterous and loud. They sat on the feeder and squawked and screamed at all hours of the day and night and demanded that I fill it when it got low on food. After a while, I couldn't even sit on my own back porch anymore. So I took down the bird feeder and in three days the birds were gone. I cleaned up their mess and took down the many nests they had built all over the patio. Soon, the back yard was like it used to be.... quiet, serene and no one demanding their rights to a free meal. Now let's see. Our government gives out free food, subsidized housing, free medical care, and free education and allows anyone born here to be an automatic citizen. Then the illegals came by the tens of thousands. Suddenly our taxes went up to pay for free services; small apartments are housing 5 families; you have to wait 6 hours to be seen by an emergency room doctor; your child's 2nd grade class is behind other schools because over half the class doesn't speak English. Corn Flakes now come in a bilingual box; I have to 'press one' to hear my bank talk to me in English, and people waving flags other than 'Our own' are squawking and screaming in the streets, demanding more rights and free liberties. Just my opinion, but maybe it's time for the government to take down the bird feeder. If you agree, pass it on; if not, continue cleaning up the poop! -------------

You know, whoever wrote that could have at least complained about things that aren't stupid. Waiting in an emergency room? Pressing 1? People waving other flags? Hell, come to Boston or any other city and you'll see Irish flags all over the south end and Italian flags all over the North end all waved by people who have never even seen those countries. Eh, when it comes to illegals I think the government has gone about things in a very bass-ackwards way. Instead of cutting the availability of visas and making the entry regulations harder across the board but leaving our borders open, we should do the opposite. Keep tight control of our borders, but allow those who wish to enter legally a much easier means of doing so. I don't think this post is 'racist' but there's no denying that it's stupid. Its the sort of thing that staunch conservatives dream up in an effort to oversimplify complicated issues. The people that write these things are the people that we on the right who have more than a handful of braincells wish would dedicate more time to oral hygiene and haircuts than making political statements. ------------- ? |

This is actually one of the problems with current immigration policy. The easiest way to legally immigrate to the US is to be a gold-digger or a reformed communist with no money. Not picking on you, but this illustrates another way that most people misunderstand how hard it is to immigrate legally. The basic rule is that you are only allowed to join the military if you already have a green card. Your service generally comes with accelerated citizenship, but since you already had a green card you were fully legal already. Illegals and visitors generally cannot join the military. It has happened, but it is against the rules. The military is not a path to immigration. Bruce is right, unfortunately. Back during WWI and WWII, you could immigrate to the US and gain citizenship through enlistment, but somewhere in the early 1950's that all went away. Even then, there were restrictions. Citizens of "enemy" nations or ethnic backgrounds were barred from this particular route (though I don't think we ever disallowed Germans to enter this way...) I think if you used service to guarantee legality and a fast-track to naturalization (basically a "cut the line card") once their enlistment was up, you'd find a lot of people willing to enlist and bolster our military which needs more men and women to serve. As I stated earlier. It is far easier to get into this country illegally than it is to legally. We need to flip-flop that. I know degree-holding Europeans and Asians who would die to come back and work legally, paying taxes, medicaid, and Social Security fees the entire time. However, we only allow F-1 Visa holders to work 20 hours per week at a "work study" position on their college campus, J-1 visa holders can only come twice on a J-1 visa (the easiest work-allowed visa to get) and then they have to go back home and stay in their home country for 2 years minimum before re-applying. The only other option for people who want to legally immigrate to the US and work is to either apply for a green card (a long, arduous, and silly process that requires you to file a petition, pay the fees, have a sponsor, and then stay here until you get said green card which can take more than 3 years to get) Or apply for a H-1B visa of which they only give out 65,000/year. Again, I say loosen-up the visa and green card requirements. Make visa holders pay the same taxes that US citizens do, and guard the heck out of our borders to keep illegal immigration to a minimum. Also impose far more harsh punishments on illegal immigrants. ------------- <Removed overly wide sig. Tsk, you know better.> |

Oh, almost forgot. It think they need to do away with the "born here" system of citizenship. I think that if you are born to an immigrant family, at least one of your parents should be required to be a naturalized citizen of the USA at the time of your birth for you to be considered a US citizen. i.e. no more border jumpers who get knocked up and then claim asylum as their child is a US citizen. ------------- <Removed overly wide sig.
