I realized long ago that I couldn't keep all black people down, so I married one and just focus on her. If one of you had had the foresight to marry Obama, we wouldn't be in this mess today :)

Interesting that there were no statistics regarding the percentage of non-whites that were voting for Obama simply because he is not white. Everyone seems to think that whites are the only ones that are racist. You don't have stats on this because you are pulling this info out of your rearend. Southern states have the reputation for being inherently racist, but racism exists everywhere in the U.S. I am originally from Florida and yes, we had a lot of "good ole boys" that were very openly racist, but that has quelled over the years as the population has become very multiracial. I now live in Ohio and run into what I would consider just as much racism, if not more. What he said. I went back to my dad's home town area of upstate New York (Montour Falls), with my wife. We went into a Pizza Hut and the restaurant went silent. We seated ourselves and the waitress was actually having trouble talking to us and her hands shook a little. The rest of the patrons were looking at us sideways and shushing their kids the whole time. Big laughs after driving from "racist SC" where no one cares (except for certain night clubs and bars. ------------- My shoes of peace have steel toes. |

Yeah, admittedly, NY has a big population of ignorant racists. Small town NYers have a LOT of prejudice built up inside of them. Not to the point of violence or even vocally- but its there. Spend some time with them and you'll know it. ------------- ? |

He probably doesnt like Puerto Ricans or Cubans either. Even within the "Spanish" population there is racism between the different nationalities. Look at Italians and Irish even. How many people would refuse to vote for a presidential candidate that was Catholic? Or Jewish? Hindu? Well Im sorry but if african americans and I use that term loosely want to hold a grudge over slavery because their great granpa was a slave. Well then I have a grudge against them because my great granpa died freeing them. I'm as shocked as you are.
Possibly because I live on the coast in Charleston and I don't travel in circles where such things would happen. Groceries, work and church (I'm a party animal). I work in an environment where the slightest bit of racism gets you walked out, so I don't meet too many jerks. Restaurants are cool (here) because no matter how someone really feels, they want your money i.e. "Shucks, a racistwordy-lover with money ain't hardly a racistwordy lover 'tall". Church isn't a problem because if anybody said something I'd throw a snake on them :) ------------- My shoes of peace have steel toes. |

Eh, they may have just phrased the question awkwardly, or somehow allowed the negative connotation associated with the 'hood be reflected in the question/answer. It seems that people are more likely to allow racial undertones in their response as opposed to blatant racism. I don't believe my father to be a racist, but he was happy to see a white kid get off the bus one day while I was in middle school as opposed to all the other "crackheads" that were getting off, all of whom happened to be black. He, along with the people polled (I am hoping) allowed a preconceived notion that isn't necessarily racist to affect how he viewed something, making them seem racist.
Yeah, it's similar here. I've never had girlfriend, much less a non-white one, and I wouldn't expect someone to get commented on/scoffed at/glared at grudgingly in public around here, but I know for a fact that a larger-than-you-might-think percentage of the population still views inter-racial dating/marriage as something to look down upon. My cousin got ridiculed by the family because he he dated a hispanic girl, and when I allowed a black girl to get friendly with me, people would "joke" that I would be stupid to allow a black girl to do that to me. I'm sure its worse in the rural parts of Texas I rarely venture to. And that's obviously nothing substantive, since it is only a limited portrayal of what one person has experienced, but I promise you more people harbor racist thoughts than Johnny or others seem to be letting on. -------------

Reading comprehension doesn't seem to be a strong point on this forum. Nowhere in any of my posts do I refer to Ohio as the South. Obviously, it was meant as a comparison between attitudes in the South vs those in the North. USAF, not exactly sure what you issue is with me, but it is getting old. I responded to a comment by what appeared to be a relatively new member that was completely off base. No, I did not look at all his posts to figure out/realize that it was Bland. Had I, I probably would have still commented, but made a notation of it and responded accordingly. Regarding my comments on Ohio and Florida, reread my posts and nowhere did I say Ohio was a Southern state. I grew up and lived in Florida for 34 years. I think I know a little bit about it. So in short, if you want to keep attempting to bait me into a negative reply, knock yourself out, but it isn't going to happen. I stand behind my comments and continue making them where I see fit.
