Looks like an un-trustworthy, mediocre website.

I think you'd need to develop some real services, and possibly another few pages linked to your main.

Neon Green and Black is way to 1998.

I'd widen the layout. Especially when you start adding content, 500 pixels will be very small. At the very least, I like to go around 750 pixels wide.

well, i had it thinner to be able to add polls etc on the margins, think i'll try it out though, i can always change it again later...

The majority of people use at least 1024x768 these days.

I think you'd still have room for smaller second or third columns.

yeah, thats what i'm using, and your right, it would have to be skinny, but i could still put it there.

You could also maximize your width by using percentages instead of of static pixel widths. That way, it can expand to fit each user's demands.

Too much fading. If you look at other professionally designed website layouts, the visuals are simple at best. On this one, for example, it's just blocks of grays and blues. Simple is better. Also, find a very basic text, preferably sans serif for body text. This is my opinion, of course.

The font doesn't bother me. Arial is a standard web text.

Maybe try keeping the gradient on the menubar, and see what a solid color looks like on the bars above and below the content block.

done, you guys think that looks better?

edit, side by side comparison

http://jedworks.com/index.php - no gradient

I think I liked the gradient more.

Also, uniformity will look better. I'd make the top and bottom bars the same size...actually take whichever size you prefer (I like the small size on the bottom), and flip it vertically to make the top, so they are identical mirror copies of one antother.

Eesh, you need to use a style sheet, seriously.

I think a good format that easy to see, use, navigate, and I've seen quite a few of their competitors start to copy is the webpage for a local diesel performance/machine shop: http://citydiesel.net -

Too blue, use more grey in that shade, your whole page looks like a link bar :(

USE DIVS MAN.

Also, a little too much contrast between the logo and the color scheme of the links.

Otherwise, pretty basic layout, functional, it works well for what your content will be.

You have way too much time on your hands...

Look into Ajax, you can do some really good stuff with that. The site doesn't look bad right now but it is kind of plain/boring. Are you going to provide content like news about updates to some open source projects? If so, you could put some kind of a news section on the home page and maybe have it cycle through some pictures with headlines on them or something just to sort of bring some life to the page.

Wishing to learn a skill as basic as the ability to properly code HTML means he has too much time on his hands??

HTML is not a "basic skill". If you're using HTML for anything, you're doing something wrong.

I learned HTML when I was about 14, and I've never seen a reason to go back. Maybe that's just me. I think not though.

For anyone with an interest in creating or maintaining a webpage or blog, I'd say HTML is indeed a basic skill. Not everyone just wants to shove content onto a wordpress template.

Since AJ wants to create a website, then I'd say that yeah, html is a basic skill.

your brush desgin on the edge of the banner is very janky, the cut off from white to the black background looks really bad.

Usually you want the banner to blend into the background.
