Ok guys. Here goes a HUGE post. I have a Tippmann MODEL 98. My dad bought it from a guy at his work. Came with gear and two 20 oz. Co2 Tanks. Below is everything the gun came with. * Note, this is a MODEL 98, not a 98 CUSTOM! Yes, the older model is a beastly gun.

Tippmann MODEL 98

  • Tippmann MODEL 98
  • Flatline Barrel
  • 200 round feeder
  • New bolt
  • Red dot scope

Heres a Picture

http://imageshack.us">

As you can tell, it is in GREAT SHAPE. Everybody I showed the gun to thinks it is in the best condition they have seen. This gun is 8-10 years old!

Ok, I was thinking about getting a new Tippmann. I can't decide on whether to keep my current gun and just to ask for new gear and stuff. Or I was going to get one of the following options.

Tippmann A-5

Tippmann 98 CUSTOM ACT Edition

Of course I am going to get upgrades if I get any of the options. If I got the 98 CUSTOM, I would be able to get more upgrades, I was going to get the Flatline Barrel, Double Trigger, and stuff like that.

If I got the A-5, I wouldn't be able to get as many upgrades, but I am getting,"More bang for my buck?"And overall I want to cusomize it, but yet I want to stay on a lower budget.

98 CUSTOM = More Upgrades

A-5 = More gun, less upgrades

Keep Current Gun= High Quality Gear

Here is where I need everyones thoughts and Ideas on what I should do.

wow man. i think you have a pretty good deal on your hands right there.  my opinion  i dont think its necessary to upgrade to the new 98 customs.  the a-5 is cool, because of the cyclone, and maybe the trigger swaps.  its always cool to have a mechanical as backup.  but if you were to buy new maybe checkout something electro. (or the a-5 with e-grip or response trigger) i guess that would work too.  u have 1 flatline. i wouldnt get another if you were buying the a-5. but again, my opinion.  ive got a lapco bigshot apex ready. its awesome with and without the apex.

have a happy christmas. do lots of research before u commit.

Ya, thanks for the advice. I did get a very good deal on this, I had to pay my dad for it. Um, the only bad thing about this flatline, it does not screw on like the new flatlines. It has a clamp that goes on it and as you can see, it has a whole rail on it that goes all the way to the backend sight.

For some reason I can get the flatline off, but I cannot get the clamp off, so that means I can't attach any barrel but the flatline because it is a flatline clamp. Is it a bad thing that I can only use a flatline, or should I just leave it on for good. I might be able to get one of my local paintball stores to get it off for me, but is it worth it or should I just leave it on for good?

And it came with a stock barrel, but what is an apex?

Apex is a barrel and it has 4 type of shooting mode like left hook, right hook, drop shot and long flat trajectory shot.

You have to loosen the body screws for installation/removal of the clamp.

Sorry for the double post, I am on different Computer so it wouldn't let me edit my last post.

I took the screw completly off the clamp, it wouldn't budge. Roweazie, I couldn't get that website to open.

Like Mack said, you need to loosen the bolts that hold the body of the marker together in order to be able to screw the clamp out.

If you are looking at a new marker, I wouldn't get another 98. Go with an A-5 or something new. It seems silly to buy another 98 and put a flatline on it when you already have one.

In some cases, if it has taken hits and paint has been allowed to dry in/around it or some knucklehead loctited it in (seen it) you may actually have to separate the body halves and clean out the threads as well.

Since you are new to this a word of warning about separating the body halves.  Do it on a light colored towel (that you don't mind possibly ruining) that is placed on a large workspace over an uncluttered non-carpeted floor.  The towel will keep small parts from rolling off and the floor I specified will make it easier to find dropped parts.  Be aware that there are several parts under spring tension inside the marker so separate the halves carefully.  (Keep your hand on the end cap as you take the marker apart.)

The "basic paintball" sticky at the top of this page contains further hints for taking markers apart.

You should have taken the opportunity to open up the marker and clean the insides as well. If there is paint/debri buildup where the barrel screws in, you may have more inside the marker. It is very simple to do and should be a regular part of maintainance. If you don't have the manual for it, you can download it at http://www.tippmannparts.com - www.tippmannparts.com .

There's nothing much that tippmann offers currently that you don't llready have within your 98.

Maybe look out of tippmann for your next marker?

I am kind of looking for an electric marker maybe. Remember, this will be my second gun so not anything expensive. Maybe a 150 dollar gun.

And if I do clean the inside, how long will it take to take apart and put together, this is the first time I have ever done this. If it is difficult, I will just get a paintball store to do it for mefor $5.

Willing to buy used? You can't get very far with $150 even if you buy used.

You have owned it for ten years yet never cleaned the insides?

No, I bought it from a guy at my dads work. I bought it about 2 weeks ago. This gun has only been used one or two times, and that was about 3-4 years ago.

I was thinking about getting a Smart Parts ION, I know it is more than 150, but not much more.

Oh...

Well the ion is a decent marker but you can get a lot better for a little more.

Keep in mind that you will need hpa/an electric hopper for anything much better than a tippmann.

Ok first off, do the electric guns run off of Co2, or compressed air?

Depends on the marker but as a general rule, compressed air (the really low end ones such as e-tippmanns and spyders would work fine on co2)

I have a Q-Loader on my Autococker.  I like it because it reduces the profile of the vertically fed marker.

No, not really.

They are a horribly unreliable business, make a product that isn't durable and it a pain in the butt to use.

Still set on the ion?

I believe I might get an ION because they are well within my budget, and I can upgrade them. The PMR is to expensive for me.

I was looking at the Qloader website and they haven't updated it since last year... So I will probably go with a Halo loader or something.

And screw all of the upgrades for the ION, I was browsing around at the virtue board and it looks pretty sweet. I believe I am going to get the following:

  • Smart Parts ION
  • Halo Loader
  • Virtue Board

PLEASE DO NOT STOP GIVING SUGGESTIONS! I am pretty much new to this stuff so I don't really know whats good and whats not. I am very much still open for suggestions!

But once you factor in the cost of upgrading an ion, the pmr has better value.

Halos are good

remember that you need an hpa tank.

THANK YOU CARL THE SNIPER!! I was looking around on the Proto Matrix Website and I found a gun called Proto Matrix SLG!!

Do you think it would be better than an ION? Because I really like the Proto Matrix SLG better than the ION!!

I don't know much about that one myself but from what I can see, it looks like a solid marker. I'd personally take that over an ion any day, especially if you don't want to fork out the cash for the pmr.

You might want to go for a second opinion though since I don't know too much about it.

Remember that you will need an HPA tank and a reasonably fast hopper.

Ok cool, I really like the board settings on this gun and it weighs in at 2 pounds 2 oz. That is pretty cool.

  • I was thinking about getting a 72ci 3000psi Hpa tank for $84. If you know of a website that is trusted and I can get it cheaper let me know.
  • And about a hopper, what would you recommend? Is there a hopper out there that doesnt load paint as fast as a halo, but is cheaper?

I did find this hopper, it is a VIEWLOADER EVLUTION III. It feeds up to 23 bps, which is reasonably good, right? It comes in smoke color too.

PRICE=$69.99

I would look for a used hopper. Personally, I like the VLocity JR. As far as the HPA tank, I would look for that used as well. You can get a 68/4500 tank used for about $100. If you can't afford HPA yet, look into the Smart Parts Vibe. I got one at TWC, and it runs just fine on CO2. Plus it is right in your $150 price range.

Look for a used hopper is right.

Cheap hpa tanks such as the one that you posted can be gotten used for about $40-50.

Make sure you check the hydro date and condition before buying.

Also you are in the market at the right time.  Keep your eye on ebay for some of the HPA tanks.  I bid sniped a great one last year (it was a 91/4500 with 4 years left on the hydro) for about 100.  I will say that if you are looking into going gun on you may want to keep your eye on the ones that are carbon fiber wrapped just because they are much lighter than the steel tanks.  Also just oto throw this one out there based on your budget. http://www.actionvillage.com/AVI-Paintball/paintball-paintball-guns-remanufactured-paintball-guns - http://www.actionvillage.com/AVI-Paintball/paintball-paintba ll-guns-remanufactured-paintball-guns   There are a few good guns here especially, IMO, the trilogy SF.  There is newer better guns out but they have a really good price on them and they are a good gun.  I have a trilogy that is all mech and I love the thing.  I dont really know anything about the Proto from personal use but I do know a few who have seen them in action and they said they were decent guns.  Really I would recommend going ot a proshop near you and holding a few guns.  I found that alot of markers I thought I would like just didnt feel right in my hands.  If it doesnt feel good  now it may not after alot of use either.

Ok, my local store doesn't sell used tanks. And plus I am not the one buying the tank. My grandparents are buying it for me so it doesn't matter if its used or not.

I think I am going to get the viewloader I mentioned above, it loads 23 bps which isnt bad for the price.

Ok and this is really random, but I just had to type the security code to login and the code was BEER. LOL.

Ok, I think I am going to get a 72ci 3000psi Hpa tank for $84. And I am going to get the viewloader. Now all I need to know is what speedball gear do you think I will need, I already have woodsball gear. And don't forget gun accessories!

well it depends if you want a harness or not.  Also that tank will be rather heavy so you may want to look into the fiber wrapped... just throwing it out there from experience.  i know they are pricier but they are worth it imo.  also you will most likely want to upgrade the barrel.  a good barrel for a budget is J&J.  they shoot through breaks and are very accurate.  all in all it depends on what you want to do in speed ball.

I think I am just going to stick with the tank I have chosen. I don't mind the extra weight and plus I will mainly be playing with friends. Eventually I will look into a fiber wrapped one.

Go with the gear upgrade. You have an exceptional weapon to wield. In the right hands, you can take ANYONE out. just do a remote line, and a rifle stock for a nice natural feel.
