Field Rations!

So yeah... we're going into the field this weekend (Farnham)for the first time. Should be a fun weekend even though it likely won't me much more than a glorified camping trip. Too bad I have tons of homework and no time to do it.

The breakfasts are chancy. Avoid anything Ham Steak if possible. If impossible, go for the one with mustard sauce.

The sausage and hash browns are the best breakfast, breakfast sausage is good too, and the bean and wieners are tolerable.

Any lunch or supper with poultry is usually quite good. Tarragon chicken strips are delicious. Anything pork is usually edible but not
amazing. Pasta or anything with cheese is hit or miss.

The bread is dry as hell, but it comes right apart if you eat it with a bit of water in your mouth. It's good with peanut butter.

Enjoy your camping trip, LOL. We just got rocketed again.

I always thought it would be funny to bring with me a NERF RPG type gun when I was on deployment. My brother had one growing up and it was pretty fun to play with. For effect, I thought about strapping a bottle rocket to it to make it seem as though it was somewhat real.

Know how the szechwan chicken is Brihard? I've heard mixed opinions and they still have a couple goulashes left which are supposedly the best.

Not sure, but I've never run into a poultry IMP that
violated my rule of thumb.

Thats one thing that Canadian soldiers know, we are lucky to have the best IMP's in the world. When I was in I had a colonel in the Green Berets offer to trade me his side arm for a box of lunch IMP's. By the way Carl and Brihard, if you guys know any older guys who are serving ask about the old omelette. Now that was a meal. The only thing it was good for was to make your boots water proof.

Ah yes, the mushroom omelette. That was also when they didn't think mac and cheese could give you food poisoning.

Luckily enough, they have stricter standards for production now and actually throw the ones that are over four years old in the garbage.

You want to know how to really save time when it comes to growlies? Skip the whole heating phase and dig in. They taste pretty much the same hot or cold...cold is just faster.

Oh, and this time of year, same goes for coffee. Just get the old airborne coffee in ya. (skip adding to water...consume 1x coffee packet and 1x whitener.)

Trust me man, It took me 6 years of field time to figure these things out. I know it doesn't seem like rocket science when you have a warm arse. But once the snivelling kicks in, you'll be the most hardcore FNG in your whole section.

Watch them squirm with the coffee thing.

I opened them up since I had to take out the crap to get as much free space as possible in my rucksack for all the kit they are making us bring.

They look pretty cool. I look forward to eating them then submitting a thorough review to my local paper.

Anyways... gotta get up at like 4:45 tomorrow.

Seconded, half of my food was the bags of granola and energy bars people left at each camp.

Did you ever have the Hawaiian Chicken?

Carl, keep the gum and candy bar...they make good bartering tools.

Also, if you have extra, keep em. I've got a few boxes of rats i the garage for those "owe money to the mob" days where I can't afford real food.

Well there's a couple of differing opinions.

The later MRE's weren't to bad, but the early ones left a lot to be desired.  Hence the saying that MRE = Meals Refused by Everybody.  The early ones were however an improvement on C-rats.  Anyway, even with the the improvements most of the people I knew still considered MRE (when applied to the later meals) to stand for Meals Refusing to Exit.

Plus it's good to scrounge a few extras of the ones that
you decide you really like, as a hedge against the day
where the IMP fairy hands you nine meals' worth of crap
that you can't stand. I try to always have a couple
sausage and hash browns in reserve and something with
chicken.

The MRE's these days really aren't that bad, they come with heaters and everything.

The chicken with noodles literally taste like something close to progresso.  I'm not complaining when I've seen what the old one's look like, lol.

I had a pretty good weekend.

We did a whole bunch of stuff including training, and obstacle course and ruck marches. We also spent some time on the rappel tower including the helicopter rappel tower which was really cool.

It was challenging to make out hitches at night in full blackness especially when your fireteam buddy doesn't speak your language. Cool though, we got woken up repeatedly by arty sims followed by ten minutes of machine gun fire. (though I bet it will be less cool this summer when I am the one who has to get up and react to it)

The imp's were pretty good.

First was the chicken szechwan which was somewhat crappy but more than edible. Breakfast ended up being sausages and hash browns which tasted more like potato and sausage stew. Breakfast was the worst but it was far from bad. I really liked the chicken for lunch. The best parts of them were the extra stuff though the rice was pretty bad. (oatmeal was awesome)

All in all, a really fun weekend.

LOL. Cute.

Trust me, when suddenly it's *your* course being woken
up by arty sims and raids, it starts to suck. Especially
the fighting withdrawals and then the march to a new
position, where you get to dig all those nice trenches
all over again.

I had the Shepherd's Pie IMP for lunch yesterday (2007
series). I give it a thumbs up, with the included salt
and ketchup.

Another bit of advice- keep a plain plastic water bottle
with you for mixing the juice out of the IMPs. You
don't want to mix it in your canteen and have it go
skunky on you. Trust me. Bottled water in general is
awesome, hoard as much of it as you can.
