Without having a repeat of 2005: In early 2000's they were one of the most popular bands. Whether you think they were good or not, you can't deny the fact that they were popular. Nah, I'm pretty sure that socialism isn't hated in the same bandwagon-style that capitalism is these days. Just look at college campuses, the only places where idolizing Marx, Che, and Fidel would ever get you chicks outside of a Com-Bloc reunion. Professing an interest in socialism while in college is about like smoking a lot of pot in college. I was thinking of the current presidential campaign, where "socialism" is being tossed around as an insult by people who have no understanding of the term. In college, I agree that capitalism is the standard scapegoat. Brilliant college post. Brilliant. But - for small schools, I think it can be even easier. Simple "peacocking" of any kind will work. Make yourself "different" in some non-disgusting way, strut about with great confidence, and good things will follow. Become "the guy who ___". Liberal arts schools are full of people trying to "find themselves" and suffering from severe confidence issues. Holy Crap. You just described everyone at SUNY Purchase in NY. Its a HUGE LA college. I went to visit a few friends of mine there and thought I was going to be killed. One of my friends was dating an exact replica of the guy you described and while he was going off on an anti-capitalist anti America stint, the filter between my brain and my mouth short circuited and I laughed, not the polite "I'm pretending to care" chuckle...no....it was a good old fashioned "You're dumb" guffaw. ....that one little maneuver on my part was paramount to tossing a cat into a packed hen house. I never knew they took themselves so seriously. I took the bus home early the next morning.  ------------- ? |
