So I've been wanting to play WoW for a long time. I guess finding a private server would solve the unwillingness to pay for a monthly subscription, but I honestly don't know how to go about finding a private server...

Anyway, I was just looking over WoW's website. Holy. Freaking. Gawd. TOO much stuff. I have no idea where to start! Jeez, I don't even know what I want to do. Right now, it's kind of a tie between offensive magic (like a mage or a warlock) or brute force kind of things. What do you guys like doing?

So yeah. World of Warcraft is a bit too big for me. Thoughts? Tips? Suggestions?

Yes, play.  I played for a few months and it was a blast.  Finally, I got too busy and had too little time to play to justify the $15 a month.

I was a Undead rogue.  Right before I quit, I made a Blood Elf pally (or hunter, don't remember), but didn't get anywhere with it.

from my personal experience, having never played it but similarly addictive games, don't get into it. it becomes...well i'll finish this one quest and then i'll be done for the night...and a few hours later you've gone no where.

GI Joe: Well, I'm concerned about that as well, but the MMORPG's that I've played have failed to hold my interest, all the way from Runescape to Ragnarok to Dream of Mirror Online. I've heard good things about WoW, so I want to get a free demo to try it out. If it totally freakin' rocks, I may buy a month and go from there.

On that note, if you don't pay, does your account go away? Or do they "hold" it until you pay again? I'd much rather find a private server, but if I enjoy it enough, who knows...

I'm going to make a different recommendation and suggest Warhammer Online instead of WoW. The PvP/RvR elements are fantastic as well as PvE.  Not to mention the game is relatively new so your not that far behind.

Last I heard, they hold your account for an indefinite period of time. I played alot for about 6 months, got distracted by a shiny object one day and quit for a while, came back after about 6 months and it's all still there. I had forgotten the fine details of how my undead warlock worked so I created an undead mage and only got to about lvl 13 before quiting again, lol.

I'm looking at an Undead Warlock. Zombies rule, and summoning demons rules. But I also like offensive magic, so I'm toying with the idea of being a Mage too.

On that note: CURSE YOU VILE INTERNET!!! I'm DLing the 10 day demo: "7 hours remaining." Crap. I wanted to play tonight. :'(

private servers are rather pointless. You miss out on the sense of accomplishment when you actually earn things. When the server admin can just push a button, and do everything instantly.

How does the trial CD's work? Are they the full game for only a few days? I'm downloading the 10 day trial from Blizzard's site right now, but I don't know how extensive it is. It says it's only a trial account, meaning (I assume) that when the 10 days are gone, my account goes bye-bye. Will the trial CD key let me upgrade it to a full-fledged account for a limited time or something?

As can they on regular servers but they don't if you are on a good private server.

Why don't I get a sense of accoplishment by earning things on private servers?

The majority of private servers that I have been on have been better than the blizard servers.

Reb Cpl: The similarities to warcraft 2 are what drew me to wow in the first place.

GI joes son: No, just no

Also, wahammer online will die quickly with the majority of other games that are so similar to wow. Not worth the investment imo. (until warhamer 40K online comes out anyways...)

Rogues are a lot of fun to play.

I wouldn't really suggest picking a hunter. I played
one to 70, and for quite some time after, and I'm not a
huge fan anymore.

Ret Paladins are a blast to play as well.

For some reason, I'd always get sick of playing my rogue. Same with hunters. I've had a lot of fun with my mage.

Basically for mages, you can do a lot of damage, but don't have high armor or stamina, though you can get pretty good damage mitigation depending on how you spec.

Frost = Good damage mitigation, survivability and slowing, decent damage, decent mana efficiency
Fire   = Low damage mitigation, high damage output, high mana efficiency, good sustained DPS
Arcane = Low mana efficiency, very high burst damage (not very high sustained DPS), medium surviability/mitigation

Right now my mage is arcane, I'm sitting at around 1000 spell power in PvP gear, and I'm wrecking people. It's great. Mages are a cool class. I've been playing one for nearly 2 years, and I don't really get sick of it ever.

I'm probably going to level and gear my Paladin first in WotLK because I'm loving prot so much now.

That's an interesting statement, considering WoW was very simliar to Everquest when it was realeased. WoW was sucessful for a mix of reasons though: It came right at the decline of Everquest; It offered much easier, forgiving gameplay; and it brought along a number of new feautres and concepts, such as refined PvE and UI.  Theres no denying that WoW has changed the MMO market drastically since its relase, the same as Everquest had before it, and even Ultima Online before EQ.  So we'll see ;)

It was definitely an interesting move to go against WoW with Warhammer. The Warcraft storyline is a direct ripoff of the Warhammer story line, but the Warhammer MMO will utilize many concepts developed with WoW. The game was released at the perfect time however, WoW is on its decline now, regardless of what players want to think.  WAR is bringing a drastically updated PvP system with it as well, implementing refined scenario play as well as adding really fun new elements, such as keep and city seiges, and world-wide Realm vs. Realm play. Almost all the high rank WoW guilds have either made a complete switch to Warhammer or have opened guilds there as well.

Although I still wish Vanguard didn't tank, that was a beautiful game

Anyway, Detrev, seriously, check out Warhammer before you make up your mind, its a bloody fun game.

Heh. I doubt WoW is on the decline at all with this newest patch and the expansion coming out. I've never seen so many people online as I have lately. All kinds of my old friends that quit are coming back. Warhammer isn't the "WoW-killer" everyone said it would be.

I think part of the huge popularity of WoW lies in the relatively modest system requirements by today's standards. You don't need a massive machine to run it, making it very popular with the average user.

Not surprised at all that you play Eve, Enos.

Good game.

I don't think anyone expected Warhammer Online to kill WoW...it's only been out for like a month, hasn't it?

Either way, there's no way Blizzard is going to lose it's market fast.  They are probably the best creators of addict-centric computer games (examples being all the Diablo games, Starcraft, and all the Warcraft games; essentially every game they've made.  Seriously, how many companies can say people play their games to death, literally?).

My brother is addicted to that game (although he plays less now because he prefers Warhammer ). I never had the patience.

Benji, I may have misused decline, my point is that its golden age is over.  I'm sure WoW will maintain a huge fanbase for a long while to come, after all look at Everquest which still boasts impressive subscriber rates and frequent expansions. Many players are looking for the next game, and it may be Warhammer or it may not be.  Its too soon to tell if WAR will be the WoW killer, after all it took WoW longer then just a month to pick up its vast fanbase.

It will pass, I'm not sure  if you played pre-bc, but pre-bc it was the same thing, as soon as they released all the new content, the numbers on servers skyrocketed and stayed high, server queue's to get on and such, although about a month after BC actual release, the numbers went down a bit, so I'm sure the same thing will happen with wotlk.

When your ship blows up you get ejected in an escape pod. Only if your pod gets blown up do you lose your skills. It is generally considered very rude to blow up a pod.  If anyone gets into playing much, PM me or Enos and we will tell you how to join our corp.
