Though I love war, obama being elected president is really good for America... especially for the world's opinions of America.

Absolutely. I've been an Obama supporter from the beginning, but seeing John say the things he said made me proud to have had him running, and working with Obama in the senate.

I'm so incredibly happy right now. For the nation as a whole, and the great victory for African Americans.

What an amazing time in history.

QFT. That's the best speech I've heard from him. Apparently, from what I've been hearing, that's the real McCain, and that's how he acts/speaks everyday. Too bad he couldn't show that side of himself while he was campaigning.

Well, he's still not our president yet... you have to deal with a republican for the next 3 months who can do whatever the hell he wants now.

"Not my president"

I doubt many people actually believed that.

No.  This girl believed that.  Trust me.

This girl once told me you could see fairies on the night of a full moon, if you looked through the eye of a needle at them, and that you would get sick if you left water by your bedside overnight and drank it in the morning, because the devil would send demons to get into your water, and they're what makes you sick.

She believed it.

And as much as I hate to say it, my mom did too.  She kept forwarding all the stupid "Obama is bad" e-mails to me, but if I sent her anything about McCain, she would send me back the link to Snopes that rebutted everything.

F/E certainly can suck it, but none the less, this isn't going to turn out nearly as well as everyone seems to think it will. The Democrats now have an undisputed run of government for the next 4 years. FSM help us all......

Obama I would have been fine with, but the establishment of a Democrat-majority senate and house with Pelosi and Reid in charge and Obama ready to sign whatever they want into law is scary. You should all be very, very wary.

I'll be curious to see how the continued issue of his
actual place of birth plays out... He skated over that
one pretty constantly, and now legislation's been
introduced to mandate that presidents prove their place
of birth.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy Obama won- but this
doesn't negate a potentially important constitutional
issue that still needs to be looked into.

I fear for my future in this nation. That being said, I will follow my president the hell and back because I love this nation, and the freedoms it allows me.

As a student right now I should probably be rejoicing, but as a future working man, I can only hope that the economic decisions made by the next president of the United States do not screw me to the point that I can no longer afford to live in my most favorite of nations.

I also find it very uncouth that even after a win, some people find it neccissary to dog on the losers of the race.

I was around a mostly liberal group when the news broke, and it seemed all they could say was how odd it was that the "maverick" lost. Way to be a gracious winner. (by no means is this a reflection on all democrats btw, however it has shown on this forum already).

But everyone whether winner or loser, we must remember that this is the UNITED States of America, and we should act as such.

Good election everyone, and I hope that the nation has truely picked the best candidate for the job.

Not my personal choice, however, as with President Bush before him, I will support President Obama despite where our views will differ.

I think both McCain and Obama's speeches were perfect for America and a bit of what we really need right now: Unity.

That being said, I do worry about this democratic super majority in the house, senate and white house.  Whats more worrisome is no one at my school finds this a bad thing, and instead they think its great.

On the whole, I'm pleased that the American attitude looks to be shifting slowly towards bipartisanship and we can only hope that this trend continues.

I think a lot of that branches of several people in our generation just not believing our form of Government as much as we used to.

A super majority in the house, senate, and white house is far from a democracy, and that might be why so many people our age are excited about it. It allows us the opportunity to experiment with a system in which there are less checks and balances in the party, but the people's opinions and beliefs still play a critical role in the decisions being made.

I'm sorry but that's about the dumbest rationalization I've heard.

We now have the single most liberal presidential elect, with some very liberal heads of congress, and you're not worried that half the country is getting the shaft at a time like this in the US?

My only consolation is the Supreme Court in major cases.

I don't buy it. I think that we're in for major 'change' to use President-elect Obama's own words- now only politically, but constitutionally. A super majority will practically have the authority to mold and 'fix' the constitution to their ideals, with no consequence.

The only thing that could 'put this country back together' would be a moderate who is willing to cross party lines in the white house. He (or she) wouldn't be aligned to stringent party affiliations, which would hamper one sided politics- the torpedo to our national ship.

It'll never happen though. You're either right, left, or not in office.

God I hope not.... Romney is a polarizing figure within his own party, let alone in a multi-party election system. The reason that McCain did not win this election is that the Republican Party is no longer seen as the "Party of Reagan." It is seen as a party that only exists to bring power to its members and benefit it's benefactors. The only hope for a balanced government over the next four years is for the Republican Party to put forth moderate candidates for the senate races coming up in 2010 and 2012.

As for The Dude's thoughts on experimentation and the lack of checks and balances. That's exactly what got us here in the first place. Doing more of the same won't get us back to a better standing.

That seems unlikely.  Justices, Roberts, Alito, Scalia, and Thomas are showing no signs of slowing down.  Scalia is the oldest, and he has a lot of juice left in him.

We'll see some replacements on the left side of the court, but I would not expect that balance to shift significantly.

I'm ignorant. What is your doom and gloom hypothesis as to why this majority is a bad thing?

May I ask if you would still consider it to be the potential for progress if McCain had won, and had a Republican-controlled House and Senate?

There is good reason to believe that George W. Bush could go down in history, at least in the political theory circles, as one of the worst presidents we have ever had in charge of the country.

Exactly.  Also, someone needs to look up the word "exaggeration".

I'm getting sick of everyones myspace and facebook bulletins and what not about the election.  I'm pretty that like 99% of my friends have no idea what they're talking about.

Oh well, I guess thats what you get for having a myspace/facebook.

What?

You actually think one party having a super majority in congress AND the presidency is GOOD for America?
69 of the past 110 sessions of congress have been single party rule

doesn't negate a potentially important constitutional
issue that still needs to be looked into.
Ummm, this is a question? He was born in Hawaii, there are multiple copies of his records available

That seems unlikely. Justices, Roberts, Alito, Scalia, and Thomas are showing no signs of slowing down. Scalia is the oldest, and he has a lot of juice left in him.

We'll see some replacements on the left side of the court, but I would not expect that balance to shift significantly.

Truth, lord knows Scalia will hang on as long as he can just to avoid being replaced by a dem (probably what stevens has been doing)

What has been publicly released is a 'certificate of
live birth' for the state of Hawaii, which is drawn up
simply based on the word of the parents. It is NOT the
same as a legal birth certificate, which Hawaii says it
has on file, but which has not been released.

Look into the history of Obama's father and some of the
issues surrounding Indonesian citizenship and the couple
of marriages he was in. Furthermore, members of his
family in Kenya are on record as stating that he was
born there. There's enough that's come out to suggest
the *possibility* that Obama may not be U.S. born that
it's worth looking into, if only to protect the intent
of the constitution.

I have no doubt that Obama will prove to be a fit
leader- but at the same time he has sworn and will swear
again to uphold and defend the constitution, and so he
should show no reticence whatsoever (as he has thus far)
to release all documentation proving his birth.

Of course, with a democratic supermajority I suspect the
proposed legislation mandating that Presidential
candidates submit an affidavit with documentation
proving their place of birth will quickly flounder. The
legislation is, obviously, partisan motivated- but at
the same time I don't personally think it's
unreasonable.

Not so much.

I have never seen the big deal about the flag pin.  No one should be expected to wear one to prove their loyalty to the nation.  Expecting someone to do so is as incorrect as the loyalty oaths that were so popular during WW2*.

*Actually, http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2008/05/02/8675 - they're still around in some places.

I'm sorry but that's about the dumbest rationalization I've heard.

I didn't realize open-mindedness towards a new age in American history was considered "dumb".

This is still an incredibly young country, we still have a lot of growing and evolving to do. To deny that would just be plain ignorant. And you don't strike me as ignorant, just incredibly rude.
