Oh, it's very verboten. About once a month we'll have a unit BBQ where we get a whole two bottles of beer per person, that's it. Undoubtedly some people are able to get some liquor mailed to them surreptitiously, but if the postal guys catch it they confiscate it. The soldier doesn't get in any crap when that happens, but the booze is gone. I heard of an amusing instance in which the posties opened a package, confiscated a metal Vodka bottle, but somehow missed the second glass bottle in the same package. Pretty impressive fail. I think they only open the packages if they see something suspicious on the xrays. Fortunately, in a mere 18 days I start my mid-deployment leave. Three weeks in New Zealand.  I will drink til

I'll be going home at the end of this anyway. This mid-tour break gives me a great chance to go to a part of the world I otherwise wouldn't have the time, opportunity, or money to go visit but that I've always wanted to see. Kind of a Carpe Diem sort of thing that me and a couple buddies are doing. The GF has real life kicking her hard in the face right now and doesn't need the added distraction of me being around while she tries to get everything figured out with regards to moving, a career and all that, and I didn't want to have to go through all the painful goodbyes again. Besides, I wouldn't be able to properly enjoy being at home if I was just counting down the days to coming back here. As for the folks, we waited for my dad for a year while he was in Cambodia, six months in Bosnia, and a year in Israel, and I've been at home waiting for my stepmom through two six month stints in Afghanistan.
