Not really.  Last night I was looking for free TV shows online when I got bumrushed with Trojans and crap.  After quite some time, I was finally able to run Ad-aware, Spybot and Avast.  All of which found some stuff.  Now my computer seems to be running fine, except for Firefox.  At first, it would crash right after bringing it up, but now it only crashes every now and then.  And for some reason, it crashes immediately everytime I go to ctrlaltdel-online.com.  Are there more/better programs out there that I need to run?

Edit*  Well after a little more trial, it crashes on damn near every site I go to.  I guess I got lucky and it will keep this one up.

I may have fixed the problem myself anyway.  Avast spoiled me into thinking every program like that constantly updates their definitions and what not.  Apparently Spybot does not.  I updated them and ran it again and so far it has picked up much, much more.

Edit*  Well, while it did find an extra 25 entries, my browser still crashes upon visiting select sites.

Printer, photoshop, itunes, ect ect.

I know the latter two can sometimes be handled through wine, I never had any luck with it.

depending on what your using it for - have you tried gimp/gimpshop?

and seriously, amarok > itunes :)

Oh, it broke my heart when I decided to switch back to Windows and had to switch back to iTunes.

Yeah, I tried gimp for a little while, but it didn't have my brushes or fonts.  I realize I could have gotten some specifically for gimp, but I am lazy.  That and I am resistant to change.  I know my way around photoshop fairly well and I really don't care to re-learn a similar program.

Hysteria,

Since you're running Spybot, did you use the "immunize" feature?  If not, try using it, then running another sweep.  If you still have problems, you may have to reload/update Firefox.  (My guess is you still have some sort of malware; I run Spybot with Firefox with no problems what-so-ever.)

You might also try downloading/running the free version of AVG.

Nope.  Immunized and reinstalled, but still nothing.  Is AVG better than Avast?  I've heard they are about the same.

Photoshop CS2 runs flawlessly in wine. When I say flawlessly, I mean it too.

If anything I'd say Avast! is better than AVG.

Try MalwareBytes Anti Malware or use one of the many online virus scanners. I'd try kaspersky.

Does this happen when you try using IE or any other browser?

I've been running AVG free, Adaware, and Spybot for years now and have never had a crippling piece of malware on any of my computers and rarely had anything more than tracking cookies make it onto my system. AVG has pretty good real-time protection and has saved me from a few infections over the years. I keep them all updated and run scans every 2 weeks or so, never have any issues. I used to run ZoneAlarm too but it got annoying after a while so I just use the windows firewall now. Malwarebytes and Avast are supposed to be good but I personally wouldn't trade my 3 for those until I see them blocking more stuff or providing some other benefit over what I have. I fix computers for people all the time and 90% of the problems are related to malware. I've had computers with Norton/McAfee suites, Malwarebytes, Avast, and other security programs that still managed to get taken down by malware. I usually install my 3 programs to clean it up and then leave them in place. So far I haven't had anybody come back with problems. In defense of those other programs though, the infections may have just been caused by laziness/lack of maintenance from the users. I can tell they don't update anything and rarely if ever scan for stuff.

Also, I absolutely despise Norton/McAfee products. In my experience, they are complete crap. I fixed a few computers this week that were having trouble getting online. They were either only able to get online through IE or not at all and the system was sluggish. The problem persisted no matter how clean I got the OS. You know what it ended up being? The very security suite that was on there to protect the system, Norton Internet Security. I tried to get rid of it using the uninstaller which partially worked but failed to remove a ton of stuff. I looked at the registry and it had keys all over the place, it was a disaster. I deleted the ones I found but there were so many I decided to just search for a quicker fix and luckily Symantec had a small application for just that. Downloaded it, ran it, and it cleaned up the registry. And just like that, all the problems were gone. In all honesty, I think it's worse than most malware I come across, especially because you don't expect it to be the source of the problems.

QFT

(I run Spybot and AVG free and have never had any problems.  You wouldn't believe the amount of stuff that the two found when I started using them instead of Norton and Spysweeper.)

Haha, yeah, it had to be done. I had a link to my company site in there but the mods requested I take it down, I guess in an effort to fight spammers leading you off this site or something. That happened to be right after that wonderful conversation so I figured, why not.
Got cut off due to character limits though.

So Windows finally crapped out on me.  It wouldn't load anything so I tried to schedule a bootup scan with Avast.  When it restarted, nothing would come up.  I left it there for like 20 minutes and nothing.  I finally decided to do a massive overhaul of my computer and reinstall Windows and upgrade to 8.10 with Ubuntu.  But, since I can't get Windows to pull up, I need to get some stuff off there some other way.  I booted into Ubuntu and tried to access my Windows partition, but it is nowhere to be found.  I used to have an icon on my desktop, but it isn't there.  Is there any other way to access my Windows partition through Ubuntu?

try opening the partition editor, it may "find" your drive after that

if that doesnt do it, open up a console and type:

cd /dev
dir | grep sd

you should get an entry along the lines of "sda1" or "sdb1" etc.

sudo mount /dev/sda1 (or sdb1, whatever you found in /dev)

if it says it cant find /dev/sda1 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab then type

sudo nano /etc/fstab

and copy this line in there

/dev/sda1       /mnt/sda1       ntfs   er rors=r emount -ro 0       1

note: you can switch "/mnt/sda1" to any folder, but it does have to exist or you'll have to make it or you'll get an error.

and then try to mount it again.

I tried everything you suggested, to no avail.  I ended up booting up from the live disk which found the partition.  But when I tried to mount it, it came up with a long ass error:

"$LogFile indicates unclean shutdown(0,0) Failed to mount '/dev/hda4': Operation not supported Mount is denied because NTFS is marked to be in use.  Choose oen action:  Choice 1: If you have windows then disconnect the external devices by clicking on the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon in the Windows taskbar then shutdown windows cleanly.  Choice 2:  If you don't have Windows then you can use the 'force' option for your own responsiility.  For example type on the command line: mount -t ntfs-3g/dev/hda4/media/disk -1 -o force or add the option to the relavent row in the /etc/fstab file: /dev/hda4/media/disk -1 ntfs-3g force 0 0"

So, should I force it?  That doesn't sound too safe.

Well after googling a bit, I found that forcing it was pretty much the only option I had.  It worked and now I can finally back up all my data and give my computer a massive overhaul.  Thanks for the help.
