That is because the real price of your ticket will be the hike in your insurance rate.

They are going nutz with driving laws up here now. If you get caught speeding and you are under 21, your license gets like suspended for 30 days. And getting caught without a seat belt is like $1000 ticket.

20+ tends to be mandatory court date, so you'll have to show up anyhow to pay it.

I believe here in MO 15 over is considered a felony.

an attorney will get it reduced to something like excessive exhaust noise so that it will stay off your record, you wont get any points on your license, and your insurance wont go up.
this will also make your ticket itself more expensive as well. (least it does around here.)

Speeding laws vary GREATLY state by state, do your own research on it. A Google search can yield good results, just double check them.
Talk to friends, family, or neighbors. Ask them what they did when they got a speeding ticket. A lawyer, I feel personally, is unnecessary for a traffic ticket. If you do take it to court, dress very nicely, remember to answer any question the prosecutor or Judge asks with either a yes sir or no sir. DON'T give any unnecessary details about the stop.

Me and my friend got pulled over for 83 in a 55 in CT coming back from a concert. She showed some cleave, and when the cop came back with the ticket, he was like the speeding ticket would have been ~$350, but I put you down for obstructed vision (graduation tassels on the mirror) which was a $75 ticket. Dye, I don't know if you're at all familiar with the new laws that took place August 1 around here now, but 20 over is now reckless driving and kids our age can get their licenses suspended.
Moral #3: Keep it at 19 over in high risk areas.

I heard about that, but she is like 19 I think. It was a younger cop (probably under 25) and she is legit smokin. When she saw the lights she freaked out and was like "what should I do" I told her straight up...smoosh your boobs and look like your going to cry, and sure enough the cop didn't give her the ticket lol.

Going almost thirty over is borderline retarded, just to start off.
Don't play the poor college student act, because the first thing out of the judge's mouth will be that you wouldn't be risking a 500 dollar + ticket if you couldn't afford the consequences.
With that said, depends on your state laws. Here in VA, fifteen over is a reckless, which sucks, hard. Pay the fine, walk in with your tail in between your legs, and pray for the best.

I know speedings bad which is why I never do it in traffic.
Im thinking about just going in there and seeing what happens and as long as I come out with my license I'll be happy, otherwise I'll probably ask for a continuance and hire an attorney.

Hey!
Yeah...in MI, my license was on probation for 5 years, during that time I got put onto restriction once and suspension twice.
Worst ticket I ever got surprisingly was only 92/70 but that was along side SEVERAL other violations...90% of which were for speeding.
And in SC, I did good for a while...but after being down here now for 10 months, I knew that the inevitable was bound to happen sooner or later...unfortunately, it happened sooner...not later.
But the cop was cool...didn't give me half the tickets he could have...if he would have done what the "book" says to do...I would have been arrested for sure.
I only got 2 tickets, one was a reduced 10 over ticket, and the other being for my expired michigan tags/plate.
He didn't hit me for not having valid insurance, not having valid registration, no seat belt, open containers, and actually doing 23 over.
Although my court date for those ones is Dec. 11...so I'm hoping to being able to wiggle my way out of something there.

I just got a speeding ticket too. I was back to school at 7am and I got pulled over for doing 83 in a 70. Hardly anyone was on the road at that time.
The court date is optional for me. If I mail the ticket in, its $120 or $140...don't remember which one.

My first ticket was in a jeep I bought. I got a temporary 10 day permit, but forgot to take the registration papers and got a ticket for driving through a city park (which was covered in snow at the time). I had to stay in the little tiny jail until my buddy brought the papers from the dealer to prove I owned it.

in ny its acceptable to do 70 on the 55 highways in the left lane pretty much...anything over that and the cops aren't going to be happy...
you have up to 30 over the limit before you have to go to court, but even at 30 over you're getting a hell of a fine and points...31 or more over and its an automatic court date, and you better have had a bleeding victim in your car rushing to the hospital, otherwise you're getting your lisence suspended...where i am anyway...most other places you can plea bargain it down to a parking violation or something

I've found that to vary depending where you are in the state and depending on the road you're on. We've got a pretty well traveled main artery that cuts through my town posted at 55, if you hit 70 on it you're in it deep.
I've never been pulled over for speeding, that's partially because I follow a pretty simple rule: "No more than 10 over"
In a posted 30 zone, it's low for a reason. 15 or 20 over makes you a moron.
In a posted 65, 10 over is 75 (math yay!) and if you need to go faster than that consistantly, you're one of those people I hope drops a drive shaft on the highway- you make it dangerous for the rest of us.

Hey!
I can't say I know how it is in NC...I'm in SC...but don't have any court experiece...yet...lol...1 more week
But I know in MI, you get a ticket and have so many days to go to the court and either pay the fine or tell them that you'd like to contest the ticket/s, so then you get another month or so until the court date to contest the ticket, at which point, if you're convicted, you have another month or so to pay the fine.
If paying the ticket is the problem, just talk to the judge/magistrate about maybe getting extra time to pay or setting up payment arrangments...as long as you're professionally mannered and don't act like some arrogant kid, they'll usually work something out with you.
Getting a lawyer for a minor traffic ticket is usually pretty assanine, they cost more than the ticket itself...and 1 ticket isn't going to hike your insurance rates way up...the main thing insurance companies look for are accidents and major/numerous traffic violations.
Take me for example...I pay $130-$150 a month for just liability coverage(PLPD)...but I currently have 1 accident and a lot of speeding tickets that are still affecting my insurance rates...I just got another set of tickets and my insurance company just sent me a letter saying that my rate was being reduced because I've been with them for so long.
All in all...don't freak out over 1 ticket, you'll be alright.

Yeah...where do you live?
And bounty...I have court dates on the two tickets I just got but I do not have to go...and this was also the first time the cost of each ticket was written on the ticket...they don't do that in MI.
If you just want to pay it and be done with it, just call up the PD that gave you the ticket and ask them how much it is and where to go to pay it...ok...if you have to go to court, they'll tell you when you call...just make sure that whatever you do, you don't do it late(after the court date) because that's when your license will get suspended and you'll probably have a bench warrant issued for you.

Ah yes...I did read that somewhere...but yeah...they tend to frown upon 27 over...hehe...I doubt they'll suspend you...but I don't know how old you are so...because ususally if you've only had your license for a year or two...a ticket like that could result in a suspension or perhaps just restriction, but like I said before just don't act arrogant...don't make up stupid excuses...they've heard them all before and won't buy into them.
From my experiences...just apologize, say you were being stupid and you have definately learned a valuable and expensive lesson, and also, like I already mentioned, it can't hurt to at least ask for extra time to pay, or even to negotiate a reduced sentence.
Tell them that you don't mind paying the fines but don't want any points or at least not that many...a lot of times they'll give you a higher fine but less/no points, especially since you have no prior moving violations.
But other than that my man...just take it as it comes, it's not that big of a deal, it's not like you got a DUI or something, this will come to pass and a year from now, you'll look back and laugh with your buddies about the whole thing.

Please, Im not that stupid. I was the only car on a 2 lane divided highway, kids that cut people off and think its cool to speed through traffic piss me off too.

in ny its acceptable to do 70 on the 55 highways in the left lane pretty much...anything over that and the cops aren't going to be happy...

15 or 20 over makes you a moron.

| on the thru way i can see why because its poorly lit and its harder to see at night, but on the LIE its pretty well lit and with really no curves so going a little faster isn't really frowned upon
i know what you mean about the 30 zones, i usually go 25 in them...i'd feel horrible knowing i hit a kid bc i was speeding in a neighborhood

On the beltway, where I think the speed limit is 55 or 60, the flow of traffic is consistently 80, with cars going 90-100 all the time speeding by. It's pretty bad.

I wasn't aware there WAS a speed limit on 495 (LIE) I've traveled a lot of the major highways in this country, and the LIE it the only one that truly scares me. The people that use regularly have no regard for human life.
I saw an breakdown in the right hand lane, but didn't notice it until we were RIGHT on top of it.....there wasn't a brake light to be seen as these cretins slammed around that poor bastard at 80-85 miles an hour.
No thank you.

Congrats on the reduction. I got my $700 in tickets and suspended liscense reduced to nuttin for driving with no insurance, no tags and no registration when I went to court. I may or may not have made a deal with God, made eye water and showed some skin to the judge.
...and no north crackton isn't alright. But they do clean the bodies up quickly when you call about the mess.

Note to others who may wish to try Johnny's technique for mitigating tickets: It is very important to understand that when he said he "showed some skin" to the judge, he was making a sexual reference; not referring to his skin hat collection.
