I wanted to get my parents some Wine for Christmas. It seemed like an easy and fairly cheap gift for the both of them. The only problem is that I don't know anything about wine. I was thinking a bottle around $30-40. Is that a reasonable amount for a decent bottle? Any suggestions? |

Is that the stuff that actually comes in a bag, but its boxed and attached to some sort of spout? |

Depends on what they like or what kind of food they usually eat with wine. I actually just went to a wine tasting thing for work. Pretty informative. A good safe bet that is normally overlooked is Pinot Noir. It's a light red that goes well with just about anything. For $30-$40 you can get a decent wine. The closest Whole Food store is an hour away. I'll keep it in mind, hopefully a store closer than that will sell it. |

Oh, any wine shop that doesn't have a sign outside that says "Thugz Wine and Likker" will have a C-N-P, but the price range may be a bit higher. usually, you can find a good one in the grocery store or any normal wine shop. For alternatives, I'd suggest: Reds: Vintner | Region/Name | Varietal Ridge York Creek Zinfandel Saintsbury Pinot Noir Red and Green Russian River Zinfandel Niebaum-Coppola Cabernet Franc Iron Horse Russian Cuvee Brut Sparkling Wine OR! You can get them 3 nice reds for ~$40 total I suggest: Candor Zinfandel Berringer Pinot Noir Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon For whites, I like the following: Chalk Hill Chardonnay Caymus Connundrum Trimbach Gewurztraminer ------------- <Removed overly wide sig. I'd highly recommend a nice garlic-rubbed thirty-two day dry-aged NY Strip steak grilled to perfection over oak wood with pommes dauphinoise, sauteed haricots verts and finished with sauce financier. ------------- <Removed overly wide sig. If they like pinot noir's 2 very good ones are "Angeline" and "Cartlidge & Browne" Both received high marks from wine tasters and they are 2 of my favorites. Also if they enjoy the white wnies more so a good chardonay is "La Crema" As for something a little harder hitting a good meritage is "Pilar Box" (its not in a box just the name of it). Personally I love wine so I will gladly help you out on this one. Here is the link to a good site for it that includes a list of wines that scored 90 points or better (out of 100) that are under 20 bucks. If I bought my parents a $40 bottle of wine, and we weren't at a restaurant (well, ignoring that fact that it would be illegal), they would shoot me. My parents normally go through two bottles or so of wine every week, and rarely spend more than $15-$20. ------------- BU Engineering 2012 |
