So, the missus and I are going ice skating for the first time in 15 years. I never skated much as a kid, but add in 15 years of not doing it and I seem to have forgotten one very important thing. How do you stop? Aside from falling on your ass, running into someone/thing, and I'm not even going to try a hockey-stop thankyouverymuch. Simple, easy to use instructions would be nice.

Yeah, that ain't gonna work well here bub. They tend to kick you out if you do that too much.

balance on one skate and put your other foot horizontally at the back of the foot with your weight on it making a T. Just make sure to have the blade you drag behind your foot with the weight on it.
Drag the back blade across the ice

Outdoor or indoor?
If it's indoor, it's easy, just hit the wall. If outdoor, do the V thing.

Thank you!!!! That's how I used to do it. I couldn't remember if I dragged the whole blade or just the tip with the little saw-edged portions.
And all my American friends told me it was dumb to have Canadian buddies online....

I do a few really tight turns until I HAVE to lift my foot. By the time I gain my balance, I am stopped.

You can make the T style stop, or you can do a very similar thing and just run the nose of the rear skate behind you.
It doesn't stop you quite as fast, but there is less chance of it ending up in a splits. While it does obviously work better with figure style skates with the teeth on the front, there is nothing stopping you doing it with hockey style skates.
Good luck, and remember to enjoy falling over. It is part of the fun :)

i do a little 360 to stop. im not really sure how i do it, i think i just put one skate slight in front of the other then turn really sharp with it and turn not so sharp with my rear skate. maybe. all i know is that i do a 360, and then i am not moving anymore. ive only skated like twice so thats the best i can do.

When I was growing up, hockey skates were rare in my town. All they rented at the rink were figure-skate style skates. I had my dad's old pair from the 1960's.

Exactly what I was going to say. I used to have a skating rink in my yard when I was a kid, good times.

For the last 4 years, my wife and I have gone skating at a rink near her every now and again. I've never, ever stopped properly. I always used a wall.

Oh come on, you can't say that. Hockey stops require a sense of balance that you don't just lace up your skates and acquire. It takes quite a bit of practice and time on the ice to get a feel for.

Listen, not all of us were forced grow up drinking Moose-head while shooting at abandoned campers and eating mayonnaise on our french-fries instead of ketchup. Some of us got the chance to grow up where breakfast isn't just for breakfast, moonshine isn't something you look up in the sky for, and there was little to no chance to play hockey, let alone find some hockey skates. I'll take the moonshine and biscuits and gravy over growing up with hockey skates any day.... ya hoser!

Mayo on fries is way more euro than canadian, and I'm from the Yukon, I have most certainly encountered home made moonshine in a mason jar. Also, Denny's is a great after bar restaurant for some 3am waffles.
Other than that....true.....

moose head is a pretty widely distributed beer.
I also use figure skates, they are way more comfortable. that could just be because the hockey skates for rent are trashed.
