Subject: Self defense question

In b4 CCW.

Long story short, neighbor is posing a possible threat, possibly involving others to join his threat.

Now, this could all well blow over in a month or two when the nieghbor is evicted, but regardless I still feel somewhat unsafe.  My home is fine, as we now have a small aluminum baseball bat near the only door if neighbor becomes a threat in a drunken rage.

I would like to carry something in the cab of my truck if I ever feel the need to defend myself. I do not want to go clobbering people, and I would be more than happy if whatever I had for protection collected cobwebs. I have a regular cab(two door)so my options are limited.

I am not buying a .45 from the street, nor am I going to carry a KaBar like I am Rambo.
Baseball bats, pipes, police batons, crowbars, katanas, power drills, pipes, and any conventional weapon(or obvious makeshift weapon) is out of the question, as I am only 17 and do not want to get crap from police for carrying weapons for "carrying weapons in a vehicle" or whatever.

So, I need suggestions for items to carry in a truck that wont get me charged with anything. The only thing that I could think of is a big Maglight, but the biggest maglight is 6 cells, which is about 17''. A litttle too hevy for the length, imo. Maglight did make 7 cell flashlights, but they are discontinued.

Keep this civil, and forum appropriate, people.

Run? If he is in a drunken rage, fleeing on foot or by car while calling the police shouldnt exactly be difficult. Also depending on the state you might need more than "he came right at me!" for self defense, mass for example, the lovely state were someone can burn down your home while you watch and you legaly can only call the police..........

6 D-cell mag-lights are not weapons and I only keep one next to the emergency brake handle because I am afraid of the dark. That being said, they work and are better than nothing. Buy heavy alkalines and not the cheap and light weight carbon crap.

Sword cane, IMO.

But for srs, I've got a "fire bat" in my van. I don't know why I put it in there, but I figure I might as well keep it. It's a very sturdy oak baseball bat-like club, but smaller. It's designed to beat out fires and thump the tires on big rigs. Could also pop a skull if need be.

i carry a 4D mag light (before i saw the 6D ) i dont have int lights in my vehicle and in case of emergency. i make sure to keep it tight along the left side of my seat.

check laws. carrying some knives/swards is illegal and most concealed weapons (like cane swards) are illegal. same thing with mace, some states require a permit.

i carry several knives for work so i figure i can use one of them, or my flashlight. the 1st week in feb im going to start carrying a .45acp.

if it is a very real threat call the police. i have before. it will also help you later on incase anything happens.

consider a firearm... a bat or mace is fine against an unarmed person (if you know how to use it) but against someone who is armed you want an upper hand (or if they are armed with a firearm at least even)

I would suggest a medium to large catapult...

Being serious I guess a crow bar in the trunk is you're best bet... with a maglite next to you're door...

I will be buying either a 40. or 45. compact within the month.

The whole cane-sword thing is kind of an inside joke. I wasn't being serious. And the "mace" we're referring to is pepper spray, not the thwappy kind (which would be so cool!). As for the firearm thing, I'd never use one on a person who has a gun on me. That's just another excuse for them to shoot you. Running basic scenarios in my head, if someone has a gun on you, there's almost no way an average person with a CCL can draw and discharge a pistol before the attacker fires. The only chance one may have is if they have a revolver, they can fire from within a pocket, but that doesn't ensure a kill shot or even a hit. The situations where one can successfully use a firearm are actually kind of rare...

This is irrelevant. Pretend I have a gun on you, ready to fire. Do you really think you can draw your weapon, aim it decently enough to get a hit and fire it (even chambered) before I pull the trigger on you?

Assuming  the attacker has the gun drawn and aimed, and the defender carries a double-action pistol in a quick-release holster with a round in the chamber, let's look at it like this:

Defender:
- React
- Reach for gun
- Draw gun
- Aim gun (sloppily)
- Pull trigger (heavy and long, since double-action)

Attacker:
- React
- Pull trigger (short and crisp, since the hammer is most likely cocked)

This is best-case scenario for a person who has a gun drawn on them. There's no way you can use your firearm before you yourself are shot.

If you are in your truck, why not just drive away.

Then call the police.

Do they rent?  If so a call to the landlord letting them know the what's going on and that you will be contacting the police, usually gets some action.  If your neigbhours actually threaten you, take it to the police.  I had problems with my neighbours at one point, I talked to them - nicely - a couple of times, and then I told them next I had a problem, I'd phone the cops.  I did, more than once, for noise violations and parking behind my vehicle and they got evicted (I also talked to their landlord).  To their credit they at least never tried to pick a fight, and most people know that uttering threats gets attention from the police.   These are things I would do before it escalates and you are faced with an actual fight or flight situation.

I do carry something in my truck, it's actually a spark plug extension made from high grade PTFE plastic, around 20" long, has an aluminium rod thru the length of it and weighs about 4 lbs, I've never used it but you never know.

Police involvement is the proper thing to do.  The more incident reports you or your family file, the better it is for you in case you have to defend yourself.  An order of protection would be great if you can get one from the courts.  As for immediate protection, your truck for example, a ball pean hammer, tire iron, or maglight is more than enough provided your attacker isn't armed.  If you are outside of your truck, go for the nearest car with an antenna.  Snap it off and use that.  It stings like a whip and leaves painful gashes.  I have a 2 inch faded scar on my ribs/back from one I recieved in a "group altercation" from a guy armed with one. Even a drunk hit with one will think twice about coming at you a second time.

I was just saying it wouldnt matter if you had a revolver or not.  but if you are in that situation, wait until the other dude looks away for a sec or something.  its worked before.

I'm a fan of the three D-cell flashlights.
- They are not illegal to have in a vehicle
- They are not so long/heavy as to be awkward
- Their is a good reason to carry them at night
- They are, in my experience, quite effective at discouraging unwanted behavior

then you have some decisions to make:
1)die, gun in holster
2)die, gun in hand
3)live, gun in holster
4)live, gun in hand
depends on the situation, youd have to make that decision yourself.

Another recommendation for Maglite.

I used to have a 6D with side-handle clamped inside my old blue van. But to be honest, while it certainly had the heft to knock someone out cold... the weight was probably a hinderance in regards to repeated swings. That said, for me, I would choose the opposite approach of Johnny... trade up the heavier alkalines for the cheapo Dollar Store Ds. Doing so made it much easier to swing around.

I have a 6C at home I really like.

But... if you're going to be keeping this accessible, say, under the seat... I would go with a 4 cell tops. 3-cell would be good. You want it compact enough to where you can swing it while still inside/exiting the vehicle.

I'd go with both Maglite and PepperSpray. Buy two canisters of spray. Try one in an open unoccupied area just so you get a feel of the range and spray pattern.

These two options should pass the stink test for any LEO that happens to pull you over and stop your car. These two options are also able to be procured Immediately, rather than having to wait to procure something else.

Its more than likely going to be a maglight, probably a 6D for length. I am going to check out walmart to see what they have for flashlights.

Second runner up, sparkplug tool like johnny said. More than likely though I would use a breaker bar(as its the closest thing I own).

Third runner up- DTs fire bat.

FIRE IT UP.

But as for my revolver scenario, it increases the chance of defensive action. Here's the hypothetical running through my mind. Mugger comes up to you, gun in hand, demanding money. You reach into a pocket (if I was wearing a jacket, It'd be on the inside pocket) and you pull the trigger instead of protrude a wallet. This is still a longshot, but much better than trying to draw on a guy pointing a gun at you. Also, the situation still needs to be fairly on the defender's side. The mugger has to be unintelligent enough to allow the person he's holding up to reach in the pocket himself. A woman has even more of an advantage, as she can fire from the purse.

As to why I used a revolver in my scenario, much less moving parts, and it's always in the ready. The slide in an automatic can jam up in the pocket or purse, and it requires more room.

in your pocket you also have more chance of something coming between the hammer and blocking it.  not to mention the idiocy of carrying a gun in your pocket.

I'm not sure I'd want a tazer going off in my pocket either.

Edited Note:  On a more serious note,  a gun is not just going to "go off" in someone's pocket; the possibility of shooting oneself is very dependent upon the type of gun and the configuration it is carried in.

no, it isnt.  But with an unprotected trigger it is much more likely to be accidentally pulled.  its just not a good chance to take.

Everyone's talking about Maglites, but what about a smaller, much brighter flashlight?

I've got a Surefire that I use for work, and if you get shone in the eyes with that thing, especially at night, you're gonna be dazzled for a second or two. The light is still solid enough that a swing of the arm will put a good dent in someone's head with it. Flash them in the eyes, kick them in the junk or stomach, smack them in the head with the light, disengage and get the hell out of dodge.

A bright light can buy you the second or two you need. Dazzled by the light, they won't see a good solid kick coming.

Brihard is right. There's nothing more self defense-esque than bright lights and swift kicks to the groin.

A pocket full of fish tank gravel was a tip I saw somewhere. Sounds stupid, but they explained it hurts like hell to have that flung in your face. They mentioned it as a way to give you time to draw a real weapon since people usually will try to shield their face when hit like that. It might be cheaper to throw Canadian coins though.

How long is that blade?

I may be in need of a folder with a blade less than 2.5", but all the little blades I have are attached to little handles, which is really annoying.  Full-size grip with short folding blade - hard to come by.

Best idea is a Maglite. My dad is a reserve police officer and has always used a maglite instead of the plastic crap lightsticks. He directs traffic a lot and maglites can do quite a bit of damage to a car that gets to close. They are good for protection too. Baseball bat would work too. I have one I'm my truck, I'm just to lazy to take it out. I doubt you could get in trouble with it

But with an unprotected trigger it is much more likely to be accidentally pulled.  its just not a good chance to take.
meh, i've shot a .38 special S&W hammerless, and it's double action because of the design. the trigger pull is VERY long for a handgun... although i've never tried, i'd bet it's very hard if not impossible to get the gun to discharge if its in your pocket. most pants like jeans wouldn't stretch enough.

Stupid things can happen with pistols no matter where you carry them.  True story from hiking in Alaska years ago:

Three of us, each with a holstered pistol broke through some thick brush and came face-to-face with a very large, very pissed-off bear.  (We were probably within 20 yard of it*.)  Everyone goes for their pistol.  One guy fumbles the draw and drops it on the ground. The second pulls the trigger in the holster and gets a powder burn on his leg through his jeans and blows a .44 magnum hole in the ground next to his foot.  (no, I don't know how he didn't put a hole in the side of his leg.)  I cleared leather and killed a tree branch just behind and to the left of the bear** which apparently decided at this point that it could only get stupider by eating us so it turned and ran off as I was aiming my next shot.

*When you're scared poopless, 20 yards is "face-to-face."
**In my defense, at this time I was not yet a very experienced pistol shooter.

Ouch! I had a guy drop his pistol during a match and the moment it hit the ground it went off.  Guess what pistol?
Glock.

We were underarmed.  The .44 was the heaviest of the pistols we had with us.  I had a .357 and the other guy had a small automatic.

(My plan was to outrun the other two if we got in deep doodoo.)

Heck, I wasn't even armed for the closest bear encounter I had up there.

A friend of mine had a second job at the club on base.  I was BSing with him at work one night (it was still light out--we were getting no real night at the time) and he asked for help with the garbage.  The club had this one huge plastic garbage bin that it took at least two people to move.  I helped him carry it out to the dumpster; cussing all the way as three people would have been even better, and with much effort we managed to get it on the edge of the dumpster and tip it up to dump it.  (This part was definitely a three-person job; one to hold each side and one to tip up the bottom.)  We dumped it right on top of a bear that was in the dumpster.  The bear was not happy.  It put its paws on the edge of the dumpster, stuck its head and shoulders out and gave us a big unfriendly growl.  (It was close enough that I got sprayed by the growl-ewww bear spit.)  Fortunately, this was not that big a bear and we thought as one at that moment.  Without a word we shoved the bin over its head and while it was falling over backwards in the dumpster we hauled ass inside.

I had a few similar run-ins in Snowshoe, mind you they were black bears and not Grizzlies or Kodiaks.

A .44Mag will do the job if you put a few shots in on a Grizzly, but the big reason to carry Casull or higher is that bears aren't the only thing you run into up in Alaksa that can kill you. Moose are freakin' mean!

You can use either. You're just thinking of the sock-bath from Southpark though.
