So, about 6 months ago, a good friend of mine whos an active duty veteran currently with the national guard came over. Since hes the only member of the local guard whos actually been to iraq, they had him working on training things. He tells me his commanding officer told him to whip up a couple fake IEDs to be used in training excercises, showing the new guys what to keep an eye out for.

So since Im a total junk packrat, I offered him to take whatever he needed that I had laying around the garage. He rigs up an empty small helium tank with an old dead cell phone, and a pop can filled with dirt and an antenna sticking out of it. He tosses them in his car and leaves, and I never thought anything of it again.

Until this happened: http://www.wane.com/dpp/news/Police_destroy_suspicious_devices - http://www.wane.com/dpp/news/Police_destroy_suspicious_devices

Yes, that is my friends old apartment. Turns out the idiot never took the fake IEDs to the guard armory, he just left them laying around his apartment. And then when he moved out, he forgot about them and left them behind...

Last I saw him was a week or so ago, when he got email telling him he was being deployed again and to start with the whole pre-deployment process. I have no idea when he was scheduled to leave, or if he is over there already, because his cell phone is disconnected, and none of our mutual friends have seen him.

Now Im a bit paranoid because I provided the random junk and crap that he used to make these things. So I wonder, would the cops be able to trace where the parts came from, or would they even care? If they did, would I be in any sort of trouble for this? As far as I knew, I was just helping a friend with an assignment from his commanding officer, but who the hell knows nowdays...

I don't see how you could get in trouble if you explained everything. Also, I don't see them tracing it back to you. That would be expensive. Pretty funny though.

You have a good alibi, and proof of other things you've worked on that aren't (completely) terrorist related. I think you'd be ok if they found you, as long as your police are somewhat competent and trustworthy

Besides, they are closing Gitmo, so the worst that could happen is a cell-mate named Bubba who thinks you have a purdy mouth.

I don't think you should be worried.  You should probably go to the police with your story.

Haha, thats great.

I dont think anything will happen unless someone is trying to make themselves look good. Most thatll happen would probably be a call asking about the cell phone.

I would laugh, someone comes to your house and asks why your fingerprints are all over the stuff its made of.

Lmao.

I love how they have to instill fear into the people, anyway.

"Police believe that had the first device been real and detonated, it would have blown out the windows and doors of that particular apartment."  OMG!

Yeah, I'd go to the authorities if I were you on this one. They probably can't trace anything back to you, but at the very least, get the word out that these things weren't done up by someone looking to cause any trouble.

if they found your prints and they have your prints on file they could find it or track the cell to the last known user. also im sure higher powers are going to be looking into this(ATF or FBI).

i would contact the friend and get him to contact his CO and get something in writing about how he was asked to do this. once he has that in hand i would talk to a lawyer.

I wonder why they used a 1% resistor in a device that looks like it was made for a 4th grade science fair.

Enos may find Amanda Hugnkiss, especially after the police see the video of the computer exploding.

I expect them to find him through the cell phone so contacting them ASAP would probably be a good idea.

It said the last tenant was evicted...

add on the fact that they found what appeared to be bombs in the apartment.

Can't end well if you don't go forward.

They blew the phone up..... I doubt they took prints off a suspicious device that they thought was a bomb.

I'd say just call the cops to let give them a statement to let them know what is what to save some tax dollars.

But yes, that story is amazing.

That's a phone rigged up as a remote trigger for an IED. The wires for the speakers would be rigged into an electric detonator, which in turn is connected to the main charge. Perp places IED, waits for a convoy to roll by, calls the cellphone, phone 'rings', and the world's most obnoxious ringtone kills a few soldiers.

Fortuantely, in that case, they goofed some part of it.

Well, the drama is over.

Tonight my MIA friend showed up, he was out on pre-deployment training, and when he heard about this mess he voluntarily contacted the bomb squad. Turns out the head of the bomb squad is ex-military and he actually told my friend "I suspected this was something military, they just looked too much like the devices I saw overseas". So no charges are filed, hes not even getting fined. The Guard explained the whole thing, and its over and done with.

Quote from the bomb squad guy "At least the guys had fun"
