Subject: Help me find a knife
Date Posted: 27 January 2009 at 12:38pm
So, I am looking for a knife.

I currently carry http://sogknives.com/store/TFSA-98.html - this knife .  Absolutely love it.  Really love the spring assist.

However, I am seeking a knife that meets some specifics specs:

- folder

- blade less than 2.5" (preferably well below, so there won't be a discussion)

- full-size handle, or at least largish and comfortable (all my shorty knives have uncomfortable shorty handles, which makes them useless)

- easy one-handed opening (spring assist preferred)

- must fit deep in picket with minimum visible exposure

Does such a knife exist?  Any suggestions/recommendations?

These guys make some nice, affordable blades. I have a bigger folder  from them that I keep in my turnout gear.

soo hard to find the right knife under 3".   everyday at work i was wishing i had a small knife i wouldnt notice in my pocket, to cut this and that.  I'm not into serrated edges.  I scooped up a 3" folding gerber knife with soft rubber handle. 10 bucks. its decent i like it. but i could never find the one i wanted under 3".  I wish i could find a picture. 3" inch folding fine edge. and that thumb assist for 1-hand opening. happy hunting

I love kershaw blades. I owned one of them for quite some time until I snapped the tip off of a blade while trying to use it as a screwdriver. Angry

I really like Kershaw's shorty blades. Gerber has few nice ones available as well. I currently carry a CRKT and it's holding up nicely for me.

I just went to Gerber's site and couldn't find a CRKT - or any other 1" folders, for that matter.

See, this is where you need to be crafty. Tell the woman that she has a choice. You can either teach him how to use a pocket knife properly, or how to shoot.

Don't just leave it at that though. Go into the costs and benefits. Once she finds out how expensive and time consuming it is to teach your little-one to shoot, she'll think the pocket-knife is a great idea. It's all about misdirection!

Yeah, I'm not sure that posing shooting as the alternative is the correct approach.  I am not trying to arm the kid - to me a knife is primarily a tool.  I am pushing the pocket knife as a playtime accessory for boys.  Hard to whittle without a knife.

Great knife.  That's what I carried before I switched to the SOG Flash.  The main downside of the SWAT was that when using the pocket clip, a good chunk of handle sticks up out of the pocket, making it not very circumspect to carry.  The pocket clip on the Flash is all the way at the top, so no part of the handle is visible.

That is true it's like having a CCW on you're hip, you have atleast half a inch of the knife sticking out you're pocket... I once got pulled over "First time actually" and I forgot I had it on me, by the time the cop asked me to get out I realized it, before I could say anything the officer told me to put my hands behind my back, he then quickly pulled the knife out my pocket, I said "Yea I was going to tell you about that" he said "yea"...

Thankfully he put my knife which my brother gave me back in my car... but boy was my heart pumping the second I felt that knife in my pocket...
I feel it should be one of the first things you tell the officer is you have a pocket knife / fire arm... and I slipped up... at least it was just a warning... thank god...

P.s The cop asked were we were going, I told him to get a pizza.. he replied "What kinda pie you getting?" Pie? honestly who calls it a pie these days... sorry for rambling on...

Thats kosher, it can be in there i think. At least i hope so, i've done it multiple times. Check http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm - TSA Regulations, were okay.

The knives i use right now are:

http://www.newmoonmall.com/Gerber-Blades-AR-350-Series-Fine-Black-Stainless-Steel-Blade-05870_p_14236.html - Gerber AR350

http://www.backcountryoutlet.com/outlet/CKT0026/CRKT-Rollock-2-Knife.html - CRKT Rollock

Knives on order are:

http://www.americanesuperstore.com/gs50084.html - Kershaw Shallot
http://www.ambientweather.com/rcben960red.html - Benchmade 960

I've wanted a benchmade for so long i finally sucked it up and ordered one.

My dad went the boy-scout route with me. I was carrying a USMC Ka-Bar on camping trips by the time I was 10. His argument to my mom was that if I got my tote-n-chit from the BSA (actually, tiger cubs at the time) I knew enough to use knives for their intended purpose and correctly.

Mind you, I went shooting for the first time when I was 5, so my parents were pretty damned cool in the first place.

edit sorry didnt know you already owned one but its still worth the post for others to look at :)

personally i love my flash 2 i have it in the half serrated blade version though
very durable the only thing i had to do was take out all the screws and lock tight them but it holds a beautiful edge and i have no problem shaving with it too :) fits nicely in your pocket  the only thing is it does have a 3 1/2 inch blade  the handle is very confortable and natural feeling  with great grip  its also spring assist  with a lock to prevent it from opening in your pocket

I'd avoid Frost Cutlery, but I assume that's just assumed here. They're worse than the crappy gas-station M-Tecs or whatever.

And I'm fortunate. Legal blade length in Texas is 5.5", so the world is open to me. :)

I've got a few kukris in my box o'goodies...  Fun knives.

As for Wisconsin law, it is very vague.  You cannot carry a "dangerous weapon" concealed.  No state level restriction on open carry.  What is a "dangerous weapon?"  Good question, and I don't know the answer.  Judgement call.  Totality of situation.  My Flash II is probably a dangerous weapon, and I am probably violating state law every day.  Some cops tell me anything under 3" is ok, but that may be because some munis (like Milwaukee County) have local ordinances specifically prohibiting blades longer than 3".

My 2.5" limit is for other reasons, but it probably wouldn't hurt me to find a new carry knife locally as well.  Stupid laws.  I wish they would just get the CCW bill passed already.

*sigh*

I got you beat by at least a few months then. My mom and dad decided me how to handle and shoot a pistol when I was 4 and some months old.

My dad provided the stability for the weapon by holding it for the most part, but I aimed and pulled the trigger Big smile

ha that reminds me of when i was about that age and INSISTED on my dad letting me shoot his 12ga.  He supported it vertically, but let me take the full force of the recoil.  Needless to say i dint insist on shooting that particular shotgun for quite some time afterward.

No triangular ones, sorry. I've got my shorty and a nice m203 one with the tube hand grip. I never knew there was a shortage of the triangular ones. I thought the market would be bloated with those since eveyone seems to want the tactical rails.

Strange. I had a frost given to me over a year ago, and I've never had a problem with it. Research shows them to be cheaper than some of the others, but mine is yet to chip, break or fail me yet, and it's seen some pretty HD usage- like I said, I keep it in one of the pockets on my turnout coat.

Maybe if its general consensus that frost sucks, I'll have to start looking elsewhere as well.

Once you get used to having a knife, you start using it.  I use mine constantly.  Open boxes, sharpen pencils, cut off the seal on milk cartons...  Rarely a day goes by that the pocketknife doesn't get used several times.

I am always frustrated when I don't have a knife, because then it seems like I really need it.

People obviously manage without knives, but it is an incredibly versatile tool to have handy.

I never carry a knife, but I tend to need one to cut something like every day.
