So how I'm going to do this, is post all my england pictures, then holland, and so on through my trip. This way it's not all one post and it's easier for me to manage. Also unfortunately these are just the pics I put on facebook, so as you can imagine, tons are missing from the 4300 I took. Maybe I'll put up different ones later

So heres:
England

We just went to London for Englands side of things, so here you go:

In Victoria Station (I think it was Victoria)

Outside

Nelson Mandella attacking Big Ben

Palace view from when I got on the london eye

London Eye

Picadilly Circus

Trafalgar Square

Buckingham Palace

lol marching

Dinner in London

Tower Bridge

St Pauls (huge place)

Gumball sticker in rural london

That crazy building

Hollands post time

Leaving England by ferry and headed to Amsterdam

Me trying to sleep on the ferry

Where we slept on the ferry

Much happier on the train from the port to Amsterdam

Standing in front of the station

Canals

At our first hostel, making my bed

Sort of the rest of the room

Some guys museum

It was pouring one day, so this is a boat filling up with water outside our hostel

Red Light District

The Bulldog

Beside the Doors

They like bikes

The front of the hostel at night

We went here in the day

But...

Anyways, then we went to Haarlem

Accordioning

There was a museum/ gallery up this way, but it was closed (We had good luck with that)

Graffiti (lots of those pics)

This is inside a church. Each floor stone is a grave essentially...

The ceiling

The beach we found in Haarlem. Pretty windy.

Next, on to Den Haag

Our hostel had a deck onto a canal

Luxury. There was a weird guy in this room that kept asking us about hockey

Ahoy

They like their canals

Library in Den Haag

Then we went to the Escher museum...which was having a royal hats show

A particularly badass self portrait of Escher

They had stylized chandaliers too

Familiar?

Old lady feeding some ducks

All over downtown there are short pillars with art/ statues on them

I wanted chocolate milk, so I bought this. Then I found out that Vla isn't milk...its pudding

On a beach in Den Haag

Water

Dur hurr

These seagulls were so loud and annoying. Theres a video on my youtube now

And now on to Rotterdam

Look at me, Im in Rotterdam

THIS was our hostel...

It was the worst place ever

Cube house forest

Checking them out

Inside

Another

Their first skyscraper

This is the sonneveld house. One of the coolest houses I've ever seen. It's super old, but was made to be ultra-modern, and still feels like it is today.

Rotterdam is big on weird art. This is on the roof of a building (theres a bunch of them on various buildings)

As I said....

Rotterdam war memorial

Rotterdam has a huge park in the center, essentially the lungs of the city

In that park is the EuroMast. You can massively overpay to go up it if you want

The greatest thing ever. The pancake boat. You go around the Rotterdam harbour and eat all you can eat pancakes of various types with tons of topping varieties. TONS of screaming children though, we were the only people over 15 that werent there with children of our own.

I got bacon pancakes

Next post will be Germany!

The more I think about it now, the more I like it. At first it was kind of underwhelming, since everyone always goes on and on about OMG ITS LONDON! and it's essentially like any other huge city, but I certainly did like the city. Cool landmarks and such and lots of history. But yeah, I'd love to go back, the city was nice, just very very pricey

Now for the Germany post.

First up, Berlin

Arriving in Berlin

This is Berlin's death star tv tower. Good landmark to find your way around, and we were right near it :D

lawl

Old Cathedral. All the black parts you see is fire/ smoke damage from the war

A War Memorial

Checkpoint Charlie.

Where the Berlin wall used to stand

will do

In front of a section of Berlin Wall

Where Hitlers bunker was, now a parking lot

Walking through the Jewish War Memorial

So then we decided to go to a concentration camp...but we dont understand german and missed the "end of the line" announcement. We got stuck at the end for 10-15 minutes before we went back to the last station.

At the Sachenhausen (sp) concentration camp. Tower A

Spacious

We walked through this...then got stuck outside near a mass grave site. I pushed the security button and nothing happened. Then about 5 minutes later the door on the right just swung open....weird

A Memorial

Where some ovens were. Not the kitchen.

Another memorial in the center of the camp

These stones are all numbered to mark where the barracks were, and which number they were.

The death strip. Touch the gravel and be shot. Then theres barbed wire and more barbed wire (at least partially electrified), then patrols on the other side.

Next up, Dusseldorf!

They had weird lit up benches in a park thing near our hostel

Our hostel

Beer in vending machines? Yes please

The beaudoir

Germany likes towers

Then we hit the promenade for a milkshake and some reading

And me taking a picture in a church, that makes it look like I'm praying

Next up, Cologne (or Koln)

HUGE cathedral called The Dom

Pictures can't convey how HUGE these things are.

Priesty people. Oddly, speaking english (at least some)

Inside the Dom

Note the number of steps. No lift.

Way up there

This is the hostel we were at in Cologne. See the buildings out the window? Those are on the other side of the train tracks. So we are RIGHT beside the station. You could even hear the intercom announcements, as well as the trains.

Delicious beer hall schnitzel

Posted By: choopie911
Date Posted: 10 February 2009 at 5:41pm

chocolate museum

They dipped wafers in this and we ate them. Awesome

Then we had a picnic by the river

Crackers and cheese. Small coke can

Also, they have a sculpture park. Weird place

Very Nightmare Before Christmas

Watermelon Chocolate

This is at a music bar called Electra.

Goodbye goatee

Teabagging

Another idea of how huge those spires were

Oktoberfest pictures are next

Posted By: JohnnyCanuck
Date Posted: 10 February 2009 at 6:49pm
great pictures, the Dom is incredible.

Imagine there’s a picture of your favourite thing here.

So after Cologne, we went to Frankfurt

Me looking out our hostel window

To take this picture. You can see the train station there

Cool section of town we found

Awesome bratwurst and fries and such place we ate at

NOW I'll get working on Oktoberfest pics

Posted By: choopie911
Date Posted: 10 February 2009 at 7:57pm

Our hostel in Munich

Inside

So you get there on the metro, walk up the stairs, and enter this

So we got some food, a meter of bratwurst on a baguette

Do work

So we hit the Haufbrau House tent. Biggest one at Oktoberfest

It was packed, but we went outside and got some beers

Saw some wenches

Yay beer

And huge pretzels

And rode this

And these

Posted By: choopie911
Date Posted: 10 February 2009 at 7:57pm

Then we went to check out downtown Munich, and I spotted this

Nice church. Super intracate inside of course

Palace. Kind of interesting having an oldschool center, and glass wings

Memorial

Horsecops

We were there on a national holiday, so NO-ONE was working. Thus, everyone was going to, or at Oktoberfest. It was POURING rain this day, but it was packed, as you can see by the subway

We did find the famous Hofbrauhaus downtown though

But good luck getting inside

Then we hopped on a train overnight to Venice. This is during the night as we went through Austria. It was snowing

Next stop, Venice

what would you say was the best beer at oktober fest?

Posted By: choopie911
Date Posted: 10 February 2009 at 8:19pm
It was all really good, but Hofbrau was great. But yeah if you like lagers then it's all gravy.
Actually, the only place I wasn't a big fan of the beer was london, as they're more into darker, more bitter beers (London Pride and such) and nearly everywhere else is into lagers and whatnot, so pretty much everywhere had decent beer available. I saw becks gold all over the place, and I couldnt taste a difference from it to normal becks.

i am a fan of lagers, any chance hofbrau is imported anywhere in north america that you know of?

if that is in fact the beer, then i am very glad my state is on the list of ones that they will ship it to...only problem with the site (for me) you have to be 21 to order and sign for it...

I'll be in Perth on 8/9, Glasgow 8/15, and Oban 8/27.  Unless I can work it out, the last one will have to be cut as school starts on 8/24 for me (Just realized this).  That's already 3 weeks, I would have to travel around during the week, which I don't really care to do.

Anyways
So next up is Venice
Got in around 6am and had to kill time at the station till things actually opened and we could find where we were staying.

In front of the station

Where we stayed. We had our own little trailer thing, which was actually quite nice.

Downtown

Fresh fruit in a market. So tasty

Venitian masquerade masks

Police boat

On the grand canal

And now in St. Marco's square (where this years flooding pictures were from)

Headed back down the canal at sunset.

On the train out of Venice

Next we went to Naples which is near Pompeii so we'll be going there too. Woo hoo.

So, first dinner in Naples, the birthplace of pizza, was a huge awesome pizza. It was 4 euros ($6-ish)

THIS is where knockoffs come from. It was a market in front of our hostel every day. It sells nothing but knockoff shoes, clothes, cds/dvds, phones, watches, belts, etc. The streets were LINED with people with blankets out on the ground, covered in purses and belts and sunglasses for sale. Naples was a dodgy place, you get warned a lot to keep an eye on your stuff, as pickpocketing is a huge problem there.

So then we went to Pompeii.

Check out them ruins

This fellow was encased in ash and fire. Then they were able to make a cast of the hollow space his body left behind.

Complete with original bones

Checkin it out

Another person

Streets

You can still see how the walls were painted in a lot of places

Lion fights anyone?

Then we went to the Naples Archeological Museum

Yeah!

Model of Pompeii

Guy taking some pictures?

Back downtown

A tiny sample of the purses

We went in this church, where a wedding was about to start (or had just finished)

Headed for the water

We went in a lame castle on the water and checked it ou

It was pretty out at least

The castle

Kids playing soccer

Wild cat (saw several)

Headed to the top of another castle

That castle

Another awesome pizza dinner. Also about 5 euros.

I always forget the exchange rate - how much is $6CDN in real, non-monopoly, dollars?  I'm guessing that huge pizza wold have cost a few cents in real, 'Merican dollars?

Seriously though, some of those pictures were amazing.  If you put a huge "Keith Saylor" watermarks on them, you probably could sell them as postcards for lots of money.

At 4 euros that first naples pizza would have run you $5 USD. And I have thought about that. A lot of our idle whatever shots are better than most of the post cards I've seen. As I mentioned before, I took 4300 pictures, theres bound to be some good ones

So now heres Rome

Lots of painters and crap in this square

The Pantheon

Magical Trevi Fountain

All over Rome they have water spouts all over the place. There's a hole in the top of them, so you can drink from them like a water fountain if you cover the bottom.

Ruins

Then we went inside. They have a section of floor rebuilt as a demo too.

Next we went on a Vatican tour

More stuff in there than you could EVER look at

This fellow used to be missing his upper arm

This is made of purple marble. Purple marble is worth $20,000 USD per cubic inch.

More art

Being jesus in St. Peters Basilica

Pictures can't actually show the size of this place. Massive

Out front

That night we walked to a free MTV Italia concert that was going on nearby. Got to see John Legend and The Cure for free

We got even closer than this too

Anywho, next up is florence

Posted By: choopie911
Date Posted: 19 February 2009 at 11:15pm
Ahhh, arriving in Florence

Where The David is. Thankfully a super short line when we were there.

Mediocre picture of a huge awesome church deal

Which of course we climbed

Nice view

We were walking around one evening and heard drum music. These folks were marching around in the streets, not sure why.

At one of our favourite pubs of the whole trip, Joshua Tree Pub in Florence. Got PACKED in there since they had great happy hours too

So it's just a short hop skip and jump over to Pisa from Florence, and we heard it wasn't worth staying the night there, so we headed over there next.

Lots of people trying to sell cheap crap to you there too.

It's a good time taking pictures of people posing with the tower, but from the wrong angle

And this dude was on rollerskates, and had money in his watering can.

So that ends Italy. Next we went to Southern France before dipping down into Spain, then back up to Paris as our last stop, so southern france is next.

Did you have this all planed out before you went over there...Where you were going to stay certain nights, what you were going to see?

anyone else for pulling an oceans 14 on that purple marble table?

Yeah, well seeing as how 14 people are probably needed to move it a decent pace I don't think it's possible.

I'm down if we can have a cop on the inside.

I'd be down for an Ocean's 14, although I fail at heavy lifting. I'll create a distraction though. Maybe I'll dress up in a Satan costume. That would get some looks. Or stabs.

We had some of it planned, then planned the rest as we went. We knew where we were starting and finishing, and which countries we wanted to try to get to. We tried to have probably.....2 cities ahead of us booked. Overall it wasn't really an issue, but there were a few times we had to change plans because we were aiming for a certain city that there was just NO vacancy for some reason. We knew for the most part which majors we wanted to see (venice, florence, barcelona, etc) and picked others to go with them according to recommendations, what the city had to offer, location, etc.
And I chose Valencia in spain, which you'll see in a bit, as my sister had gone there when she was travelling with a friend and it looked awesome, so I decided I'd have to go check it out. I'm really glad I did, it was an awesome city, really nice pace/ things to do, and a topless beach.
