Erin bought herself a new car yesterday. She got the Mazda 3 Sport hatchback. She almost bought the Mazdaspeed 3 Touring hatchback, but thought the extra $20/mo wasn't worth the extra 100hp. Girls are silly like that I guess. Anyway, it's a nice car, especially for $16,995.00USD ($1,000,000.00CAN). It keeps her payment under $300/mo which is what she wanted and it's still pretty fun to drive. I'll post pics when she gets back from work.

Neons, cat-back exhaust, CAI, New Rims, Tints and a 15 inch sub woofer will have her styling while she rolls.

why waste money on a CAI?  it doesnt make it sound or look any faster.

So after she wins a race, she can pop the hood and said "Yeah, even my engine looks better than your car."

For us non-techy car people - what is a CAI and why do I want one?

cold air intake.  instead of taking in hot air with less oxygen by volume, it takes in cold air with more oxygen by volume which alows you to use more fuel per cycle which creates more power.  it does that by moving the intake location from under the hood to typically inside the wheel well or somewhere else away from the engine.  they are also usually insulated to keep the air cold.

But it sounds like you are saying that a CAI does add HP?

Me = confused about teh CAI.

it does add HP.  I was just saying that because all the things he listed were aesthetics that people commonly put on their car to make it look fast, ricers, if you will.  the CAI adds horsepower but is located under the hood so no one can see it.  His bit about the engine looking better is probably because CAIs are often chrome and colored, making the engine pretty.

She got the 2.3L They don't make the hatchback in the 2.0 configuration. Minimum trim-line you can get with the hatchback is the 2.3s Sport Edition which is essentially power everything, the 2.3l engine, 17" 5 spoke alloy wheels, a nice stereo, bucket seats, etc. etc.

It's a nice car but doesn't stack up to the Mazda 6s Hatchback that I have. Of course, mine's got a 3L V6 in it.

the 2.3l duratech is a good engine, same one thats in my focus.  nice cars those 3s are.

Actually, the 3 doesn't use the Duratech, it uses the MZR engine which is all Mazda made. The only Mazdas which use the Duratech engine are the 6s and the old (until 2004)MVP, which use the MZI edition (ford supplies the block and Mazda works their magic with it by adding VVT and a couple other non-standard additions). Erin's car uses 95% Japanese made parts and is assembled in Hiroshima Japan. It's a good engine, but I'm not sure yet as to how well it will hold up vs the Duratech. I know that my engine is at 75k miles and it is indestructible. The Duratech is indeed a great platform.

Rambs-
I was going for Sarcasm in my post. It was supposed to be a satire on the "ricer" image on any foreign car. As you can see, it failed pretty hard.
Eville dead on about Cold Air Intakes.

To Tallen-
Congrats on the new car. Those Mazda 3s are very nice, a friend has one and I really like it.

did not know that.  I just assumed that since the 6's used it the 3 would as well, then they have to go making it the same displacement...tricksy hobbitses.

i wouldn't say im overly concerned about the size of the engine, but i do need something i can haul stuff around it, and possibly toss on a tow ball to hook up to a trailor or something, so i need something that will have decent to good pickup and be able to take a beating

heck, i wouldn't even mind a mini-van.

think about it... take the seats out and you basically have a truck with a cab, with the seats in you can haul around at least 6 ladies to a hot tub on the beach.

Yeah but what ladies gona wanna roll in a MiniVan LoL.  If your gona go that rout you at least need a shaggin wagon from the 70's LOL.  I actually had a 1977 Dodge Tradsmann 200 myself good times and a fun big old beast. Mine had the 318V8 with shorty headers to twin glass packs, the exhaust heading out both sides in front of the rear tires.

All kidding aside congrats on the new car, have a buddie with a 2008.5 model very nice little cars.  If i were to go back to a car again a Mazda 3 would be on the short list ( comfy fun to drive and affordable and LOTS of room under the hood for goodies).

It is pretty hard to beat the practicality of minivans.  And they are full of cool gadgets too.

The only problem is the image thing.  I think that can probably be solved with decals and dubs.

I learned how to drive in a minivan and bought my parents old one from them when they were ready to buy something else. Practical? hell yeah. I could haul my tools around when I was working for a construction company and never have to worry about the weather. I even carried a dead deer inside of it once to the processor. We didn't feel like hoisting the frozen carcass to the roof, so we popped the hatch, threw it in the trunk and away we went.

LOL

The Mazda3 is nice. My brother has the sedan and it's pretty zippy. The hatchback is alright. Not my cup of tea, but the mazdaspeed3 makes up for the hatchback. I went to the mazda dealership to just look around. I finally found a MS3 and opened the door. While everyone was staring at me, i popped the hood so I could see the turbo. I really want an RX8 even though the MS3 is faster.
